WINES
Clendenen Family Vineyards Pinot Gris 2020, Santa Maria, California
Varietal: Pinot Gris Alc.13.5%
Jim Clendenen had already collected countless honors and accolades for his Au Bon Climat wines when he created the Clendenen Family Vineyards label in 2000 as a vehicle to bring many of his most artisanal and experimental wines to market. All are produced in very small quantities; many of these wines are crafted from unique varietals grown primarily on his organically farmed Le Bon Climat and Rancho La Cuna Vineyards. The project has expanded to include special plantings at Bien Nacido Vineyard as well. While two of the jewels from this project are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, he also makes benchmark examples of Nebbiolo, Tocai Friulano, Viognier, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc, and a Syrah/Viognier blend. The Pinot Gris has stone fruit aromas and a rich, full body with juicy peach and nectarines notes and a spicy ginger note on the finish.
Pairs well with sushi, salads and fresh vegetables, shellfish. $24.99
Fontezoppa Asola 2017, Marche, Italy
Varietal: Maceratino Alc. 14%
Cantine Fontezoppa is a young company in central Italy on the Adriatic coast in the province of Macerata between Civitanova, Marche and very close to Civitanova Alta, an ancient 14th century village. The company, which takes its name from the ancient source of water that gushed out where the rows of vineyards now grow, was born thanks to the acquisition of the land in Civitanova Alta by the Luzi family in the late 1990s. Made from hand-picked Maceratino (or Ribona) grapes, this wine has an intense straw yellow color and strong and complex nose, with aromas of ripe fruit, citrus peel, peach, yellow flowers, united by a deep mineral note and a touch of vanilla. It is balanced and consistent on the palate, with a pleasantly long and fresh finish.
Pairs well with anchovies and other fish, white meat, truffles. $31.99
Salt Wine Company Pinot Noir 2021, Oregon
Varietal: Pinot Noir Alc.14.5%
Salt Wine Company sources fruit from the most prestigious vineyards on the West Coast and works with seasoned, artisanal winemakers. With partners and relationships built over 35 years, they make craft, small-lot, control-brand wines. Salt Wine Pinot Noir is full of aromas of sweet fruits โ plum, raspberry, and black cherry, with layers of spice and sweet tobacco. On the palate, a juicy burst of red berries and black currants is framed with a beautiful tannin structure. A lively and complex mid-palate with mineral and spice notes lingers on the finish.
Pairs well with roasted root vegetables, salmon, roasted chicken. $17.99
The Verga family has been producing wine since 1895. These days, the fifth generation of Vergas is making wine in Lombardy, and they have made improvements and innovations in production that have allowed them to expand distribution worldwide. The Natale Verga Intrรฉ Rosso is an Italian red blend that hails from three different terroirs, Corvina (Veneto), Sangiovese (Toscana), and Nero d’Avola (Sicilia). It opens with a bouquet of red currants, blackberries, black cherry and a sweet spice of licorice. The flavors travel to a round and warm palate, and while the tannins are present, they lead to a soft, lingering finish.
Pairs well with baked macaroni and cheese, chicken ravioli, or pizza. $ 14.99
Chateau Gigognan Clos du Rois 2016, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, France
Like many great estates, Chรขteau Gigognan has a long and storied past. The roots of the vineyards date back to the time of the Romans. The property’s modern history began when Anne and Jacques Callet purchased the Clos du Roi domaine and began restoring the chรขteau. All through the 1990s, the Callets worked to rebuild the property and create a better-equipped cellar. In 2009, the winery was certified organic. Jacques Callet passed away in July of 2016, and the property was purchased by Jean-Francois Henin in 2017. A new era began, and even greater restoration has taken place. A whole new production facility has been added, and winemaker Stรฉphane Derenoncourt is establishing the winery as one of the most exciting in the region. The Clos du Roi is primarily one large parcel with just a few tiny satellite parcels. The 2016 Clos du Rois wine pours a vivid ruby. Highly perfumed red fruit scents are complicated by suggestions of licorice and white pepper. Spicy and focused on the palate, the wine displays vibrant raspberry, bitter cherry, and floral flavors along with a smoky nuance. It finishes with resonating spiciness and chewy tannins.
Pairs well with mushrooms, barbecued beef, Osso Buco. $49.99
Bovio Barolo 2018, Piedmont, Italy
Varietal: Nebbiolo Alc.: 14.5%
Bovio is a small wine cellar located at the heart of the Barolo growing area. It is run by the third generation of wine producers in the Bovio family. Gianfranco Bovio began to look after his father Alessandroโs holdings in the 1970s, renovating the old cellars and dedicating himself to the making of wines grown on the estate vineyards that stretch out over 8.5 hectares.
Now daughter Alessandra and her husband, Marco Boschiazzo, continue the family tradition with winemaker Matteo Franchi. The company philosophy is embedded in tradition and terroir, from the scrupulous tending of the vineyards through the ageing of the wines in large oak casks. The Bovio 2018 Barolo (with fruit from La Morra and Castiglione Falletto) delivers a very bright and lifted bouquet with cassis, wild fruit and hints of dried apricot or apple skin. On the palate, ripe berries and spicy notes combine with the lightly firm tannins to give a plump, velvety texture. There is a chocolate-cherry, almost liqueur-like note on the finish.
Pairs well with blue cheese, roast duck, prime rib. $54.99
And donโt forget to check out whatโs new in our beer case. We just got in a new shipment of Maine Beer, with the IPAโs โLunchโ and โLittle Whale Boatโ leading the charge. We have a rich brown ale called โBrown Dogโ and the wonderfully dark but slightly hoppy Robust Porter, both from Smuttynose.

9-Foot Menorahs to Light Up Rockport and Ipswich, as Part of Worldโs Largest Hanukkah Observance Chabad of Cape Ann To Light Up a Few of the 15,000 Public Menorahs Worldwide, Symbolizing Universal Message of Religious Freedom
In what has become an annual tradition, Chabad will ignite a public 9-foot Hanukkah menorah erected in DownTown Rockport, followed by a community-wide celebration on Sunday, December 18th, the 1st night of the eight-day holiday. The menorah lighting ceremony will include music, Hanukkah themed refreshments, such as latkes and doughnuts and children’s activities.
New for this year, there will be a Public Menorah Lighting in DownTown Ipswich followed by a Chanukah party on Tuesday, December 20th at 5:30PM.
โThe menorah serves as a symbol of our ability to preserve and encourage the right and liberty of all its citizens to worship Gโd freely, openly, and with pride. This is true especially in America, a nation that was founded upon and vigorously protects the right of every person to practice his or her religion free from restraint and persecution,โ said Rabbi Raichik.
The Menorah lighting is part of the worldwide Hanukkah campaign, an initiative launched by the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, in 1973. The campaign highlights and encourages the central theme of the holiday โ publicizing the story of the Hanukkah miracle.
โThe message of Hanukkah is the message of light,โ added Rabbi Raichik. โThe nature of light is that it is always victorious over darkness. A small amount of light dispels a lot of darkness. Another act of goodness and kindness, another act of light, can make all the difference.โ
Today, the unprecedented public display of Hanukkah has become a staple of Jewish cultural and religious life, forever altering the American practice and awareness of the festival. Rockport’s menorah is one of more than 15,000 large public menorahs sponsored by Chabad in more than 100 countries around the world, including in front of landmarks such as the White House, the Eiffel Tower, and the Kremlin, helping children and adults of all walks of life discover and enjoy the holiday message
Throughout the North Shore, Chabad will be presenting dozens of Hanukkah events and celebrations
EVENT RECAP: What: Public Menorah Lighting Where: 1) Rockport Visitor Information Center (Mt. Pleasant and Broadway) 2) Bottom of Town Hill in Ipswich When: December 18th at 4:30PM and December 20th at 5:30PM
ABOUT HANUKKAH Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, begins this year on the evening of Sunday, December 18th and concludes the evening of Monday, December 26th. It recalls the victory of a militarily weak Jewish people who defeated the Syrian Greeks who had overrun ancient Israel and sought to impose restrictions on the Jewish way of life and prohibit religious freedom. They also desecrated and defiled the Temple and the oils prepared for the lighting of the menorah, which was part of the daily service. Upon recapturing the Temple only one jar of undefiled oil was found, enough to burn for only one day, but it lasted miraculously for eight. In commemoration, Jews celebrate Hanukkah for eight days by lighting an eight-branched candelabrum known as a menorah. Today, people of all faiths consider the holiday a symbol and message of the triumph of freedom over oppression, of spirit over matter, of light over darkness.
