William Boyd (Bill) Watterson (1932- )
A graduate of Kenyon College with a degree in political science, Watterson was a political cartoonist and ad designer before creating his award winning comic strip Calvin and Hobbes in 1985. Named for the Protestant reformer John Calvin and the philosopher Thomas Hobbes, the strip was hugely popular until 1995 when he stopped drawing it, maintaining he had said all he wanted to say. Famously reclusive, (hence no picture), he refused to allow the strip to be merchandised, and grants no interviews.
Bill Waterson had the Occupy Movement summed up decades ago in this strip-

This will remain one of life’s greatest mysteries to me.

You’ve seen palm trees, convertibles & movie starlets on Hollywood Boulevard, but have you ever seen a giant red lobster on a dress made from recycled sails? It isn’t Lady Gaga, but a collaboration between Frieda Grotjahn of Again & Again Recycled Sailbags and mother/daughter pair, Charlotte & Daphne Papp, of Annisquam. This November, Charlotte will travel to Anaheim, CA to represent Massachusetts in the National American Miss Pageant, where one of her outfits will have a style that is distinctly Gloucester.
For the casual wear portion of the competition, Charlotte will wear a one of a kind dress made from two recycled sails: a white spinnaker & a red spinnaker. Her mother, Daphne, approached Frieda about the project, as the self-proclaimed “pageant mother” thought it would be a clever re-use of a material frequently identified with Massachusetts. And the lobster? Not only is it a Massachusetts icon, it’s also a bold red graphic that complements the bright scarlett hat and shoes that Charlotte will wear, on Hollywood Boulevard.
Charlotte, 20, is currently a sophomore at the College of Wooster in Ohio, where she is studying to become a Broadcast Journalist. She also plays Division 1 Lacrosse.

Come and do your shopping under the Christmas stars. This year’s fair is to be held Saturday November 19th, at Monsignor Sullivan Hall (St. Ann’s Hall) Pleasant St. Gloucester, Ma. Doors open at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 2:00 p.m.
Have a fun filled day with the whole family lots to do for mom, dad and kids. Do your Christmas shopping, or get that great pie from the baked table for Thanksgiving. Try your luck at the Chinese Raffle, or win a basket from the wheel of fortune, or take a chance to win an I Pad II, or a Laptop. We have many tables from that perfect Christmas table, to the exquisite Jewelry or find your treasure at the White Elephant table and many more tables. Kids have your picture taken with Santa, but stop first at the Cookie walk table.
