The Stevedore
Hello, Joey:
I hope you’ll share this YouTube link to my new original song, “The Stevedore.” It’s a sea chantey with a twist of contemporary realism: rather than the typical sea song that features drunken sailors, this one is about a stevedore (or lumper or longshoreman) who develops an addiction to painkillers. It’s a tribute to the very tough people who have made a living unloading the cargo from fishing boats and, I hope, a way of honoring Gloucester’s recovery community. I hope the song touches a chord with your readers.
The song is performed by The Dorymates (Janet Ruth Young and Tony Hilliard) with our friend Tim Perkins. It was recorded by H. Nat Stevens.
Best wishes,
Janet Ruth Young

Missing In Magnolia July 25, 2013
Hi Joey,
My husband and I have been residents of Magnolia for the past couple of years. We read your blog everyday and love everything about Gloucester and Cape Ann. Our neighbor, Terry Weber, did a post in the blog while relaxing in our pretty garden the first year we were here. This is our piece of heaven. We have felt very safe in our neighborhood. Sadly, I writing to express my disappointment. Someone stole a hand painted wooden sign that hung next to our front door. I bought it from an artist at a craft fair in Manchester soon after we moved here. I am attaching a picture. If any of your readers happen to notice someone with a new Cape Ann sign in or our of their home, I would hope that someone might contact you at your blog. This is not a piece of art that would have been purchased locally. We would love to have our sign back.

Follow Up to “Missing in Magnolia”
Earlier this summer I wrote to you with a heavy heart as I expressed my dismay at having a lovely Cape Ann fish sign stolen from our home in Magnolia. Sadly it was never returned to us.
A couple of weeks ago I returned home to find a beautiful copper dory placed on a bench in our front yard. Neither my husband, nor I knew where it came from but admired the beautiful craftsmanship. We asked several neighbors about the dory, but no one knew anything about it.
A couple days later my husband and I were walking along Shore Rd. in Magnolia and came upon a local man in his truck pulled up on the side of the road. We didn’t know his name but we see him on our daily walks, enjoying his coffee and newspaper at Magnolia Beach. As we approached he called out, “That’s for plants.” Upon realizing that he was the creator of this beautiful dory, we introduced ourselves. His name is James (Jim) Fialto. He’s a coppersmith. Apparently he had just heard that we lost our sign, and had some free time on a Sunday afternoon waiting for the Patriots game to begin. When asked why he made us the dory, he said, “I felt bad about your sign being stolen and I see you picking up trash every day on your walk…”
We shared this story with many people and all agree what a lovely gesture this was. Residents of Magnolia acknowledge the kindness of Jim and agree that we live in a very special place.
Sincerely,
Lynn and Bob Bird

Huge Kudos To The Team That Produced The Rockport Harvest Festival
That town was jumpin!
Great job all the way around! Took the trolley from the Rockport Transfer station- less than 5 minutes of a ride on the cool trolley with a super friendly attendant and driver- total no brainer rather than driving in circles in downtown Rockport trying to find a spot to park.
Thanks for the time and energy you put in to make such a fantastic day- we really appreciated it.
and for anyone that missed it- you really ought to pencil it into your calendar for next year- It’s a must-do event.

NOTICE TO OUR WATER CUSTOMERS- OCTOBER 18, 2013
WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM MAINTENANCE
Gloucester DPW will begin filling the Plum Cove Water Storage Tank in Lanesville midday Wednesday October 23, 2013, then sample it for water quality, and bring the tank into service the following week. During the tank filling Lanesville and Annisquam residents may temporarily experience pressure fluctuations and discolored water. The DPW is currently having the Blackburn Water Tank painted and anticipates bring that tank back into service in early November.
The DPW switched the distribution system disinfectant from chloramine to chlorine on October 7, 2013, when the West Gloucester Water Treatment Plant was brought into operation. Customers may notice a slight chlorine odor. The switch was made to aid in bringing these water storage tanks back into operation most effectively. The DPW anticipates switching the distribution system disinfectant back from chlorine to chloramines in November 2013 after the Blackburn Tank painting, filling, and sampling.
Also the DPW is currently approximately half way through routine fall water distribution piping flushing program fully across the entire city. Flushing may cause a change in the direction of flow in some water mains and may cause temporary discoloration of the water as iron particles in the pipe are stirred up. If you should experience “rusty” water, running a cold water tap for a few minutes will clear your line. We also recommend that you avoid the use of chlorine bleach during this time period to prevent staining of laundry if you are experiencing “rusty” water.
If you experience persistent water quality problems, please contact the DPW at 978-281-9785 or the Office of Water Compliance at 978-281-9792, so that selective flushing can be targeted to problem areas.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Samuel Johnson Quote of The Week from Greg Bover
18 October, 2013
“Kindness is always in our power, even when fondness is not.”
Samuel Johnson (1709-1784)
Dr. Johnson was the most important English literary figure of his age. He wrote plays, essays and poems including the perceptive “Vanity of Human Wishes,” but he was best known for his Dictionary of the English Language (1755), an almost incomprehensible feat of mainly solo scholarship, written in just nine years, and the first to feature examples, largely from Shakespeare, Dryden, and Milton, of the 114,000 words in a literary context. Johnson was also the subject of one of the most famous biographies ever written, the minutely detailed Life of Samuel Johnson, by James Boswell. It is from this biography and other descriptions of the tics and outbursts of the good Doctor that it is now thought that he suffered from Tourette’s syndrome, a condition not yet defined in his time. Johnson is also credited with the observation that “Patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels.”

Hey Joey how are ya? Was wondering if you could advertise for us, Bailee is having another event next saturday Oct 26th, she will be selling Hot Apple Cider to raise money to buy toys, coloring books, crayons and stickers to bring up to Beverly Hospital to the pediatric ward, Bailee was hospitalized in the end of August, and was not allowed in the toy room because they were not sure if she was contagious, so all they really had was a old coloring book that was filled, and a baby wipe box full of broken crayons, Bailee was inspired to do this event so that throughout this flu season kids that are on precautions and arent allowed in the toy room will have the opportunity to get their own “prize” a toy, coloring book, etc, we are just asking for no stuffed animals….

Hey Joey,
This is Stefanie over at Alchemy. We have an event coming up on the 29th of October called the Pumpkin Challenge. It is a competition between 2 chefs ( our chef Scott Jensen) and Stacy Cogswell from the Regal Beagle in Brookline using a pumpkin as the main ingredient in each dish. We are also doing a pumpkin carving challenge as well among the guests to see who can carve the best pumpkin. First prize is $100 and second prize is $50. For each pumpkin that is entered into the contest, $5 will be donated to the Open Door Foundation.
I was wondering if you could post something about the event on Good Morning Gloucester.
Photos from Committee for the Arts Trails and Sails and Block Party
Hi Joey,
During two Trails and Sails weekends and the last Block Party, the Committee for the Arts (CFTA ) was pleased to participate and spread awareness about municipal art. One event: during the block party we were at Main and Parsons, near a very busy Markouk booth (always busy at Cape Ann Farmers Market, too), fried dough and candy truck (not just kids buying!), Dress Code’s charmingly illuminated booth, and Joe Ciolino’s. What a gorgeous night! We spoke with dozens of folks including the group of twenty youth from Ocean Classroom en route from Maine to Puerto Rico with a stop in Gloucester and a night out downtown. Parsons Street public art mural by James Owen Calderwood.
Send us your photos and we’ll add them in! gloucestercfta@gmail.com
