How long have you lived in Gloucester?
5 years
What is your favorite season in Gloucester?
Summer, by a mile.
Do you have a secret outdoor spot in Gloucester where you go to “get away”?
I’m not sure it’s much of a secret, but it’s always quiet and beautiful on Coffins Beach.
Favorite pizza joint in Gloucester?
Bravo! Delicious. But if you haven’t had a pizzetta at Tonno (does that count?), you should.
Favorite sub shop in Gloucester?
I can’t believe it, but I can’t remember having a sub in Gloucester. Alicia’s wraps at Cove Cafe are a favorite.
Romantic dinner in Gloucester?
Tonno or Oak to Ember
Favorite bar in Gloucester?
Tonno! Paulo, Alex & Ryan are the best bartenders in town!
Favorite breakfast joint in Gloucester?
Sugar Mags. We go hapless at the shop when they take vacation.
Favorite local event in Gloucester?
Bluefin, of course!
In the summer, do you prefer the beach or to or to be on a boat?
Boat, but I’d have to try hard to have a bad day on the beach!
Who is your favorite local artist?
Way too many list – we are so lucky to have the dynamic art community we have now, and have had for over 100 years . But in anticipation of his installation this summer at the Cape Ann Museum, I’ll say one of my all time favorites, Edward Hopper.
Which is your favorite local beach?
Wingaersheek after 4pm. It’s like I raised my kids there. So many memories 🙂
Who has the best deck in Gloucester for dinner/drinks?
the Studio
Who has the best chowder in town?
Fish chowder at the Causeway is our go-to, but I just had a coconut curry fish chowder at Oak to Ember that I’d eat every day for eternity.
What are some favorite local online websites/Instagram accounts?
GMG! And @cutbridgecrazziness
Do you prefer haddock chowder or clam chowder?
Love both.
Name an unsung hero.
The folks at Cape Ann Special Olympics do an extraordinary job. CASO has a Special Olympics Global Ambassador and at least one Massachusetts Hall of Famer! They are doing inspiring things every day with wonderful (and very competitive!) individuals.
What is your favorite local band?
I don’t get to see as many as I’d like, so I’m going to work on that 🙂

William J. Foley, Jr., Best known as a very successful BHS soccer coach, William J. Foley Ir., a graduate of the Beverly High School class of 1969, he was also a hockey and baseball player for three years. He quickly moved the BHS soccer program from club level to interscholastic league play and to North Shore prominence.
His father, William Foley, Sr, who was Superintendent of schools, helped to develop the BHS boys hockey program in its early years with no inside rink (practiced on Kelleher’s pond) and with no youth hockey teams. So both coaches started from ‘scratch’.
The challenge for the soccer coach was to motivate and recruit students who wanted to play football or cross country in the fall season. Coach Foley was able to assemble a full varsity and IV team from the very first season. His teams were famous for not backing down or backing up. Each year the team’s skill level and the record improved, reaching the State finals against Lexington in 1979.
Bill’s greatest talent as a coach was as a motivator. He did not want BHS teams to be out- worked, to be prepared to represent Beverly High School as a group of student athletes. BHS may not have had the most skilled players, but no team in the NEC played harder. A notable player was Mayor Cahill.
Statistically, Bill had a record of 114-34-26, first or second in NEC each year, in the State Tournament for eight straight years, and two-time Salem News ‘Coach of the Year’
Beyond statistics, the most important trait of Coach Bill Foley was that he was remembered as the supreme motivator of his teams, often times with less talented players.

Staying true to its legacy, Topside Bistro will carry the same welcoming vibe that locals and visitors have grown accustomed to. Helming the kitchen is Salvatore (Sal) Valenti who most recently served as executive chef of Topside’s nearby sister restaurant, The Studio. Chef Sal’s all-day menu is comprised of thoughtfully priced and locally sourced elevated comfort fare brimming with seafood delights. On the beverage side, there is a collection of craft cocktails, 15 beer options, and even nonalcoholic wines.

Topside Bistro Anchors in Gloucester
Across from Harbor Cove, Topside Grille & Pub reemerges with refreshed look, new chef & management
Staying true to its legacy, Topside Bistro will carry the same welcoming vibe that locals and visitors have grown accustomed to. The interior has been refreshed, showcasing a collection of black-and-white photos of local scenes and characters, while original features like the hardwood floors have been lovingly restored. Undergoing minor cosmetic updates but with the same charm, this bilevel hangout accommodates 130 guests with a traditional dining room setting boasting spacious booths on the first level and on the second level, a completely refinished 18-person bar anchors the space surrounded by a mix of low-top and high-top tables as well as booth seating.
For starters, highlights from the menu include Clams Casino with local littlenecks stuffed with garlic-butter, bacon and breadcrumbs that are topped with Romanesco sauce; Broccoli Rabe Spring Rolls with whipped ricotta, toasted garlic chili flakes with sweet honey aioli; chef’s famous New England Clam Chowder; Bistro Brined Wings finished in a choice of buffalo, truffalo (a truffle-buffalo hybrid) or lemon-pepper sauce; and Chef Sal’s Raviolis with seasonal fillings enveloped in house made pasta dough. For entrees, standouts include a crispy skin, honey-soy glazed grilled Atlantic Salmon with orzo salad, sundried tomatoes, cucumbers and feta; Pork Osso Buco, a 12-hour braised 1.5lb bone-in pork shank with garlic mashed potatoes, sauteed broccolini and a pork demi-glace; an eight-ounce brisket and short rib Bistro Burger with butter lettuce, tomatoes and crispy onion strings topped with signature sauce on a toasted Virgilio’s brioche bun with fries; Vegetarian Stir Fry with sauteed local farm seasonal vegetables and soy sauce, fresh ginger, garlic white rice and peanut-curry sauce; and a creamy parmesan Scallop Risotto with spinach, confit heirloom tomatoes and local pan-seared U-10 scallops.
The beverage program is a collaboration of General Manager Teddy Spiegel and his wife, Hope (General Manager, The Studio). The collection of craft cocktails is unique, well-balanced, and creative with its base liquors all from local distillers. In addition to shaking up the best espresso martinis in town courtesy of their Lavazza espresso machine, other premier sips include the Bistro Manhattan with Larceny Small Batch bourbon, Carpano Antica, angostura bitters and Luxardo; Topside Sidecar with Pierre Ferrand 1840 cognac, Grand Mariner, fresh squeezed lemon, expressed lemon peel and a turbinado sugar rim; and Hope Feels French with Dita Von Teese Sweet Gwendoline French gin, simple syrup, fresh squeezed lemon, prosecco and a lemon peel. There are eight draught lines, where the resident Guinness is complemented by seven rotating local beers, including Maine Beer, Allagash, Rockport Brewing Company and more. There also will be alcohol-free wines available.
In homage to Gloucester’s famed arts community, Topside Bistro will feature local artist installations every two months with the option to purchase artwork. The first showcase will be works from Jason Mailo, a celebrated Gloucester-based photographer.
Topside Bistro is located at 50 Rogers Street in Gloucester. Beginning March 29, Topside Bistro will be open daily from 11am through midnight with the kitchen closing at 10pm. There also will be a bar bites menu available nightly from 10pm through 11:45pm. For more information, please call (978) 879-4222 or visit www.topsidebistro.com.
