20×24 Canvas Print Of The Burnham House At Dawn Just Came In

I normally order 16×20 but they offered a 20×24 for only $25 bucks more so I ordered it up. It’s a pretty substantial sized piece.  The colors are ridiculous, the exact reflection of the house in the still water in front of the Burnham House is wild. As a matter of fact The Bean asked me to hold it upside down to see it from that perspective..

So if someone wants it, it’s $150 and ready for hanging.  No framing necessary (the reason everything I do now is canvas framed).

Email me at goodmorninggloucester@yahoo.com.  It’s available for immediate pick up.

Do You Care About The Olympics?

image

You know the last time I gave a shit about the Olympics?

USA v Russia 1980.

I was laid up in bed with a broken leg that I suffered when I fell off the t-bar on my way up the bunny slope to my first ever skiing lesson, my first time ever on skis.

That Olympics was great and I would argue the pinnacle of American pride that I can remember during my lifetime.

But now I don’t know a single person that cares a bit about the Olympics. No one.  Well no-one except the athletes themselves and family members I suppose.

The amount of money poured into advertising for the Olympic games and the stadiums built are staggering.   I don’t know if it’s worthwhile for these companies or not to spend this much dough on advertising.  You would think their marketing teams would know what they are doing at these huge companies but then again think about all the companies that overpay for naming rights to stadiums when they are flush with cash and we only find out a couple years later they go bankrupt.  I suppose blowing tons of money on stupid campaigns doesn’t help the bottom line but whatever, it’s not my dough.

As a devout and completely biased homer for all teams that represent our geographic region and USA in the Olympics this isn’t a slight to the athletes, I wish them the best.  I just don’t know when the whole allure of the Olympics fell apart for me and I wonder if others feel the same.

Vote for how much you enjoy the Olympics below-

Matty Olson, owner of Surfside Subs just stopped by to pick up his lobsters to make his outstanding lobster rolls and I asked him when was teh last time he cared about the Olympics.  his response- “Never”  I asked what about the Miracle on Ice?’
His reply he was too young to remember that because he’s 35.
I rest my case.

HarborWalk Comes to the West End of Main Street Gloucester MA

Fred Bodin writes-

Sean Marler from Mystic Scenic Studios levels the top of a Story Moment marker on Main Street in front of the Sargent Murray Gllman House. Sean estimates there are about eight more markers left to install signage on.

The narrative sign with smart phone QR code is then epoxied and bolted to the granite marker. The post card shows Main Street and Gray’s Hardware on the left, which I wrote about on GMG in September 2011.  All I need now is a smart phone!

Small sailboat rental?

Joe, a few years ago you helped me find Patty Page of GHS sailing. We went sailing with a GHS young man for an hour or so  and in exchange, made a  donation to the program.
I called her and they don’t do that anymore. I tried the YMCA at Patty’s suggestion, no good. I tried Brown’s in Gloucester and the Sandy Bay club in Rockport- all no good. No luck with internet searches either.
Any Idea where I could rent a small sailboat for a few hours between Aug 2 and 7? Thanks for help.

Wrapped Stick

July 14 – September 30: water, water: A multimedia installation by Sarah Hollis Perry & Rachel Perry Welty
water, water is the first collaborative museum show for mother–daughter artists Sarah Hollis Perry and Rachel Perry Welty. In addition to maintaining separate practices, Perry and Welty have been working collaboratively since they overlapped as students at the School of the MFA, Boston in 2000. They have two permanent sculptural installations at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts.
Perry and Welty organized and filmed their video performance "Drawing a Line with the Tide" in July 2011 using eighty volunteers from the seaside village of Annisquam in Gloucester, Massachusetts where they both live. Moving to avoid the inevitable, the performers demonstrate a futile attempt to control nature with its stubborn adherence to the circling of time.
Included in the installation are three short films in which the artists explore aspects of identity and the complexity of the mother-daughter relationship of dependence, independence, and interdependence.
Gallery Talk with Sarah Hollis Perry & Rachel Perry Welty
July 21 and August 1 at 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
$10 members; $20 nonmembers (includes Museum admission). Reservations are required.

Gloucester Gig Rowers get a new Gig! From Rick Isaacs

Hi Joey,

Gloucester Gig Rowers held our christening and launching party on Sunday evening, 8 Jul for our new 32′ Cornish Pilot Gig, custom-built for us by the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s Champlain Longboats School  http://www.lcmm.org/education/champlain_longboats.htm .  Here are a few pictures of our party party to celebrate the arrival of our new boat, and christen her.  She can be seen moored at the Harriet Webster Pier at Gloucester Maritime, on Harbor Loop.

The boat’s name is the "Annie B", and one picture shows Annie Banks, her namesake and one of the chief founders of Gloucester Gig Rowers, breaking the traditional bottle of champaign over her bow.

Sorry this took a while – I needed to secure the club’s approval for all of these mug shots to be published before sending this.  We would be grateful for any coverage which you could provide us!

All best,

Rick Isaacs

Item too heavy to drop off?  Call Lisa Ramos at 978-290-3005 and we will gladly schedule a convenient time to pick up your donation.

Not sure what we are looking for?
Antiques and all old stuff, costume jewelry, furniture in good condition, paintings, pictures and art, old coins and stamps, clothing in great condition, knick knacks, children’s indoor and  outdoor toys and furniture, tools old and new, baby stuff, gift certificates, books, frames, campers, snow blowers, ice skates, roller blades, bikes, sporting equipment, if we can sell it we’ll take it.

Our new facility, one of six (2) two room schoolhouses left in the USA, built in 1895 will function as our historical museum and local cultural center.  The Blynman School (Little Red Schoolhouse) served Magnolia’s students for over 103 years until it was closed by the City.      We are thrilled to have the opportunity to own this Magnolia landmark,  but before we can begin our journey of moving in and promoting the history and culture of this village in Gloucester, Mass we are going to need to do some expensive repairs. This fall we will need to install a new heating system and repair the roof.
With your generosity, we will be able to fund the building projects and pay for maintenance.

Announcing “Cape Ann ReImaged”
Gloucester, MA, June 29, 2012:  Local artist Clare Higgins is pleased to announce the launching of “Cape Ann ReImaged.”
“Cape Ann ReImaged” is a series of digital art works depicting some of Cape Ann’s best known icons and traditions, with a special twist. While Cape Ann has long been a favorite subject for artists, from Winslow Homer and Edward Hopper to many artists of today, Clare has chosen to explore what might have happened if Renaissance, abstract and pop artists had visited the area. “Cape Ann ReImaged” depicts Motif No. 1, the Greasy Pole, Man at the Wheel and more as they might have been envisioned by these artists.
Clare is originally from New York and moved to Gloucester in 2004. She is a writer and digital artist who enjoys creating combinations of classic and modern material. Her play Queer Bent for the Tudor Gent (a Shakespearean version of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy) won two competitions and was performed on stage in Sydney, Australia and New York City. Her published works include a Gilbert and Sullivan-style satire of Seinfeld and humorous pieces imagining how Shakespeare would react to modern technology.
One of Clare’s digital artworks, Cats on the Jatte, based on Seurat’s Sunday Afternoon on the Grande Jatte, was featured in the 2009 Cape Ann Notecard Collection. Cats on the Jatte is part of her “Modern Art Cats” series, feline interpretations of famous art works.
In keeping with her love of mixing seemingly disparate styles and substances, Clare turned an eye toward Cape Ann’s signature events and landmarks and was inspired to imagine how such artists as Da Vinci, Picasso and Warhol might have depicted them. The result is “Cape Ann ReImaged.” If you’d enjoy an innovative way of viewing your favorite parts of Cape Ann, take a trip to http://www.cafepress.com/capeannreimaged.

One Year Anniversary of the Launch of the Schooner Ardelle From Len Burgess

Great weather Monday night for a special sail to celebrate the launch of the schooner Ardelle. It was one year ago last July 9, 2011 that the schooner splashed down into the Essex river in front of about 2500 people. It was a textbook Essex side launch that occurred at high tide about 6 p.m in the evening. What a sight is was. And, a year later here’s Capt. Harold Burnham’s doing what he loves! It would not have been possible without the amazing help of all of the shipwrights, friends and family who helped build and launch the Ardelle!

Harold lights a candle for the cake that celebrates the one year anniversary of the launch of the schooner Ardelle.

Loblolly Cove, Rockport, circa 1920

image

Loblolly Cove, Rockport, circa 1920 Alice M. Curtis/©Fredrik D. Bodin

Gloucester photographer Alice Curtis shot this photograph from Eden Road, looking across Loblolly Cove. The tip of Emerson Point is on the right. Thacher Island sits in the distance, with its two 124 feet tall granite towers. Built in 1861, Thacher has the only remaining twin lights still operating in the United States. I’ve been asked several times in the gallery what loblolly means. Since 1597, loblolly was a restorative thick stew or gruel served on a ship to ailing or injured sailors, much like the way chicken soup is usde today for colds. Also an old British and American naval term, it refers to a warship surgeon’s assistant – a loblolly boy.
