Cape Ann Contra Dance This Friday

Hi Joey,

After a loooong winter we’re ready to celebrate spring with a contra dance at the Magnolia Library Center, 7:30 PM, this Friday, April 17.

Contra dancing is fun, it’s social, it’s mildly aerobic, and it features exceptionally fine live music.

Attendees don’t need to have previous experience – everything is taught. And it’s not necessary to come with a partner, either.

We love to see new folks discover the joy of dancing for the very first time and we hope to have both new friends and old join us this Friday.

The Cape Ann Contra Dances are organized and produced by Folk Life Studio, and they are supported in part by a grant from the Gloucester Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

There is a requested donation of $10 per dancer, dancers younger than 16 are free.

For more information, contact capeanncontradance@gmail.com, or find us at

Thanks for keeping our community well informed.

GLOUCESTER’S MAYOR PLEDGES MONEY TO EXTEND PROGRAM TO 5 DAYS

GLOUCESTER, MA

“The Grace Center has become a very important part of what our community needs. People who are in trouble now rely on this program for basic support and safe space during the day. For years I have worked with people with these disabilities, and I know many of them personally. As mayor I am committing $15,000 from the city’s 2015 Community Development Block Grant budget.  This is a challenge grant to encourage the Grace Center to expand to five days of operations. Gloucester critically needs this, and I am confident that the many partner agencies, churches, and leaders involved will work with me to make this possible.” – MAYOR SEFATIA ROMEO THEKEN

The Grace Center Inc. operates as a day resource center for those adults on Cape Ann who are homeless,  low-income and in crisis or transition. To date, the organization has served over 600 individuals, offering breakfast and a hot lunch, along with social services. Learn more at www.gracecenterinc.org

Grilling Season Baby!

Grilling Tips?  Grilling Gadgets you wanna talk about? Leave them here.

I consider myself pretty good on the grill but I had one misfire yesterday.  I used wooden spikes like they use for chicken satay and they burned right up.  Gotta get some metal skewers I guess.

A GMG Tradition Unlike Any Other- The Annual Friends Don’t Let Friends Buy Ugly Red Mulch Post

I think we’re going on 5 or 6 years now and at some point you’d think I wouldn’t have to remind folks but at the first signs of the palletloads of brown and (icky) red mulch showing up at Shaws I’m here to save the design challenged folks of the world that just might not understand how trashy the red mulch looks.  For those of you that might need a refresher I’ll dial up the way back machine to posts from 2012 and 2013-

RED MULCH IS HIDDEOUSGET THE DARK BROWN MULCH, IT’S 1000% MORE CLASSY LOOKING

Orange Mulch Is A Fail

Posted on June 19, 2013

Someone needs to clue me in on how you could go to the landscape supply joint and make the conscious decision to buy orange mulch over the nice dark brown (almost black) compost mulch. I’ll go dark brown mulch all day long over toxic waste neon orange mulch. It’s just way more aesthetically pleasing. I don’t know a whole lot about landscape supply costs. Maybe they pay people who opt for the neon orange mulch to take it away from their landscape supply yard. I can’t think of a single other reason someone would choose it over the classy dark brown. They actually dye it that hideous orange color. You gotta be a savage to get the orange stuff, no? What am I missing here? image
