John Ronan writes-

Hi Joey,

We are announcing the NYC premiere of The Yeats Game, which had its world premiere in Gloucester, back in ’07.  With a much re-written script and a fine cast, the comedy opens Feb. 29 for a month’s run.  A pr sheet is attached.
This is a wonderful production, and we have sponsorship help from the American Irish Historical Society, the W.B. Yeats Society of New York, and many others.  Kathy Richter, who has worked both with Abingdon and Atlantic and other theaters, directs.  I hope you can catch the show and let others know about it.
All the best,

John

(New York – January 3, 2012) – American Storyboard presents The Yeats Game, a farce of improbable darkness written by John J. Ronan.  Kathy Richter directs a cast of four including Toby Wherry, Susan Stout, Jennifer Silverstein and Lucius Wall. Performances for The Yeats Game will be held at The Producers’ Club, 358 West 44th Street in NYC for twenty-four performances beginning Wednesday, February 29 to Sunday, March 25, 2012.
The Yeats Game is a farce about middle-age choices and their ridiculous consequences.  At a funeral, as two frisky couples contemplate a friend’s fatal, love-nest heart attack, they flash back to their own recent snowed-in weekend at a mountain cabin.  There, a board game designed for age-hating Boomers leads to tangled romance as the old friends explore love, lust, marriage and mischief.  Just as guilt prompts confession, and all things point to reform, maturity and reluctant virtue, the play’s close tells us that virtue is a weak motivator, immaturity has its advantages – and that the corpse is perhaps not so dead.
A comical, brainy look at the pre-geezer years, The Yeats Game was inspired by the poet’s famous line: “Only

two topics can be of the least interest to a serious and studious mood – sex and the dead.”  The Yeats Game, which played to standing room only audiences at Boston Playwrights Theatre, is a booze-, Viagra-, dice-driven romp.

The Yeats Game is produced by American Storyboard.  Director: Kathy Richter; Playwright: John J. Ronan; Sound Designer: Timothy Dahl; Production Stage Manager: Keri Taylor; Assistant Stage Manager: Kristin Dwyer; Publicist: Paul Siebold/Off Off PR.

The Yeats Game plays for twenty-four performances from Wednesday, February 29 to Sunday, March 25, 2012, with performances Wednesdays & Thursdays at 7:30pm, Saturdays & Sundays at 8pm, and matinee performances on Saturdays and Sundays at 3pm.

Tickets are $30 and can be purchased online at http://www.smarttix.com or by calling 212-868-4444.  For more information, please visit www.theyeatsgame.org

Kent Bowker at the Metz Gallery

The Metz gallery at the Sawyer Free Library will be showing the figurative Essex paintings of Kent Bowker through the month of Feburary.  As described by the artist, ‘I have tried to  catch the essence of the Essex river tidal basin , the great drumlins, and the untidy elegance of the seaside shacks and houses that crowd the Conomo Point, and the sense of tide continually changing the aspect and color of the marsh.  I do not pretend to recreate the landscape or ordinary realism.’

Ayn Rand

image

From Wikipedia

Ayn Rand (play /ˈn ˈrænd/;[1] born Alisa Zinov’yevna Rosenbaum, February 2 [O.S. January 20] 1905 – March 6, 1982) was a Russian-American novelist, philosopher,[2] playwright, and screenwriter. She is known for her two best-selling novels The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged and for developing a philosophical system she called Objectivism.

Born and educated in Russia, Rand moved to the United States in 1926. She worked as a screenwriter in Hollywood and had a play produced on Broadway in 1935–1936. After two initially unsuccessful early novels, she achieved fame with her 1943 novel The Fountainhead. In 1957, she published her best-known work, the philosophical novel Atlas Shrugged. Afterward she turned to nonfiction to promote her philosophy, publishing her own magazines and releasing several collections of essays until her death in 1982.

Rand advocated reason as the only means of acquiring knowledge and rejected all forms of faith and religion. She supported rational egoism and rejected ethical altruism. In politics, she condemned the initiation of force as immoral and opposed all forms of collectivism and statism, instead supporting laissez-faire capitalism, which she believed was the only social system that protected individual rights. She promoted romantic realism in art. She was sharply critical of most other philosophers and philosophical traditions.

The reception for Rand’s fiction from literary critics has historically been mixed and polarizing, with extreme opinions both for and against her work commonly being expressed. Nonetheless, she continues to have a popular following, as well as a growing influence among scholars and academics. Rand’s political ideas have been influential among libertarians and conservatives. The Objectivist movement attempts to spread her ideas, both to the public and in academic settings

The Schooner Ernestina From Len Burgess

One of the 6 remaining old schooners built in Essex, MA is now 118 years old.

image

Len Burgess writes-

On February 1, 1894 118 years ago the Effie M. Morrissey, the ship that became Ernestina, slid down the ways at the James and Tarr Yard in Essex, Massachusetts.

The Ernestina has been designated by the Department of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark. She has sailed on through the century to become one of six remaining Essex-built schooners and is now in New Bedford, MA.

She reached within 600 miles of the North Pole and is the last ship to bring immigrants to this country under sail from the Cape Verde Islands. Ernestina was given to the people of the United States by the people of the Cape Verde Islands in 1982. Her history is a remarkable legacy that spans continents, races and generations.

A very large scale model of the “Morrissey” is in the Waterline Center at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum.

Here are some videos and photos I took of her back in May of 2009-

New Segment- Gloucester House For Sale Of The Week

Talking to Kenny MacCarthy, my podcasting buddy and a man I know to be a man of integrity and around the Real estate business forever I asked him to send me what seemed like a great property for someone thinking about either moving to or relocating within Gloucester.

Of course all of you know my affinity for God’s Country (East Gloucester) so we will start out there with a 4 bedroom house in an awesome neighborhood within a hop skip and a jump to Duckworth’s Bistrot and Smith Cove views.  A short bike ride or walk to Niles Beach or Oakes Cove beach on rocky Neck and the killer elementary school that is with an intensely involved PTA at East Gloucester Elementary.

Here’s the property Kenny pulled up- Now Kenny putting this in front of you and with my recommendation as a great realtor I would hope you would call him to have him show you the property at his cell phone number –

Here’s a map showing just how great this location is and how affordable you can get into what I consider the greatest neighborhood in town to raise a family.

Click the map for the interactive zooming in and out.

Walk to Duckworth’s Bistro, Gloucester Stage, East Gloucester Elementary, Rocky Neck, Oakes Cove Beach, Niles Beach, Beacon Marine, North Shore Arts Association, this is the neighborhood where all the cool new shops have been opening like Again and Again Sailbags, Scout Vintage Finds, Bob and Dave’s, Last Stop Variety, and all of the coolness that is Rocky Neck.

Perfect for anyone from a retiree to a family.

So if you are interested give my boy Kenny a call.
