Morning Sun 7-26-12

Hi Joey,

I wanted to send in this photo of my amazing friend Leslie Witham who came down with her hubby and adorable 2 year old daughter to run the beautiful and scenic Cape Ann 1/2 Marathon today. They left their house in Waterboro, ME this morning at 5:00 AM so they could get her packet etc.  This is her running on Bass Ave across from Gloucester Elks, what she called the sun stretch. It was great seeing not only her run but so many runners out there today!  It was crazy hot and it was amazing how many people ran.  Congratulations to all the runners.  You all did a great job!

Clocking the TRIAD at Eastern Point

Hi Joey,

We came across the TRIAD at Eastern Point  Saturday and clocked it by keeping pace: 12.6 MPH!

That’s pretty fast considering the wind that afternoon.

Enjoy!

Hey Joey,
Thanks again for taking the ride with us this morning.  We wanted to make an offer to your readers that if they mention GMG we will donate $10 of proceeds to non profits (5 to cultural center on rocky neck and 5 to whomever you; (Joey) chooses).

Merluzzi- If the old timers were still alive they’d be having a field day.

Guys like Mickey Red, Leo The Flounder, they’d be going crazy for the whiting that’s been coming in.  Fried, in a broodu, you name it- Whiting, my favorite fish to eat.

Let the Menagani Babu eat 30 day old swordfish, I’ll eat a mess of fried whiting any day over that crap.

When we were in Ravello, Italy we saw the Merluzzi at a Farmer’s Market. Same fish in the Mediterranean that we’re landing here in Gloucester.

Check out her website www.gloucestergoods.com and order up yours like right now.

What, you’re still reading?  You mean to tell me you didn’t click on the www.gloucestergoods.com link and get to ordering your very own personalized buoy? That is totally unacceptable!!

Thank you Lily!

I Propose A Monster Lobster Bash At Maritime Gloucester’s New Harriett Webster Pier for Schooner Festival

At night under the lights- huge rows of picnic tables.  The crews of the Schooners, Our Fishermen, Our Community-  A lobster, ear of corn.  Kegs of Fisherman’s  Brew, Ryan and Wood Folly Cove Rum, fun under the lights!!!!

A bash, proceeds to Maritime Gloucester, fun for all, move a ton of lobsters which help promote our local lobster industry.  Let’s Do It! Let’s make It An Annual Tradition!

Kinda Like The White Party Where everyone brings their own picnic baskets and tables.

Our lobster dock Captain Joes will provide them for tiny margin over cost.

Schooner Festival should be one of the Top 3 events in this whole city but it always seems to come and hardly anyone except for the schoonerheads knows about it.

Lets get the community down the Heritage Center and blow it out!  Reminiscent of the old Lumper picnics.

Captain Lou Williams Catches A “Rare For These Waters” Triggerfish

2012-08-04 11.48.40

We usually see one of these a year.  In the past years Aaron aboard the Lady Margaret, Doc Herrick aboard the Dog and I caught one.  If you notice all three got landed in August with the warm water temps.

Emily Dickinson Quote of The Week from Greg Bover

“My friends are my estate.”

Born to an Amherst Massachusetts family with deep Puritan roots, Dickinson was better known in her lifetime as a gardener than as a poet. Famously reclusive, she spent decades brooding on the mysteries of life and death, and became more and more preoccupied with the latter. A few of her poems were published in the The Atlantic Monthly, but the vast majority of the more than 800 she wrote were not known to the public until after her death. A complete collection did not appear until the 1950’s.

Because I could not stop for Death-

He kindly stopped for me-

The Carriage held but just ourselves-

And Immortality.

Your Opportunity To Sail in the Gloucester Schooner Race!

Hi Joey… Some visitors may not be aware of the opportunity to sail in the Gloucester Schooner Race.  To do so is an unforgettable experience.  Besides Gloucester’s THOMAS E LANNON there are other schooners with sites available for paying passengers.  In these tough times participation for some schooners is dependent on passenger bookings.  Here are two historic schooners in that category.

Mystic Seaport’s BRILLIANT (1932) is one of the world’s most beautiful wooden boats.  There is an opportunity to sail the round trip from Mystic to Gloucester.  Info on this website  http://www.mysticseaport.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.viewPage&page_id=FF10EA76-B0D0-D05E-1A1360424E13F653

TYRONE (1939) designed by Manchester’s Sam Crocker sails out of Chatham and has a few berths available.  This includes a sail to the Block Island Schooner Rendezvous prior to the Gloucester Festival and  the race to Provincetown that follows.

Here are a couple of pics of our new gallery, and the way we plan to make money to pay for it.

The sign is getting plenty of laughs around Lanesville. So far we’ve made $1.05, but somebody stole the dollar.

On that day scores of artists from near and far will be arriving in Essex to artistically capture the Town’s limitless variety of local scenes and its magnificent landscape.

The event is two-fold: Registered painters will Paint Essex from

9 AM – 3 PM followed by a Wet Paint Auction and Reception from

8 AM. Cost is $5 per painter.  Tickets for the Wet Paint Auction and Reception are $25 per person (ticket includes one beverage) – $10 for registered painters.  Tickets to the Auction and Reception will be available for purchase August 1st from various merchants throughout Essex including Eventide Gallery, Main Street Antiques, Bider’s Antiques and the Essex Shipbuilding Museum.
