The SAWYER FREE LIBRARY and WELLSPRING HOUSE are pleased to announce the launch of GLOUCESTER CONNECTION. This innovative multi-lingual website (gloucesterconnection.org) connects the greater community to Gloucester’s vast social services for education, health care, housing, and much more. The new free-to-use web platform is an easy-to-navigate centralized online directory and calendar that consolidates information from local organizations, services, and events for residents, visitors, and service providers, prioritizing accessibility by making it available in over 100 world languages.

Seaside Sustainability Announces Marine Shrink Wrap Recycling Initiative and Recycling Program

Drop Off Your Marine Shrink Wrap at Gloucester Dept. of Public Works, April 5-June 4

GLOUCESTER, MA-April 5th, 2021- Seaside Sustainability, a nonprofit based in Gloucester, MA with a mission to protect coastal waters through education and action, announces the launch of the Marine Shrink Wrap Recycling Initiative. The Marine Shrink Wrap Recycling Program will give boat owners in Gloucester and surrounding communities an in option for discarding marine shrink wrap. Instead of this material ending up in landfills, it will be recycled into new material for future use. This program is free and accessible to the public.

The Marine Shrink Wrap Recycling Program began on April 5th, 2021 and continues through June 4th, 2021. Boat owners can recycle shrink wrap at City of Gloucester Public Works, 28 Poplar Street, Gloucester, MA 01930. The facility will be open Monday to Thursday from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm and from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm on Fridays

This program is made possible through partnerships with Gloucester Harbormaster, Thomas Ciarametaro Jr. and Dynamic Waste Solutions Incorporated. Seaside Sustainability would like to thank Jeffrey and Stephanie at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Sea Grants for helping build the program. Seaside Sustainability is excited to work with WHOI in the future to expand the Marine Shrink Wrap Recycling Program on Cape Ann. Seaside Sustainability would also like to thank the Gloucester Department of Public Works for offering their facility as a home for the recycling container.

Eric Magers, Seaside Sustainability founder and executive director stated, “Seaside Sustainability is excited to make recycling marine shrink wrap easy, accessible, and free in our own town of Gloucester. Plastic waste, including marine shrink wraps, threatens our oceans.”

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, plastic debris is the leading cause of ocean pollution, accounting for 80% of ocean waste. Plastic waste is ingested by marine animals causing serious health consequences. Larger plastic debris entraps hundreds of thousands of marine animals every year. Plastic pollution has also been linked to ocean acidification. Studies have found that over 90% of the US seafood was imported from geographic regions with significant waste leakage and plastic pollution.

There is a simple, 3 step way to prepare Plastic Marine Shrink Wrap for recycling. 1. Ensure shrink wrap is clean and free of debris, wood, metal, garbage, and other

non-shrink wrap materials.

2. Fold shrink wrap into 4-5 foot widths and roll each piece into a tight bundle (like a sleeping bag).

3. Tie each bundle with a strip of shrink wrap… and that’s it! Now you are ready to recycle your shrink wrap. Just head over and place your bundle in the recycling bin located at 28 Poplar Street, Gloucester, MA 01930. The recycling bin will be marked by a sign with Seaside Sustainability’s logo.

Note: As you prepare your shrink wrap for recycling, it is crucial to keep the material clean and free of dirt and debris. Contaminants such as wood and metal will disrupt the recycling process.
