Thi Linh Wernau’s "You Are Beautiful" Exhibit Review from James Eves

Hi Joey,

Anna and I went to Thi Linh Wernau’s “You Are Beautiful” exhibit at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center this afternoon. On the way over, my mind was wandering with work stuff and other concerns. However, from the moment I stepped into Thi Linh’s world  I was moved by beauty in people, all people. Her art has a profound affect on any who experience it. Walking into the Cultural Center I was impressed by her overall presentation. She has such attention to all details of her work. Like the other patrons in the gallery I took my time with each piece of art. Marveling at the beauty in her photography and the statements of her subjects. I am impressed that many of the people Thi photographed were strangers to her at first and how much they gave of themselves. She has a way of creating intimacy immediately.

This weekend she is inviting visitors to participate in her “You Are Beautiful Polaroid Project”. We found Thi downstairs where she’s set up a photo studio. Anna and I decided to participate in her project. Thi had us make our own “You Are Beautiful” sign and write a statement of why we are beautiful. Coming up with the statement was harder than you might think. Thi takes two polaroids of each person; one she keeps for her project and the other she presents to the participant in a beautiful black box. I  was thrilled by the experience of participating in her art.

I am looking forward to going back in the coming weeks for the other events she has planned.

Be sure to give the Cape Ann Museum a call.
When I cleaned out my dad’s basement in East Gloucester this summer, I
came across tons of Gloucester memorabilia from the 1960’s, 70’s and
80’s.
..old programs from the Cape Ann Symphony when it used to play at the
Fuller School…
…theater programs from the Gloucester Stage Company when it staged
its plays at the BlackburnTavern…
…GHS graduation programs…
…Gloucester postcards from the 1950’s…
…announcements from the Rockport Art Association containing min bios
of members from the 1940’s…
All sorts of stuff, valuable and not, ephemeral and permanent, that
captured eras of not-recent Gloucester history.
Anyhow, I stuffed all of the paper and books and Gloucester
knickknacks into a box, and the archivist from the museum came over to
pick through it. She took a lot  for the museum archives, sent a deed
of gift later in the mail, and mentioned that she wished more
Gloucester residents would call the museum come time to clean  out
their parent’s homes.

Hi Joey,  The Cape Ann DAR would appreciate if you would  include this notice in your Community Announcements of your webpage we would greatly appreciate it.

    On November 2, 2013, The Cape Ann DAR will present a program, ” Remembering and Thanking Our Troops”. The meeting will be held in the Friend Room of the Sawyer Free Library in Gloucester, MA. at 11:00 A.M. Richard Barbarto , Director of Veterans Services in Gloucester, will be the speaker and will give us an update on the services offered to the returning forces. He will tell us of programs that individual and groups can do to support our troops. The DAR is asking that you bring a new pair of white SOCKS for a man or woman as an entry fee. Please join the children, their families and staff of Eastern Point Day School for an art exhibit and supporting production of Musicians in the Sun. Admission is free and open to the public. Donations are appreciated.

Patricia Reed, EPDS Art Specialist, and Matthew Recine, Upper School Teacher and Performance Director have been working with students and teachers throughout the fall as they apply their knowledge and skills to expressing and studying the Aztec culture. The result is a wonderful exhibit and production that will be both educational and entertaining.

As described by Mr. Recine, “Musicians of the Sun is based on an ancient Aztec folktale of the same name detailing the birth of color into the world.  It’s a story of heart, life, love, and music – about color and the absence of it.  It’s about song and the joy it can bring to people.” 

Please join us on November 25th for Musicians of the Sun at the Gloucester Stage Company.

Rilke is regarded by many as the most significant poet in the German language. Born in Prague, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Rilke was sent to military school, but rebelled and studied the humanities at university. He became the protégé, and some say lover, of Lou Andreas-Salome, an older intellectual woman, and traveled extensively with her. He settled in Paris after the turn of the century, writing much of his best work there, including his Requiem poems.  He later lived in Trieste and then Zurich where he continued to examine the nature of life and death. In 1922 he finished his best known work, the Duino Elegies. He died of leukemia at 51 in Switzerland.  His slim volume Letters to a Young Poet, published posthumously, contains advice and encouragement to those who seek fulfillment in an artistic life. I highly recommend it.

Bigtime Tennis Legend Visits Small-town Manchester by-the-Sea

MAC tennis players and coaches train hard, build confidence, win championships and, on occasion, spend the weekend with a sports legend. Now through Sunday, October 27, junior and adult tennis players will have the chance to take private and group lessons with Nick Bollettieri, arguably the most famous tennis coach in history. MAC Tennis Academy Days will be conducted on Saturday from 2-5pm and Sunday from 9am-12pm for juniors in the prestigious academy program designed specifically by Bollettieri for the MAC, leading to remarkable success for the program and its players.

Bollettieri is the legendary tennis coach linked to 10 number-one world-ranked players including Andre Agassi, Maria Sharapova, Boris Becker, Jim Courier, Martina Hingis, Jelena Jankovic, Marcelo Rios, Monica Seles, and Venus and Serena Williams. One of the sport’s most well-respected and influential tennis experts, Bollettieri will impart his considerable wisdom as he visits with hundreds of players during his weekend visit to Manchester Athletic Club, including

Go Ahead Click The Google Search Button.  Please.  I know you have it in you.  I just know it can’t be that difficult to grasp that there is thing on the interwebs called Google that actually allows you to find things that may be posted about a certain subject you may be interested in.

If you have a thing against the word “Google” and it sends shivers up your spine perhaps you could try Bing.

The League of Women Voters of Cape Ann conducted a televised debate between the two mayoral candidates.   This will be  broadcast on CATV:

    Wednesday, October 23, 9:30 pm

    Friday, October 25, 1:00 am

    Saturday, October 26, 8:00 pm

The League also contacted the candidates for School Committee and City Council requesting that they participate in a website forum.  The candidates responses to several questions can be found on the League website at www.lwvcapeann.org.   All Voting Information will be posted on this site.  

October 29th at Lanesville Community Center will be a debate for council/school committee/mayor from 7:00 to 9:00 pm

November 5th – Gloucester city elections

Veterans of Cape Ann

Hi Everyone!

We have a pretty exciting event happening at Local Colors from 6-8 on November 2nd including light refreshments. Several members got together and created art in the Mexican tradition (updated with a New England flair) for this holiday.  It is believed departed ones come back to visit their loved ones on the 2nd of November. The family often prepares for the visit with their favorite food, drink, flowers, brightly decorated sugar skulls and a special altar with photos and fond memories. We have created a humorous display at the Local Colors Artists’ Cooperative, 121 Main Street in Gloucester to celebrate art and those who have been our inspiration. Feel free to write your own dedication on our public altar. The exhibit is going on now through November 8th with a reception that is open and free to the public on November 2, from 6 to 8 pm.  Please come and join us!

2013 GHS Field Hockey Kudos From John Nasser

Hello Joey,

I just thought that the 2013 GHS Field Hockey team should get a little recognition for qualifying for the State Tournament this season following a 3-1 victory over Peabody this past Monday night.

These girls worked their tails off this year.

Right now their record stands at 8-6-1 which puts them in 4th place in their division. They have one more game to play before the tournament begins.

I believe it’s been six years since they last qualified.

The team is led by head coach Lauren Riley and assisted by her Dad, Don Riley.

Fall Park Cleanup
October 26 @ 8am!

Dog parks do need maintenance! This fall we plan to add a few yards of gravel, move larger rocks, fill in holes, install some gravel guards at the entrance, and generally spiff the place up!
We need your help. And if you have the following tools bring them along: garden and leaf rakes, hand garden tools, a weed eater, wheel barrows and shovels. Don’t forget your work gloves!

A collection of paintings by local artist William Beal will be on sale at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Rockport, 4 Cleaves Street, Rockport, on Saturday, October 26 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Born and brought up in New York City, and  after a long career at WABC-TV in NYC, Beal retired to Rockport. Pursuing his love of art, he became an artist member  of both the Rockport and North Shore Art Associations. A portion of the proceeds from the sale will benefit the UUSR.
Light refreshments will be served.

The long awaited sequel to Ann’s Eyes: The Twins of Thacher Island by local author, Barry Stacks, is ready for your reading pleasure.  Ann’s Eyes II: Double Vision picks up exactly where the first book ended on September 11, 2001.  Of course, as he always does, the story takes place in the author’s hometown of Gloucester, Mass.  This is Barry’s tenth book with Publish America.  This prolific author has  regaled his readers with fanciful tales of vampires, haunted houses, his childhood pool hall hang-out and a new imaginary sleuth.

     The two books in the Ann’s Eyes series address a question that has long nagged the author: would it be possible to write a book about historical events using fictional characters?  That question was answered in the pages of Ann’s Eyes: The Twins of Thacher Island.  That book begins on November 22, 1963 and ends on September 11, 2001.  Double Vision begins on 9-11-2001 and delivers the reader through to a horrific ending.  Once again your author takes the reader through twists and turns that have become part of our collective history.

     Please check the author’s website, gloucesterlostboy.com, for news about two other books that are still in the developmental stages.  Barry’s books are edited by long-time Cape Ann resident, Paige Kippen Holmes.  She is currently editing the sequel to Tucker Norman (pronounced Tuckah Nawmin), while Barry is writing a third book about Tucker and his serious but comical friends.  Look for the second book in the Tucker Norman series in February, 2014.
