Backyard Growers Is Growing!

Hello Friends, Colleagues & Get Fit Gloucester Partners,
The Backyard Growers Program has just launched its first-ever on-line fundraising campaign! We are raising money to host a FoodCorps Service Member next year and to support our expansion into Gloucester’s elementary schools (read below for details).
Check out our campaign at www.indiegogo.com

Please consider making a donation and/or forwarding our campaign to your networks.
The fundraiser video features my lovely daughters, and is guaranteed to put a smile on your face : )
Thank you!
Lara
Here’s the nitty-gritty on who we are and what we’re asking for (you can also read this on our campaign site):

What we do
Backyard Growers is a program of the Cape Ann Farmers’ Market. We are part of the farmers’ market strategy for increasing fresh veggie eating in Gloucester!

Since 2010 the Backyard Growers Program, in partnership with The Food Project, has provided low- to moderate-income Gloucester residents with backyard raised-bed vegetable gardens, garden training, and ongoing mentor support.
It’s simple! We help people grow their own fresh vegetables. Our survey results show that having a backyard garden and knowing how to use it:

  • Increases the amount of fresh produce a family eats,
  • Gets kids excited about eating fresh veggies,
  • Saves money on grocery bills, and
  • Builds community within neighborhoods.

We are expanding!
Next fall we will expand into Gloucester’s elementary schools, bringing our comprehensive garden program to over 1300 students! Our program will build the capacity of each school community to manage their school farms over the long term. Students will:

  • Learn through doing in the school garden!
  • Grow and harvest their own salad greens and eat them as part of school lunch in the cafeteria.
  • Plant crops in June to be harvested when they return to school in the fall as part of an annual harvest celebration.

To do this we need help…
We have an opportunity to host a FoodCorps Service Member for one year starting in September.

FoodCorps is a national nonprofit organization that works with schools to create a healthier school food environment. It is part of the AmeriCorps service network, and targets improving childhood health by placing service members in public schools around the country to teach hands-on nutrition education; build and care for school gardens; and work to bring high-quality local food to school cafeterias.

Our Service Member will build the capacity of each school to maintain productive school gardens with the goal of school gardens becoming part of the culture of each school!

Donate!
Your contribution will make all this possible! Please help us raise $7,500 by donating to our campaign.

  • $5,000 = Our salary contribution for a one-year, full-time FoodCorps Service Member
  • $2,500 = Program expansion costs (garden & program supplies, additional staff costs)

We have some fun perks for you, including free seeds & seedlings and garden training, and some special ways for you to connect with the school garden program. If we don’t reach our entire fundraising goal we will ramp up the grant writing. If we exceed our goal, we will put the funds toward the future sustainability of the Backyard Growers Program.

Help us Spread the Word!
Forward this indiegogo campaign to your people.

2013 Season, 61st Year of the International Dory Races

2013 Season, 61st Year of the International Dory Races

The weather is improving and eliminations to qualify to race the Canadians are only a few weeks away (Saturday, June 8th).  I hope your training is well on its way!  This May, we have undertaken an extremely popular “learn to row” program with 33 new rowers and many members volunteering to be mentors.  The program is a great success so far, but we still need mentors any Wednesday at 6PM or Sunday at 9AM to help with the rowing instruction.  Please let me know if you can help out!

On another note, there will be a change in the schedule of events this weekend.  We will postpone the race dory launch from Saturday May 18th to Sunday May 26th meeting at noon at Eastern Ave Self Storage (bring a small trailer if you have one).  In the mean time, this Sunday May 19th, we will be meeting at noon at Eastern Ave Self Storage to finish painting the race dories.  Sorry for the time change, but I have to fit in the learn to row sessions before.  Please let me know if you can make these events.

I look forward to seeing you all on the water!

Erik

Don’t forget Father’s Day presents from our apparel site linked to our website www.internationaldories.com or like us on facebook!

Sunday May 19th          12 noon                        Dory painting at Eastern Ave Self Storage

Sunday May 26th          12 noon                        Dory launch starting at Eastern Ave Self Storage to launch at HS boat ramp

Saturday June 8th        9AM                             Elimination races at Niles Beach …sign-ups at St. Peter’s Square the Friday night before at 6PM

We could use a trailer or two for the 26th as well as a boat to tow them over to the town landing.

This Saturday — May 18th — the Veteran’s Center on Emerson Avenue will be holding a yard and bake sale to benefit our military. Please stop by from 9am until 2pm to show your support.

Dear GMG,

For those in the community who are concerned about the welfare of animals, there’s an upcoming forum at City Hall on Thursday May 23 @ 7PM. The goal is to bring the community together in light of the recent dog abuse cases and learn more about: abuse/neglect of animals; how these situations can be prevented; what to do if you are concerned a dog is being mistreated; and what the role of law enforcement is as it pertains to animal cruelty.

Michael Keiley of the MSPCA at Nevins Farm and our Chief of Gloucester Police, Leonard Campanello will be delivering short presentations and then we’ll have an audience Q & A period afterward.

If anyone has any questions, email gacforum@gmail.com.

Thanks for posting on your site!

Power Nap From Al Bezanson

Stubby sez___

When you’ve been patrolling the wharf all night, standing daytime gate duty and greeting ARDELLE’S passengers you gotta catch forty winks when you can. Even in the blazing sunshine.   Especially when you’re 72 in human years.  Such is the life of a Maritime Gloucester Volunteer.  Not complaining, mind you.

As told to Al Bezanson

Get this salad at The Manchester Athletic Club-

Order the Greek Salad and then top it off wit a scoop of chicken salad and use balsamic vinegar instead of the Greek dressing.

Aquatro Gallery Is Back To Rock The Neck For Summer 2013

AQUATRO_BLUE_PMS_7460_00F2F2

Aquatro Opens A Gorgeous New Gallery For Summer 2013 In Gloucester’s Rocky Neck Cultural District

After last year’s success, Aquatro Gallery returns to Rocky Neck for the 2013 summer season in a new, larger location with a carefully-selected group of works by talented artists they’ve invited.

Aquatro quickly established itself as a must-stop destination in Rocky Neck for tourists and regulars alike. This came as no surprise to returning artists/designer, Gigi Mederos, whose freshman year on the Neck saw her and partner, Stevie Black, running Adriana Mederos Studio and Gallery, a live-and-work space they serendipitously found after enjoying a two-week run as a guest  artist of Ejay Lefavour’s Khan Studio Gallery during summer 2011. Once again, like last year when they were a couple doors down the wharf at Gallery #6, Aquatro Gallery needs more room to grow.

Aquatro Gallery remains bright and inviting, with an even better selection of contemporary fine art, jewelry and artful accessories in its new location at 77 Rocky Neck Avenue, Gallery #4 – still on Madfish Wharf in the heart of the Rocky Neck Art Colony, where the high-season runs from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. This year Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of summer on the Neck and Aquatro Gallery will be open from Wednesday through Monday that weekend, from 12PM – 8 PM; their normal hours throughout the summer until Columbus Day.Catherine-McMurray_Mackersie-Copper-glazed_Ceramics_2012

Here is but a taste of what you can expect to find at Aquatro this year:

belle+me, the fun, flirty, French line of scarves and pendants created by Rocky Neck friends, Anne Malvaux and Lisa LeVasseur.

Todas Las Musas, silver and enamel jewelry from Alejandra González and Gela Mederos.

Tami Rodrig’s delightful earrings and pendants from Happy Art Studio make their Rocky Neck debut at Aquatro.

Elegant and functional Turning Grace Studio pottery by New England native and now Nashville ceramicist, Catherine McMurray.

The intelligently humorous and deceptively simple wire sculptures of Boston’s South End artist, Brian Murphy.

You will also find paintings by Ben MacAdam and Tom Nihan, mixed media constructions by Liz Horwitz, and Mary Bowles’ decorative mosaic mirrors will make you happy to catch glimpses of yourself throughout your day. Aquatro also introduces Glamourosa, beaded earrings by young Cambridge artist, Alisa Amador and new, first-editions of designs and products from Guatopo, the surface and textile design studio launched last year by Stevie Black and Gigi Mederos.

THE PREACHER’S SON —- The Story From Tuffy

30 miles off the north coast of Honduras are the three Bay Islands of Utila ,Roatan and Guanaja . Roatan , in the middle,is the largest and most populated . Roatan has a International Airport and easy access from the States. On Roatan there is a small town called WEST END . There is a Huge Almond Tree on the beach across from Woody’s grocery and that is where the fishermen gather and stay out of the hot sun. They can be contacted here for fishing day trips.Their boats are also moored there.Under the Almond Tree is where you will find my friend ENRICK BUSH . A days catch for Enrick can vary from – Wahoo , Mahi-Mahi , Barracuda and many species of tuna. He leaves twice a day .Enrick doesn’t just go fishing – he goes catching. It’s a blast and a great way to see a beautiful island by boat and come home with dinner .   If ever on the island ,you can reach Enrick @    bushenrick@hotmail.com      or under the almond tree

Manchester and Brooklyn Represent!

Fred Bodin submits-

Ellie Grose of Manchester (MA) and Amier Carmel of Brooklyn (NY) came into my gallery this afternoon. Ellie is an old friend of my potter, Kristen Brousseau of Costa Rica. I gave Ellie the green plate she’s holding in the photo. Amier, born in Manhattan and now living in Brooklyn, is a frequent visitor to Cape Ann. He watched the second plane hit the World Trade Tower and the collapse of the building. Being a licensed social worker, he went directly to the scene and offered all assistance he could. His story took my breath away, and I’ll video the story for you this summer. Great folks!

Another Victory For The Harborwalk

2013 MUSE Awards – Congratulations

Congratulations HarborWalk folk!

The Walking Cinemas of the HarborWalk are receiving a national – and apparently quite distinguished – MUSE award from the American Association of Museums.  The “medals” are given out the weekend of May 17th – (we’ll hope for the gold.)

Untravel Media developed the Walking Cinemas, and were creative people who completely “got” Gloucester.  And in the inimitable way that Gloucester has, the community recognized compatible folk doing cool stuff, and joined in.  Just listening to “Uncle Joe” tell the history of Fiesta in under 30 sec, or watching a demonstration of how to “do the walk” is enough to make you glad to live here.  (By the way, you can take a short cut and watch the Walking Cinema clips on the website – www.ghwalk.org – or put on your headphones with your iphone and do it live.)

Over time, people will find all these different treasures along the Walk.  There are the Story Moments, and also the Postcards, and most definitely the Walking Cinema.  This award will be wonderful for alerting travelers to seek them out.

Congratulations to all!!  Please share this with others you know who starred on the Walking Cinema stage.  They are medalists!
