Hold Fast and Stay True From Fred Bodin

Fred writes-

What a week, heavy and horrific. Today, Sunday, I wanted to go to church, something I don’t do enough. This a window from the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church near where I sat today. I came away with this thought: "Hold Fast and Stay True."

Deej Viau Would Like a Little Earth Clean Up Help In Her Neighborhood

Deej submits yesterday early afternoon-

This is Gloucester Ave. across the street from the bowling alley up to Maplewood.  I’ve been yellow bagging it today and can’t put a dent in how bad it is.  I could stand still, not
move my feet and with my grabber, fill a yellow bag to the brim, move two
feet and do it again.

and an update from Deej last night-

I went back out tonight to another street one block over.  Again, unbelievable, adjacent to a building on Grove Street .  I’m plowing away and a little 8 year old named Jake comes out with his grabber.  He wants to help me.  My yellow bag is full and I was just about to go home but I couldn’t resist.  He ran in his house and got his own bag to share with me.  He asked me why people put trash on the ground and I had no good answer for him.  We chatted away about school and homework and reading books.  I told him thanks little pal and he asked if we could meet tomorrow.  I was so overwhelmed.  We parted but I got back into it a little further up the block and got over this broken fence.  Jake must have seen me and I see him coming back up the street with a huge wheel barrel.  We found so much more stuff, even a new hockey stick he asked if he could have.  What a great boy.  His parents should be proud.  I will write him a thank you note and get him a Friendly’s  gift card,  not because I think he should be rewarded but just because he is an awesome kid.  Nice end to a dirty day!

Joey,

Since being burned last June, I have had 5 skin grafts and 5 surgeries. Between the surgeries and follow up appointments at Mass General Hospital, I have found myself on Cape Ann once or twice a month. Being treated as a "local" by the community has been wonderful. My friends are having this fundraiser to help me with my expenses as I have been out of work 7 of the last 10 months and when I am back to work, it is only part time until the next surgery. Bob and Dave from VINTAGE @ 211 East Main St. Gloucester was kind enough to donate a 100% wool hand knit Irish sweater towards the raffle. Thank you Bob and Dave. If anyone else wishes to donate or contribute a raffle item/gift certificate, I will be back in the area, May 9-10 and I could pick up at that time. Or they could be mailed to the p.o. box address on the fundraiser information sheet.

As always, post all, some or none.

thank you, Joey,

Lisa Cardinal

Boston Marathon bombing victims face daunting uninsured costs

Dear Joey,

I’m not sure what the appropriate format is to submit this to you at GMG, but there is a small window of opportunity to target help for these innocent victims. The NYT just published this article this morning:  http://mobile.nytimes.com/2013/04/23/us/for-boston-victims-price-of-recovery-may-be-another-burden.xml?f=19

One Fund Boston has been established by Governor Patrick and Mayor Menino, and it accepts PayPal, credit cards and checks. I’ve already posted this on my FaceBook account.

Thanks, Rick Isaacs

Roger Davis reports:

On Sunday, the Cape Ann Trails Stewards organized a cleanup along the trails around and above the Goose Cove Reservoir.  A number of people worked at cleaning up the service road around the reservoir (including at least a couple of dads with young sons).  Patti Amaral reported collecting several bags of trash around the parking area at the entrance to Dogtown.  These photos show the cleanup at an apparent party spot near the city’s compost area in Dogtown.  A group of  a dozen volunteers collected a dozen bags full of empty cans, bottles and litter.  This area borders a sensitive vernal wetland, so it was good to see it cleaned up.  It was good to see so many people stepping up to return our woodlands to its beautiful natural state.
Kudos to volunteers. Kudos for Cape Ann Trails Stewards.  Keep your eyes open for future activities of this newly organized volunteer group.

Rally poster

Hi Joey,

The Northeast Seafood Coalition (NSC) will host a Groundfish Industry Rally on April 29 at 11 a.m. at the Boston Fish Pier in Boston’s Waterfront District to unite the industry and call upon the federal government for disaster assistance and mitigation needs to keep small businesses viable and preserve the vital and historic groundfish fishing industry.

“This is the time for industry, friends of the industry, and seafood consumers to come together and ask for help! We’re excited to unite in Boston, the hub of the Northeast groundfish fishery, to discuss important issues affecting the industry today and how we can preserve the fleet for tomorrow,” said Jackie Odell, executive director of NSC.

The upcoming fishing years for the Northeast groundfish fishery were supposed to be a time of prosperity—key stocks were on target to rebuild by 2014.  Now, however, despite adhering to strict science and management measures and remaining within allowable catch limits, the Northeast commercial groundfish fishery has been declared a disaster.

This industry has faced numerous hardships over the years, but nothing like what is to come May 1. The industry will face crippling reductions in catch limits of up to 77 percent on key groundfish stocks. Fishermen and their families face a “perfect storm” of circumstances, which will cause severe hardship for not only small fishing businesses, but fishing communities, on-shore businesses, and American seafood consumers.

Due to extremely limited parking on the Boston Fish Pier, free parking will be available at 22 Fid Kennedy Avenue, which is a short distance from the Pier. NSC will provide a shuttle service from the parking lot to the rally. We kindly ask those planning to attend to park no later than 10:15 a.m. For more information, please visit http://northeastseafoodcoalition.org/Industry_Rally.html.

CAPE ANN TRAIL STEWARDS

Inaugural Event

Cape Ann Trail Stewards (CATs), a new non-profit organization, announces its upcoming inaugural event.

Cape Ann Trail Stewards was founded by citizens of Gloucester, Rockport, Manchester and Essex to help landowners and conservation organizations protect, maintain and expand Cape Ann’s trail networks.

By matching volunteers with trails in need of stewardship, CATs will connect Cape Ann residents with the vast network of trails in the area and help preserve these recreational resources for our community. Cape Ann Trail Stewards will arrange workdays where volunteers can learn about trail construction and maintenance.

The board of directors includes residents of Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester, and representatives from the Essex County Greenbelt, Essex County Trails Association, Cape Ann Climbing Coalition, the New England Mountain Bike Association and other user groups.

Cape Ann Trail Stewards invites the public to join the inaugural clean up workday at the city of Gloucester’s Goose Cove Reservoir on Sunday, April 21st (the day before Earth Day) beginning at 1PM.

We will meet in the lot along Gee Avenue. Participants should wear sturdy shoes and dress appropriately for the weather (the event is rain or shine). Bring rakes, shovels and buckets if you have them. CATs will supply gloves and other materials.

Register for this event, join our roster of regular volunteers and learn more about us atwww.capeanntrailstewards.org
