Fishing Report From Captain Skip Montello

Hi Joey,

Here is the North Coast Angler weekly fishing report :

http://www.northcoastangler.com/

Fishing Report: 6-14-2013

The striper action overall continues very good from Cape Ann to the Merrimack River. Stripers ranging in size from “dinks” of 8 inches to keeper sized fish pushing 40+ inches.

The Candy House at Little River continues to provide local anglers with fair action using small topwaters, metals and soft plastics. Most of the stripers are of the dink variety, but a few up to 25 inches are being taken. If you plan to fish there this weekend, bring along the bug spray as the “no-seeums” are also biting and especially fierce when the wind is light. The oceanside action is also picking up with catches being reported from the boat and shore anglers alike. Brian O’C reported taking (and releasing) a 40+ inch striper at mid-week in an undisclosed shore location along the Gloucester shoreline. He also reported consistent action still happening in the Essex River backwaters. The local water temps are still running cold so I expect the stripers to continue providing some fairly good fishing this weekend in the backwaters and out front.

Happy Dumpling Fire Report From Deputy Fire Miles Schlicte

image

A man inside of the just opened Happy Dumpling restaurant noticed a haze of smoke accumulating inside the restaurant and called the fire department. After calling the FD the man saw flames showing along the peak of the roof. At this point the man ran to the stairs of the apartment on the right side of the building and alerted the residents that the building was on fire. A young woman grabbed her infant from the crib and exited the building unharmed. At the same time the owner of the restaurant directed her employee to run up the stairs to the apartment on the left side of the building to alert the single female who lived there. That resident was not home at the time.
The fire department arrived on scene to heavy smoke and fire showing at the front of the building along the roof soffit.  The first officer on scene announced a working fire. HQ Engine 1 and Rescue 1 stretched two hose lines into the building to attack the fire from the inside and drive it back out through the soffit. The crews were greatly delayed in getting to the seat of the fire by obstructions within the building and limited access to the section of the roof on fire.  Due to this delay and rapidly spreading fire a second alarm was struck by the IC who had taken command upon arrival shortly after the HQ crews. While these hose lines were being stretched the L1 crew raised the ladder to the roof and cut a large hole in the roof above the visible flames to allow heat and fire to escape to the outside and prevent fire from spreading under the roof to the rest of the building.
Once the hose lines were in place inside the building and the vent hole in place in the roof the order was given to break out the rest of the third floor windows for additional ventilation. This allowed the smoke inside to lift and the crews were able to drive the flames back to the outside of the building while preventing further spread under the roof. This additional oxygen initially fed and expanded the visible fire which was seen rolling over the ceilings in the third floor windows until the crews inside could control it and drive the flames out the windows and the roof vent hole.
Gloucester crews were greatly assisted at the scene by Rockport and Essex Engines and the Manchester ladder truck. Downtown Gloucester was protected by Beverly and Hamilton Engines and an Ipswich Ladder truck. These out of town companies responded on several other calls while the fire was being fought.
Local inspectors from the building, electrical, and health department were called to the scene along with the State Fire Marshalls office. Perishable foods from the restaurant were removed from the restaurant and taken to the convenience store next door where the owner provided refrigerator space.
A joint investigation between the GFD, GPD, the building and electrical inspectors along with the State Fire Marshalls office determined that the fire started in the soffit on the exterior of the building. The material that caught fire initially before spreading to the building is believed to have been nesting material from either birds or squirrels. It is unknown what the source of the ignition was. Further investigation is ongoing.
Electricity to the building was cut and the building secured by a board up company prior to the FD clearing the scene and turning the building over to its owners.
All four residents of the building are staying with family.
One firefighter suffered a twisted knee inside the building but remained on duty for the rest of the night.
No other injuries were reported.
While damage is estimated to be between 25 and 50, 000 dollars, the value of the property saved is estimated to be between 350 and 400,000 dollars. Prompt notification, a short response time and very aggressive firefighting prevented this fire from being much worse.

For years, we found his byline under the headline of every major fishery article that we read at the Gloucester Daily Times.  It told us to read on for the truth and an unbiased perspective that a great journalist presents regarding our livelihoods.Richard’s articles provided the information to the public of the complexities that made up the convoluted issues surrounding the stories of the New England ground fishery — something that was just about impossible. continued@http://fisherynation.com/archives/10071

Fire at 91 Washington Street, Home of Happy Dumplings

It’s so sad that the happy Dumplings had to encounter this mess just as they got set up and opened. They’re on the first floor in this photo. Two Sisters? They could probably use some support and some +++ local business.

Maritime Gloucester Initiates Sea Scout Program

It has been many years since Cape Ann operated an active Sea Scout group for youth, and Maritime Gloucester is proud to announce that it is starting a new Sea Scout “Ship” effective immediately.

The program is a national co-ed outdoor program for young adults ages 14 to 20 that promotes knowledge of our nation’s maritime heritage and provides young people with positive opportunities through hands-on maritime education, training and experiences. The Gloucester “Ship” would serve the North Shore and is a part of the Yankee Clipper Council, BSA, Inc., and is headquartered in Gloucester, MA.

Being youth driven, Sea Scout participants truly have the opportunity to be in charge of the direction of the ship while adult leaders take on a more advisory role balancing adventure with  responsibility.  While some crew join for the leadership experience, camaraderie and fun, others join who wish to prepare or maritime careers for careers in the marine sciences.

For more information about serving as an adult volunteer or being a youth member, please contact Amanda Madeira at amadeira@maritimegloucester.org or at 978-281-0470.

Liz Gerstein Has Some Nice Things To Say

Hi Joey,

I just wanted to let you know that I absolutely LOVE your blog!  I truly hope the people of Gloucester know what a gem they have in you.  You are a real ambassador for the city.  I was only in Gloucester for one afternoon last year and mostly because of your blog and the contributors, wish I could move there!!  If all works out, I will be lucky enough to spend a week there at the end of the summer. I do have one question, not sure it has anything to do with you, do you know why so many of the webcams aren’t on line.  Yes I get my morning dose first of Good Morning Gloucester and then check out what cameras are up and running before I leave for work.

Anyway, thanks for all the enjoyment.  (You did have me rolling in laughter over the midget pickles!)

Liz

Hi Liz thanks so much for the kind comments.  It’s what let’s our contributors know that heir work is appreciated and truth be told if the comments dried up our contributors would be less motivated to produce the best content they could produce.

In regards to the webcams, some of the owners of the webcams simply haven’t kept up with keeping them on and I just don’t have the time to contact each one and walk them through the steps to get them going.  A great FOB Tim Blakely generously did the installs for next to nothing in labor but we lost Tim this past winter to cancer and if the people who own the cameras would see the benefit to having them up and running and embedded on their own websites I think it would prove to be very beneficial to them.  I look at the stats for the Gloucester Webcam site and it gets great traffic every single day.

So thanks again for your kind comments Smile

Community Stuff 6/13/13

Colleen Coogan from Rockport submits-

My kids have been involved in drama programs in Rockport on and off from first grade through middle school.  Every opportunity has provided them with skills, abilities, self confidence – enhancing their other social and learning experiences.  I am grateful that in this small Cape Ann community, we have talented adults interested in creating drama for, and with, our children

The Middle School productions are large, and inclusive, supported by parents behind the scenes, helping kids create costumes and stage sets for the production.  Mr. McCarthy and his skilled team start with a product in mind – the play that has been selected.  They aim for that goal from tryouts through production. The cast, its ensemble-chemistry and individual skills, adds uniqueness, but some predictability is desired and inherent in this type of production.  Within this small district, we are blessed with talent in both faculty and students; it is only the size of the children that reminds me that these are middle school productions.  Mr. McCarthy somehow inspires and corrals middle schoolers’ capacity for individual drama, fostering new friendships, team skills, and self-confidence.

Experiences with Kristina Martin and Rockport Elementary’s multiage teachers’ Tell About the Time productions and Dona Lambert’s Art Harbor, Summer Pie Theatre, and Coupe troupes are so different from the Middle School productions; it’s like comparing a roasted chicken meal with chicken gumbo. You know the roasted chicken meal will be delicious, wholly nutritious, some variability coming from the spices and side dishes.  The gumbo, well, it could be messy, but is always a rich, interesting and spicy experience, dependent on the ingredients on hand.  The actors, of varied ages, bring unique skills, stories, and interests.  These “ingredients” are assessed before plays are chosen or created.  The resulting shows are magic and always unique, although priorities are more about nurturing the actors than about the actual productions.  The children are transformed, together and individually, by the experiences.  They gain faith in their dreams, and confidence in their ability to express them. Dona takes it a step further, with older troupers mentoring new cohorts and directing plays and workshops.

This summer, kids can join Dona at her Summer Pie Summer Workshops, coached by Middle and High School trouper-directors, under Rockport’s Unitarian Universalist Church’s accommodating steeple.  on Cleaves Street in Rockport.  Contact Dona at 978 546-2416 or donalambert1gmail.com for more information.

The Rockport Navy Weekend 2013 July 12th to July 15th

The Rockport Navy Committee (RocNavCom) and the town of Rockport will again be hosting The United States Naval Academy (USNA) Offshore Sail Training Squadron (OSTS). Five NA-44 foot sailboats will arrive in Rockport on Friday July 12th, 2013 and cast off Monday morning July 15th, 2013.

Sailors from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, the USS Constitution in Boston, Massachusetts and the Navy Band in Newport, Rhode Island have been invited to participate in the weekend events. The sailors/midshipmen will participate in various social and sporting events including a kickball game with Rockport children ages 6-16 on Saturday afternoon, a softball game against a Rockport Police/Fire team on Saturday evening and a benefit pancake breakfast at Brackett’s Ocean View Restaurant on Sunday morning. The public is welcome to attend the above events.

The RocNavCom is looking for Rockport residents to host the forty midshipmen and ten advisors during their visit. The midshipmen range in age from 18 to 23. The hosts will be responsible for room and board Friday, Saturday and Sunday, transportation to morning events and returning the midshipmen to T-wharf Sunday evening or Monday morning. Many of the activities the midshipmen will be participating in include meals. We are holding to the Navy standard of the buddy system; hosts must be able to accommodate at least two midshipmen or advisors.

Due the lack of available lodging for visiting active duty sailors, the Rockport Navy Committee is looking for Rockport residents willing to host sailors in their homes. We are holding to the Navy standard of the buddy system; hosts must be able to accommodate at least two sailors. The sailors only need lodging; no meals or transportation is required.

If you are interested in hosting midshipmen/advisors or sailors, or would like more information about the Rockport Navy Weekend please go to: www.rocnavcom.org
