Master Plan for our Meadow and Pond

JOHN SPARKS (1941-2014)

We will miss John Sparks….

ROCKPORT TOWN WEBSITE

Join our Conservancy!

Generation after generation, our Millbrook Meadow and Pond have given this community respite and solace from the effects of hectic life …

Now it is our generation’s turn to give respite and renewed life to the meadow …

We have formed the Rockport Millbrook Meadow Conservancy to support restoration goals, and to give the Meadow and the Mill Pond new life to last another century. Please join us to preserve, protect and give life to this town’s treasure!

Master Plan takes shape. Our contractor will soon begin developing plans for actual construction of the long-awaited Restoration of Meadow and Pond.

The conceptual plan above shows the Pond, at left, with proposed boardwalk in white.  Meadow is at right.

Plan calls for dredging tons of sediment from Mill Pond, rebuilding the watercourse for the Mill Brook so that it winds more and is widened to prevent flooding.

The path through the Meadow will begin at Beach St. (far right) with small entrance plaza.  There’ll be rain gardens near path to capture water runoff.

The old, dying willows will be replaced with new willows and other native plant species.

Rabbit Invasion From Jeanne Blake

Hi Joey,

Rabbits are eating the bark off my trees — the trees in the picture are autumn olive trees. They’re also eating the bark off my crabapple trees – and others.

Last summer when rabbits ate many of my plants, a professional landscaper tried a ton of solutions. I sprinkled moth balls, coyote urine, etc. Nothing worked. Now, it appears that rabbits are living under my deck, which means I’ll have even more this spring.

This afternoon I sprinkled “Shake Away” Fox Urine Granules under the trees. I’m not optimistic…

I know that a lot of people are struggling with the rabbit invasion this winter. Perhaps one of your readers will have a suggestion.

Thanks.

GMG Tech Talk- For Those Of You Who Bought A Chromecast- You’ve Got a free Movie Rental Coming To You

Also you should periodically check the Chromecast offer link here- Chromecast Offers, I’ve redeemed a bunch of stuff for free over the past 6 months. Bookmark that Chromecast Offers link, and check it often, it’s always got more free rewards it seems, every time I click on it.

I think the $35 Chromecast is an absolute steal and no brainer.  95% of my TV viewing for the past year has been Netflix ($9 a month) or Hulu Plus ($9 a month) through the Chromecast dongle.  Much like UBER is revolutionizing the local transportation game, Chromecast and streaming TV is revolutionizing TV viewing.  Chromecast is an absolute monster in what it can do for such little money.

Loves me some Chromecast.  if you don’t have one you can get one on Amazon right now for $32.11 here

So I thought I’d pass on this offer I read about this morning on Google+-

These are the current offers this morning-

image

I’ve redeemed the latest free movie rental and the Valentine’s  Day movie rental WITH a $6 Google Play credit.  So the Chromecast I paid $35 for actually after credits is almost free and the offers show up ALL the time.

Such a NO-Brainer.

source: Engadget

Google isn’t just using Chromecast Offers to reward existing users, the company’s also loading it with freebies in an effort to more households to get one. For instance, if you buy a Chromecast from March 20th to April 19th, you’ll get $80 worth of rewards. Namely, three months of subscription to Play Music, one month of Qello Concerts, three months of DramaFever, three months of Sesame Street GO and a free movie rental from Play Movies. While Google has reportedly sold over 10 million streaming sticks last year, having more users means getting more leverage when negotiating with content providers. That, in turn, could lead to bigger rewards or exclusive deals similar to Apple TV’s HBO Now offering.

North Shore Artist’s Work on Display at First Ipswich Bank’s Gloucester Branch

Gloucester, Mass., March 18, 2015 – First Ipswich Bank is pleased to announce that work by local artist, Jim Clyde, is on display at its Gloucester branch – 207 Main Street – through April.

Jim is a 25-year resident of Essex and has been painting under the tutelage of Gloucester’s David Curtis. He grew up in Hamilton, graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, attended Middlebury College, and graduated from Suffolk University. All of his works are done outdoors, or “en plein air,” and usually in one session, or “alla prima.” He hopes you will stop by to enjoy the paintings and to see if you can spot the telltale signs of his en plein air work … perhaps bugs in the paint?

“We are surrounded by an enormous wealth of talent in Gloucester, as well as the entire North Shore area, and we are fortunate that we can highlight, at least a small bit of it, at our Gloucester branch,” commented Bank President, Russ Cole.

A reception is planned at the branch on Friday, April 3 from 1:00-4:00PM to offer you the opportunity to meet Jim and learn more about his work.

About the program:

One artist’s work will be shown every three months; the first installation featured Katherine “Kim” Thayer’s work and Jim’s work will be on display through April. A new artist will then be featured from May-July 2015.

It was in August of 2013 while in the midst of a 5-year anniversary celebration trip to Cape Ann that David Arsenault and his wife, Sue Koehler-Arsenault, first walked into Scott Tubby Fine Art at 26 Bearskin Neck in Rockport. Listening to Scott, both David and Sue imagined new possibilities for themselves. Might Rockport someday be the right place to follow their dream of opening a gallery?
“Someday” arrived sooner than either one of them could possibly have believed. In May of 2014, David was “right-sized”—laid off— from his senior art director position with one of the largest educational publishers in the world. Suddenly, new choices and new opportunities were on the table, and the couple decided that now was the time. They marketed and sold their home and packed their belongings, all while Sue underwent knee surgery and David
reassembled his studio to film a PBS segment for the local affiliate. They finally headed to Rockport in November. Once there, all that remained was to find a gallery space; in February, the wildest month of the winter, they did: incredibly, the very same 26 Bearskin Neck! (Scott Tubby moved to 11 Main Street in town).
“One thing led to another, and before we knew it, we wanted to do it, and HAD to do it,” said David. “At this stage of our lives, we’re ready to create a great adventure together, doing what we love in a place that we love. And this is it. The fact that it will happen in the exact same space where our dreams took shape is almost too good to be true. But it fits perfectly!”
Arsenault has been an oil painter for 20 years. The Wall Street Journal once recognized his style for its similarity to Edward Hopper’s—who painted on Cape Ann in his career—by stating that “Some of Mr. Arsenault’s paintings could pass for works by Edward Hopper, just at a thousandth of the price.” David is known for his colorful and dramatically-lit scenes of Cape Cod, buildings, night, and landmarks like diners and drive-ins. His most recent work, which can be seen on his website, is exclusively made up of paintings depicting places on the North Shore, specifically in and around Rockport and Gloucester.
The new year-round gallery, simply named The Art of David Arsenault, is scheduled to open for business on Friday, March 27th, from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. A Grand Opening featuring live music by The Jazz Brewers Duo, food, and beverages will take place on Saturday, April 11th with a reception from 4-7 pm. The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce will hold a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4:00. On display will be dozens of David’s original oil paintings as well as numerous giclée prints on canvas. A commemorative poster of his new painting of the iconic Motif #1, entitled “Center of Attention,” will be offered for sale at a special price; a share of the proceeds will go to The Open Door, a local organization whose mission is to alleviate the impact of hunger in the community. Different non-profit organizations will receive a share of proceeds each month throughout the calendar year

GMG Exclusive: MOSSE the Band to play at Minglewood Tavern this Saturday

MOSSE Minglewood graphic

By John McElhenny

A hot new band called MOSSE will play at Minglewood Tavern this Saturday night. Andrew Luman, the band’s bass player and front man, lives in downtown Gloucester so Good Morning Gloucester sat down with him for an exclusive interview to get the scoop on the band, his rock star hair and whether he ever met Ric Ocasek from the Cars.

GMG: Thanks for talking with Good Morning Gloucester, Andrew. You and your family live across the street from the Cape Ann Museum in downtown Gloucester. Do you ever have to call the cops because it gets really loud over there? Museum people can be crazy.

Luman: You’d think it would be crazy over there but they are really chill people.

GMG: You play in this cool new band that’s playing at Minglewood Tavern on Saturday night — a band called “Mosse.” Your name sounds like ferns or lichen or something. Where’d you come up with it?

Luman: We went through other names that sounded like fungus but “Fern Notice” and “Shrooms With a View” were already taken. So we went with “Mosse.”

GMG: I’m trying to figure out the pronunciation of the band’s name, “Mosse.” Does it rhyme with “floss” like dental floss or “moose” like the animal with the big antlers? Somebody told me it rhymes with “Donna Ardizzoni.” Is that true?

Luman: Making our name impossible to pronounce was a savvy marketing technique. Not only does it not roll off your tongue, it doesn’t even make its way onto your tongue. (It’s pronounced “MOSS-ee.”)

GMG: Joey C’s favorite bands are the Bee Gees, Whitesnake and Loverboy. Does Mosse cover any of their songs?

Luman: No.

GMG: I’ve seen Mosse play out a couple times in Gloucester and you sound really good. When you play, I’ve noticed you do this rock star thing where you put your hair in a little pony tail that looks kinda ninja but also like the nub tail that’s left on a Doberman’s ass. Which look are you going for?

Luman: Definitely the ninja one.

GMG: What kind of music does Mosse play?

Luman: We like to bring Neil Young and Ryan Adams to the dinner table and have Wilco for dessert. Our originals are made from the same ingredients.

GMG: Good Morning Gloucester contributor Kim Smith’s husband Tom was a rock star and knows Ric Ocasek, the lead singer of The Cars. Do you know Ric Ocasek from The Cars?

Luman: No.

GMG: People should know you’re a legit musician who has performed several times at Carnegie Hall in New York, which is like the most famous concert venue in the world or something. What was it like playing there?

Luman: Exactly like Minglewood Tavern but bigger.

GMG: How did Mosse the band get started?

Luman: Mosse was formed by magic. And by magic, I mean we are all teachers who love music and wanted to play in a band without ego and frustration. One of our guitar players, Jerry Smith, was born and raised in Gloucester. Rich Lehrer is our other guitar player and Pete Koeplin is our drummer. We started playing together and slowly weeded through songs until we found the musical core that suited us.  So basically magic.

GMG: Peter and Vickie Van Ness are going to be mad at me for encroaching on their turf and doing a concert preview. This is definitely going to lead to an all-out concert promoter war. Which will be hard because they’re smarter than me and I know zero about music. What time is Mosse playing at Minglewood Tavern this Saturday?

Luman: 9 p.m. Hope to see you there.
