How solar power and electric cars could make suburban living awesome again
From the Washington Post:
The suburbs have had it rough in the last few years. The 2008-2009 economic collapse led to waves of foreclosures in suburbia, as home prices plummeted. More recently, census data suggest that Americans are actually shifting back closer to city centers, often giving up on the dream of a big home in suburbs (much less the far-flung “exurbs”).
It doesn’t help that suburbia has long been the poster child for unsustainable living. You have to drive farther to work, so you use a lot of gas. Meanwhile, while having a bigger home may be a plus, that home is also costlier to heat and cool. It all adds up — not just in electricity bills, but in overall greenhouse gas emissions. That’s why suburbanites, in general, tend to have bigger carbon footprints than city dwellers.
You can see as much in this amazing map from researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, showing how carbon footprints go up sharply along the east coast as you move away from city centers:

Affordable Electric cars are Coming Soon Study Says
From Gizmodo
For many of us, purchasing an electric vehicle is still a pie in the sky dream. But that might be changing soon, if a new peer-reviewed study is correct that the cost of electric car batteries is falling much more quickly than we assumed.
Lithium ion batteries make up anywhere between a quarter and half the cost of electric cars today. By systematically reviewing over 80 cost estimates published between 2007 and 2014, researchers at the Stockholm Environment Institute found that the cost of Li-battery packs used by leading manufacturers like Tesla and Nissan is falling by roughly 8 % per year. That’s similar to the rate that was seen with the nickel metal hydride battery technology used in hybrids like the Toyota Prius.
What’s more, it means that battery cost is rapidly approaching a threshold that could make the average Joe think seriously about trading in his gas guzzler. According to MIT Technology Review:

Gloucester’s Tyrian-Ashler-Acacia Lodge, 27 Eastern Avenue, is hosting an Open House this coming Saturday
Dear Joey,
Might you be able to help publicize our Spring Open House, by including the attached brief article and photo, showing the interior of the Lodge and some of the displays, on Good Morning Gloucester? Thank you in advance for your consideration,
Eric Bergengren, Past Master
Tyrian-Ashler-Acacia Lodge
Gloucester’s Tyrian-Ashler-Acacia Lodge, 27 Eastern Avenue, is hosting an Open House this coming Saturday, from 9 AM until 3 PM. If you’ve ever wondered who the Freemasons are, whether they are the descendants of the Knights Templars, or what the inside of their buildings looks like, here’s your chance to find out. The event is held semiannually to help the public gain a better understanding of what Freemasonry is, and the positive impact that it has on its members, their families, and community. Members will provide tours of the building, talk about Freemasonry’s history, discuss its rituals, signs, and symbols, and explain what they do.
Come join us and see the many unique and interesting items from around the world as well as local items not previously seen by the public, brought out from the Lodge’s safe deposit box. Silver work by Paul Revere, items of antiquity from the 1770’s and 1800’s, gavels made from the wood of the USS Constitution, and from King Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem will be on display. Gordon Gravelese, Master of The Tyrian-Ashler-Acacia Lodge said, “Gloucester’s Lodge has the distinction of being one of the oldest Masonic lodges in North America and we will be displaying many of these items for our open house.”
Masons locally and nationally participate in and contribute to a wide range of charities, ranging in scale from “Angel Fund” donations to local schools enabling needy students to have appropriate clothing, eyeglasses, and other necessary equipment, to the much more well-known Shriners Burn Hospitals, and a vast spectrum in between. Gravelese continued, “For men looking for a way to give back to their community and world, while enjoying the benefits of a first-rate fraternal organization, Masonry is a great place to look. By ‘making good men better,’ Freemasonry positively benefits its members, their families and local communities.”
Please join us on Saturday for more information, refreshments and a tour, or visit http://www.findmoreinmasonry.org.
Just An Update To Clear Up Any rumors On Café Bishco
On the podcast with our friends at the Gloucester Clam James Dowd and KT Toomey, James mentioned that he heard that Café Bishco might be selling.
Both Toby and I expressed our hopes that this wasn’t true because café Bishco is such a huge part of our routines for their awesome Froyo and excellent food.
Well Toby did some investigative reporting and found out that this is indeed just a rumor so everyone can rest easy tonight that everyone’s love affair with Café Bishco and the awesome owners have no plans to go anywhere soon.

GAACster Glenn Chaple’s talk "Astronomy With Small Telescopes”
What can you expect to see if you decide to get a small telescope? This month’s meeting of the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club features old friend and unflinching GAACster Glenn Chaple, and is all about what’s visible out there for the small-telescope backyard observer. You don’t need a monster scope to join the fun.
Glenn’s talk, “Astronomy With Small Telescopes,” looks into what there is to look at, through a tour of the universe, from our neighbor, the moon, to a quasar 2 billion light years away. Along the way you’ll view the solar system, deep-space objects in our galaxy and beyond, and finally the quasar 3C-273 — all as seen through the “eye” of small-aperture telescopes. You’ll be really surprised at how easy it is to see some amazing things.
This is one you don’t want to miss, most especially if you have some interest in seeing these things for yourself in an inexpensive telescope. The talk will include tips on skygazing with small backyard scopes, as well as good advice for the novice observer.
GAAC meets at the Lanesville Community Center, 8 Vulcan Street, @ 8:00 Friday night, April 10. There is no cost, and parking is free too. You can learn more about the club on our website, http://gaac.us, our facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/gaacpage, or our twitter feed, @gaactweet .
Cape Ann Painter and Photography Group will meet on Friday, April 10
Hi Everyone,
Happy Spring!
Our next Cape Ann Painter and Photography Group will meet on Friday, April 10 from 9-10:30 AM at Cape Ann Giclee on 20 Maplewood Avenue,Gloucester. Thanks to James and Anna Eves for the generous use of their space and their enthusiastic participation in the group.
The consensus at the last meeting in March was that it was a good idea to keep the painters and photographers in one group as we have always done. We realized that we all experience a similar creative process.
The group was founded three years ago with the goal of having Cape Ann painters and photographers get a chance to meet each other, offer support, share ideas and have some fun.
James Eves has recently agreed to facilitate the group .We will follow a more structured format which will allow a limited amount of time for each member to show a piece of work they have been working on for the month. The artist will discuss the concept behind their work, composition, color choices, etc. with feedback from the group.
We are also considering making this a 6-7:30PM Thursday group so that more people would be able to attend.
The group will continue to meet on a monthly basis and all are welcome.
Please bring your latest piece of work to share and see you on the 10th.

John Huss, Curator of the Manchester Historical Museum presents "The Saga of the St. Petersburg".
One of Manchester’s most fascinating and important figures, Captain Richard Trask, will be the subject of an upcoming program presented by the Manchester Historical. Richard Trask, abandoned by his mother at childbirth, raised by foster parents, taught the fundamentals of seamanship as a teen, captain of a series of successful merchant ships, personal friend of the czars of Russia, skipper and part-owner of the St. Petersburg – the largest ship ever built in Massachusetts at the time – was a massive figure – both physically and by reputation.
On Tuesday, April14th, you are invited to the Sacred Heart Parish Hall for a 7pm program to learn more about this important local sea captain and his strong-willed wife Abigail, when John Huss, Curator of the Manchester Historical Museum presents “The Saga of the St. Petersburg“. The program will also include the story of the museum-quality half-model of the St. Petersburg which was built and presented to the museum last year by Steve Parson of Hamilton. Steve will be joined at the podium by his mentor Matt Sutherland of Concord, one the nation’s most highly regarded model boat builders.
Refreshments served at 6:30, program starts at 7pm in the Sacred Heart Parish Hall in Manchester. Members are free, Non-members $10. To RSVP, please contact the Manchester Historical Museum at 978-526-7230 or email: info@manchesterhistoricalmuseum.org .

Glow with Grace Walk for Those in Crisis on Cape Ann
On Sunday, March 29, 2015, the Grace Center Inc. held its 3rd Annual “Glow with Grace” candlelit walk to raise awareness for its mission to help those in crisis on Cape Ann.
Founding Executive Director, Rev. Tom Bentley opened the evening with an enthusiastic and compelling talk about the impact that Grace Center is making on the Cape Ann Community. He spoke about the benefits of the cost-effectiveness of the program, noting that the organization is run primarily by a strong volunteer base.
Also, present were City Councilman, Paul McGeary and Senator Bruce Tarr. Both officials emphasized the positive contributions this program has made in such a short time.
Following the 10 minute walk from the Gloucester High School to the Fisherman Statute, Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken greeted the walkers where she also spoke of the benefits of the Grace Center. Mayor Theken stressed the increased need for the Grace Center to be open more days in the week, and she pledged additional funds if a space for operations could be found. Presently the Grace Center program must rely on donated space in three churches which can offer no more than one day each per week.
Sen. Bruce Tarr echoed the Mayor’s appeal and pledged also to help secure additional funding if possible.
The evening was concluded with Rev. Tom Bentley offering a prayer, and guiding the participants in singing “Amazing Grace.”
The Grace Center Inc. operates as a day resource center for those adults on Cape Ann who are homeless, low-income and in crisis or transition. To date, the organization has served over 600 individuals, offering breakfast and a hot lunch, along with social services. Learn more at www.gracecenterinc.org
In the winter of 2009, the Cape Ann Clergy Association recognized an increasing number of requests for help from low-income and homeless adults. A Needs Assessment Study identified a number of pressing needs including the absence of a safe day space for the homeless in Gloucester. On December 22, 2011, the Grace Center, Inc. opened as a day resource center with professional staff and volunteers. To date we have served over 600 individuals. While we are proud to get to know and encourage individuals currently experiencing homelessness, we also continue to welcome the many older adults, lonely community members, or those at high risk of or currently experiencing crisis. No matter the life circumstances that have brought our guests to our doors, we strive to always provide gifts of acceptance, hospitality, and opportunity to all we meet.
