Hi Joey,
On a recent visit to the railways, I snapped this shot of a Schooner Roseway crewmember who seemed to be right at home as he sat atop one of the masts.
Enjoy!

Huge Kudos To The Team That Produced The Rockport Harvest Festival
That town was jumpin!
Great job all the way around! Took the trolley from the Rockport Transfer station- less than 5 minutes of a ride on the cool trolley with a super friendly attendant and driver- total no brainer rather than driving in circles in downtown Rockport trying to find a spot to park.
Thanks for the time and energy you put in to make such a fantastic day- we really appreciated it.
and for anyone that missed it- you really ought to pencil it into your calendar for next year- It’s a must-do event.

NOTICE TO OUR WATER CUSTOMERS- OCTOBER 18, 2013
WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM MAINTENANCE
Gloucester DPW will begin filling the Plum Cove Water Storage Tank in Lanesville midday Wednesday October 23, 2013, then sample it for water quality, and bring the tank into service the following week. During the tank filling Lanesville and Annisquam residents may temporarily experience pressure fluctuations and discolored water. The DPW is currently having the Blackburn Water Tank painted and anticipates bring that tank back into service in early November.
The DPW switched the distribution system disinfectant from chloramine to chlorine on October 7, 2013, when the West Gloucester Water Treatment Plant was brought into operation. Customers may notice a slight chlorine odor. The switch was made to aid in bringing these water storage tanks back into operation most effectively. The DPW anticipates switching the distribution system disinfectant back from chlorine to chloramines in November 2013 after the Blackburn Tank painting, filling, and sampling.
Also the DPW is currently approximately half way through routine fall water distribution piping flushing program fully across the entire city. Flushing may cause a change in the direction of flow in some water mains and may cause temporary discoloration of the water as iron particles in the pipe are stirred up. If you should experience “rusty” water, running a cold water tap for a few minutes will clear your line. We also recommend that you avoid the use of chlorine bleach during this time period to prevent staining of laundry if you are experiencing “rusty” water.
If you experience persistent water quality problems, please contact the DPW at 978-281-9785 or the Office of Water Compliance at 978-281-9792, so that selective flushing can be targeted to problem areas.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Samuel Johnson Quote of The Week from Greg Bover
18 October, 2013
“Kindness is always in our power, even when fondness is not.”
Samuel Johnson (1709-1784)
Dr. Johnson was the most important English literary figure of his age. He wrote plays, essays and poems including the perceptive “Vanity of Human Wishes,” but he was best known for his Dictionary of the English Language (1755), an almost incomprehensible feat of mainly solo scholarship, written in just nine years, and the first to feature examples, largely from Shakespeare, Dryden, and Milton, of the 114,000 words in a literary context. Johnson was also the subject of one of the most famous biographies ever written, the minutely detailed Life of Samuel Johnson, by James Boswell. It is from this biography and other descriptions of the tics and outbursts of the good Doctor that it is now thought that he suffered from Tourette’s syndrome, a condition not yet defined in his time. Johnson is also credited with the observation that “Patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels.”

Hi Joey-
Yesterday, when we returned from our morning row, we saw two (very nice) workers who are in the process of inspecting the integrity of the docks in our Harbor.
Looking up, we also saw our (always nice) Harbormaster, Jim Caulkett.
Smiles all around-a great way to start the day!

Hey Joey how are ya? Was wondering if you could advertise for us, Bailee is having another event next saturday Oct 26th, she will be selling Hot Apple Cider to raise money to buy toys, coloring books, crayons and stickers to bring up to Beverly Hospital to the pediatric ward, Bailee was hospitalized in the end of August, and was not allowed in the toy room because they were not sure if she was contagious, so all they really had was a old coloring book that was filled, and a baby wipe box full of broken crayons, Bailee was inspired to do this event so that throughout this flu season kids that are on precautions and arent allowed in the toy room will have the opportunity to get their own “prize” a toy, coloring book, etc, we are just asking for no stuffed animals….

Hey Joey,
This is Stefanie over at Alchemy. We have an event coming up on the 29th of October called the Pumpkin Challenge. It is a competition between 2 chefs ( our chef Scott Jensen) and Stacy Cogswell from the Regal Beagle in Brookline using a pumpkin as the main ingredient in each dish. We are also doing a pumpkin carving challenge as well among the guests to see who can carve the best pumpkin. First prize is $100 and second prize is $50. For each pumpkin that is entered into the contest, $5 will be donated to the Open Door Foundation.
I was wondering if you could post something about the event on Good Morning Gloucester.
Photos from Committee for the Arts Trails and Sails and Block Party
Hi Joey,
During two Trails and Sails weekends and the last Block Party, the Committee for the Arts (CFTA ) was pleased to participate and spread awareness about municipal art. One event: during the block party we were at Main and Parsons, near a very busy Markouk booth (always busy at Cape Ann Farmers Market, too), fried dough and candy truck (not just kids buying!), Dress Code’s charmingly illuminated booth, and Joe Ciolino’s. What a gorgeous night! We spoke with dozens of folks including the group of twenty youth from Ocean Classroom en route from Maine to Puerto Rico with a stop in Gloucester and a night out downtown. Send us your photos and we’ll add them in! gloucestercfta@gmail.com

Please join us for a day of sunshine, fresh air, friends, family, food and a celebration dedicated to all we love to fight and to raise money to help The American Cancer Society through the Relay For Life and Family Ties, Inc.; to help individuals and families financially; and to find cures to end cancer. We are hosting an all-day event of golf, food, awards, silent and live auctions for all to enjoy with the proceeds going to our foundation and to Relay For Life fundraising efforts.
Family Ties, Inc. is a Massachusetts Non-Profit Corporation that was established to help families affected by cancer. Family Ties, Inc. works with Relay for Life which is a 501(c)(3) company to help as many as we can in the fight against cancer. In 1985, Charles “Chucky” Pratt was diagnosed with cancer as a 17 year old high school student. Chucky lost his battle with cancer after four years and missed out on so many of life’s wonderful moments. Family Ties was a Relay for Life team created by Erin “Pratt” Avila to honor her brother and to bring her family together, celebrate him and fight for those who need our help.
Over the past 8 years our family has raised over $100,000.00 as a part of the Relay for Life in Cape Ann, we have won several awards as a team due to our fundraising efforts and have led the fund raising event as top fundraisers. We have now turned this team into a foundation as our passion is to raise money to help families who are battling cancer and to help invest in cures supporting The American Cancer Society through the Cape Ann Relay For life. Join us with your family and friends to help us in the fight against cancer.
The following explains all of your options in how to help and be a part of this amazing day:

Harbortown Cultural District Update From Cat Ryan
Cat Ryan submits-
Harbortown Cultural District will be included in an upcoming AAA publication featuring 10 cultural districts! Also look for some breaking tech news. Our Harbortown cultural district joined forces with the 3 other Cape Ann Cultural Districts (Harbortown, Rocky Neck, Rockport and Essex) to apply for a Massachusetts Cultural Council grant to help us towards some exciting shared marketing. We found out that YES we were awarded a grant, and are looking forward to creating a new mobile APP.
We’re also crossing our fingers this week, waiting to see if an amendment to the state’s supplemental budget happens or not. The MCC is asking for an amendment that will include $500,000 to market the state’s cultural districts through advertising on commuter rail lines, the subway and on busses in the Boston area.
GMG contributor and the ever affable Main Street proprietor Fred Bodin is one of our many talented founding partners. During our August event at the Cape Ann Museum, he multi-tasked. The good photos from the event are his! Visit http://www.gloucesterharbortown.org
Cape Ann Museum Director, Ronda Faloon, outlined the museum’s impressive next steps and guided us on a mini tour. Cape Ann TV –also a founding partner—was filming. The Fresnel lens is gorgeous! I can’t wait to see it in its new location when the museum re-opens. Look at the scale of this thing (see photo with Bob Whitmarsh, Co-Chair, to get an idea of size—)!
We followed up with a discussion of our district goals led by Bex Borden.
We are so grateful to Cape Ann Museum for hosting and the lovely appetizer spread and beverages. They also set up and readied for our visit and meeting. Harbortown founding partner, Lise Breen, and other members also helped set and clean up for this double billing. What a spot to have it. Check out the large Gordon Goetemann oil on canvas From a High Place Nice!
