Delmore Schwartz Quote of the Week from Greg Bover

“Existentialism means that no one else can take a bath for you.”

Delmore Schwartz 1913-1966

image

Born to Jewish parents in Brooklyn, NY, Schwartz attended Columbia and the University of Wisconsin before receiving a degree from New York University. He studied philosophy as a graduate student under the great Alfred North Whitehead at Harvard while he roomed with the poet Robert Lowell. His first book, In Dreams Responsibilities Begin, based on his parents failed marriage, gained him widespread notice. He went on to teach writing at a number of schools including Syracuse and Kenyon. Among his many students and protégés was Saul Bellow, whose Humboldt’s Gift is based on their relationship. Lou Reed of the Velvet Underground also studied with Schwartz, wrote at least two songs in his memory and named him the “first great man I ever met.” Schwartz died at 52, alone and isolated from the world, from complications of alcoholism and mental illness.

ARTIST LOREN DOUCETTE LIFTS STUDENT ART INTO PUBLIC ART INSTALLATIONEETING #2

East Gloucester Elementary School and ART

Hey Joey,

image002 (7)

What happens when artist Loren Doucette exhibits art projects by the entire East Gloucester Elementary student body over two back-to-back family nights?

image004 (4)

She lifts it to the level of public art installation. (Ruby McElhenny’s mask J)

image006 (2)

That’s Loren’s mom, Diane, helping out.

image008

Thanks to hundreds of display cases –big shout out for the shoe boxes from Mark Adrian Shoes—and a beckoning zippy maze we were treated to a walk in field of masks.

image011 (2)

The PTO worked with East Gloucester Elementary to bring Loren and artist Amber LeBlanc (look for her teaching art this summer at YMCA Camp Spindrift) to spend an entire day with each grade. Devoted entirely to art and only art!

Loren’s most recent work—the view from Kate’s balcony– will be on exhibit opening this weekend atFlat Rocks Gallery.

Esteemed artist, Ed Touchette, is the art teacher year round for East Gloucester Elementary school and Veteran’s. So these students have a touch with a master class every week! And Mary Rhinelanderdesigned the school logo.

Special thanks to EGS PTO for such a memorable event.

Last Summer at Art Haven Summer Programs:

Miss us last summer?

Last year’s nine weeks of summer programs were a huge success.
Our “Summer Passport Program” allowed students to explore the cultures of Mexico, Italy, Kenya, Greece, France, Tahiti, and China, and our partnership with Maritime Gloucester got them learning about culture a little closer to home.
Over the course of the summer we worked with 64 kids, and were able to provide scholarship money for 27 of them – that’s 42%!
We are grateful to our students, their families, and the generous donors who make our programs possible.
Looking forward to summer 2014!

Take advantage of the fun and creative space that Art Haven creates each summer for kids entering grades 1-5!

Our programs run from 9-1 and promote creativity and confidence through hands on learning and collaboration with talented local artists and fun, energetic summer staff.

Your kids can enjoy a reasonably priced summer program that gives flexibility through weekly sign ups. A healthy lunch is provided daily by The Open Door and Project Bread. Take advantage of our flexible pick up time from 1 pm-3 pm while your kids further explore their talents with the skills they learned earlier in the day!

Our summer staff will ensure that each moment is special and that new friendships are made so your child will have a summer adventure they will never forget!

FISH TALES”: A FUN, NEW EXHIBIT HONORING CAPE ANN
The Local Colors Artists’ Cooperative, now in its 25th year on Main St , celebrates its annual FISH event from June 1 to July 4th with a special art exhibit titled FISH TALES. This annual event, which also coincides with St. Peter’s Fiesta, celebrates the fishing community and natural beauty of Cape Ann . The highlight of this celebration is a reception at Local Colors, 121 Main St. in Gloucester on Saturday, June 21st from 6 – 9 pm with refreshments that is open and free to the public.

This year’s theme FISH TALES captures a broad view of our fishing community and Cape Ann ‘s natural and manmade resources. Each of the 18 artists is free to interpret the theme according to their artistic calling. For special events as this, the artists are encouraged to create works outside their usual media to allow for growth and expansion of their creative talents. All the work for this event is displayed on the featured wall and in the front windows of Local Colors.

The current hours are 10am to 6pm, Sunday through Thursday and 10am to 8pm on Friday and Saturday. The members will be identified with name tags and look forward to meeting the public at the June 21st reception, but the exhibit can be viewed beginning June 1 through July 4.

Windhover announces its Summer Dance Performances
Featuring Forty Steps Dance and Sarah Slifer Swift
at Windhover Performing Arts Center, 257 rear Granite St., Rockport, MA
Friday, July 18–Sunday,July 20, 2014 at 8:00 P.M.

Tickets: Adults, $20; Students and seniors, $18 ; children under 10 free

Forty Steps Dance will be performing two works, both choreographed by artistic director Sallee Slagle. “Creatures” was created in 2014 and is based on the movements of the variety of creatures around us and our affinity to the natural world.  “Accord” is a crowd-pleasing work created in 1992 and was recently performed in Nahant for the company’s 20th anniversary.

Sarah Slifer Swift will present two recent works. “Insenser” (2014 premiere), named after an NSA surveillance system, takes on the human response to watching, being watched and becoming data.  “Invisible Stories” (2013) is a collaboration between Swift and Vermont-based writer and choreographer, Kate Morgan, based on the idea that “the book,” open or closed, occupies the landscapes in which we live.

As part of the “Invisible Stories” performance, an installation in one of the Windhover buildings will be on display at the start of each evening.
