What’s The Right Amount To Tip When You Get Takeout At A Sit Down Restaurant?

I’m always confounded at what I should leave for the person that takes my order when I place it over the phone at a sit down dinner place.

It’s not like they are waiting on you and serving you drinks.  they’re basically taking the order over the phone, bagging it up from the kitchen and giving you change.

You gotta leave something, right? But not 20%, right?  It’s always awkward.

How do you handle it?

Fiesta Wrap Up From Gloucester Ma Chief Of Police Leonard Campanello

Hi Joey,

Buona Fiesta!! I am so happy to have celebrated St. Peters Fiesta with the citizens of Gloucester and met so many of your readers and thank them for their wonderful comments and support of the Police Department.

Over all, I think we had wonderful cooperation from the vast majority of people at the Fiesta and the establishments in the City. We had a low number of arrests for the very specific reasons that I outlined before the Fiesta. We were not going to tolerate any one who decides to become a disruptive influence on an otherwise enjoyable and fun family event. And as I said, the overwhelming majority of people respected this. In fact, as of today, we had only 17 Fiesta related arrests and they were misdemeanors. My office has thus far received no reports of injuries as a result of the arrests and disruptive behavior and I credit the City’s police officers, as well as the great support we received from the Essex Sheriff’s Department and the Massachusetts State Police. I cannot thank the majority of Gloucester residents enough for their cooperation and respectfulness throughout Fiesta. I think it also important to thank the City Administration, especially Mayor Carolyn Kirk, who was present throughout the Fiesta and often checked in with me to ensure my first Fiesta had the support of the City. The support of Mayor Kirk had a lot to do with the safe and enjoyable atmosphere of this years’ Fiesta celebration.

Some of your readers may have a concern about the deployment of K9 ‘s and their handlers at closing times. I can tell you that I am evaluating that response with the input I have heard from my officers, establishment owners, and citizens I have heard of. I would also like to ask your reader to call me directly if they have a concern. There is perspective in every police matter, especially when managing a crowd of thousands across several establishments who may have been consuming alcohol, and sometimes those perspectives can differ. I’m happy to discuss any issues the community has in working toward making next year’s Fiesta even safer and more enjoyable for all.

Again, let me say how much I was honored to have been a part of this event. As the Police Chief, I believe it was very successful and a safe event. As a person, I enjoyed it immensely and look forward to next year. It’s one of the reasons that Gloucester is such a special community.

Respectfully,

Leonard Campanello

Chief of Police

Chickity Check It! New England Surf Company

PR Image

Over the past few years there has been a rise in surfing, and now stand up paddle (SUP)  in New England  and two local surfers, Collin Goodrow and David Stowell, co-founders of The New England Surf Company (NESC), saw it as a chance to create surf apparel and accessories exclusive to the New England coldwater surfing experience.  The co-founders, forever loyal to the unique surf community, culture, and local history, stay true to their maritime roots when creating NESC designs, like the popular Surf Co block print design.

Recently, NESC started a Brand Ambassador program to foster a love for New England surfing and other water sports.   They’ve recruited New England standouts in the surf and SUP surf categories as a way to connect with the community and promote surf protection-activism.

Another way NESC strives to make a local and meaningful impact is through their “Go Blue” initiative.

“GO BLUE” with the simply stated motto “Save Our Waves,” helps raise awareness and support other organizations that are making a positive difference in the local economy, communities, and environment.  NESC dedicates a portion of sale proceeds of the GO BLUE t-shirts and bracelets to organizations that work to save our oceans, beaches and waves.

NESC designs and products are being picked up, sold and displayed in more surf shops throughout New England every day including SURFARI SUP in Manchester-by-the-Sea, the Gloucester House General Store in Gloucester MA, Ocean House Surf Shop in Swampscott MA, or Cinnamon Rainbows located in Hampton NH, where you can find your next favorite NESC t-shirt, sweatshirt or beanie with ease.

If your local shop is sold out, no worries the NESC online store gives you immediate access to NESC products. NESC guarantees to keep you stoked and connected with America’s “original” north shore and the regions truly unique surfing experience. Check out the New England Surf Company today at www.newenglandsurfco.com  facebook and twitter and be sure to tell a friend! And if you’re interested in getting involved in representing the brand through our Amabassador program get in touch we’re always on the lookout for new team talent and help spread the stoke!

Annual fiesta beer pong tournament

Hi Joey my name is Tony and Ive followed gmg for a few years and think the site is great! I know your always interested in fun and obscure events so I think this one would be up your alley. For the past 6 years myself and a bunch of my friends have be playing on our 91cup vs 91 cup beer pong tourney for fiesta. It’s a blast and the amount of pong cups that are in the tables are absurd! 182 cups!

Anyway we usually do this on the Saturday of fiesta but since we are all in our early 30’s weddings children ect have caused us to change it to August 3rd this year. . I’ll send a few pictures of the event as well. Enjoy the rest of fiesta and keep up the kick ass work on the site.
Thanks,
Tony

Joey:

Can you post this with a notation that the first 100 runners receive a free tee shirt.

Thanks,

Thomas M. Lattof

Hi My Name Is Hulk

My name is Hulk and I am a year and half old Beagle Mix and I love to play. Recently my brother Champ was diagnosed with Degenerate Spinal Disease.

His injury is critical and now I cannot play with him. I use to be able to run and play and we had a good time. Now all I can do is lay next to him.

I need to find a home that either has another playful dog like myself or a family who can  walk me or run with me or bring me to the dog park.

I would like to keep my name, I think it fits me well. My Mom and Dad want to make sure I find a good home and will not let me go until we find the perfect fit.

After all I am the cutest dog you’ve ever seen!

If you are interested you can email my mom,

Thank you,

Mark Godfried Memorial Tag A Tiny™ Bluefin Tournament

This year’s Tag A Tiny Bluefin Tournament will be held in memory of our dear friend Mark Godfried. The purpose of the tournament is to promote tagging research, raise funds for the Large Pelagic Research Center, and have an all around fun time! This year the tournament will take place from July 10-14. Everyone is welcome to join!

image

The Large Pelagics Research Center (LPRC), under the direction of Dr. Molly Lutcavage, is a premiere research program, focused on tunas and billfish.  Based at the UMass Marine Station, Gloucester, MA, LPRC, with its tagging program, has helped identify migration routes, growth patterns, and potential spawning areas of Bluefin tuna. The tournament raises research funds to support the LPRC’s scientific investigations. Mark Godfried was a great friend and supporter of the Large Pelagics Research Center’s Bluefin research. His knowledge and passion for the species was only exceeded by his dedication to the Gloucester fishing industry. The 2013 tournament has been renamed the ‘Mark Godfried Memorial Tag A Tiny™ Bluefin Tournament’ to honor Mark’s lifetime of work.

Mark and the LPRC, aided by local fishermen, initiated the ‘Tag A Tiny™’ juvenile tagging program in 2006. Since then, over 1,258 anglers and captains have joined the Tag A Tiny™ effort, releasing over 1,645 juvenile Bluefin with conventional spaghetti tags.  So far, anglers have recovered and returned over 38 conventional and archival data tags.

In 2008, Mark Godfried was instrumental in establishing the inaugural Tag A Tiny™ Bluefin Tournament.  This tournament is unusual in that it follows a ‘tag and release’ methodology only, i.e., ‘no-kill’.  Participants are rewarded with a unique trophy for the greatest number of fish tagged, rather than cash prizes.

Our goal is to have 50+ boats tagging fish during the four-day tournament. This non-profit event is financed through cash donations so that 100% of the tournament entry fee can be donated to The Large Pelagics Research Center. For more information on the LPRC’s research, visit http://www.tunalab.org.

To learn more about the tournament visit: www.tagatinybluefintournament.com or contact us at tagatiny@gmail.com.
