Lou and Gail Snitkoff represent! At The Lincoln Center

Hi, Joey.

Somehow my wife, Gail, and I managed to get to midtown Manhattan (Lincoln Center) before we made it to downtown Albany, NY–where we live.

So, here’s a pic of GMG at Lincoln Center…

Thanks again for the stickers.

About Our Award For Being Named Small Businesspersons Organization of The Year…

gmglogohires

I don’t have to go into the reason that this is obviously a shared award, right?

Well I’m gonna, just in case anyone doesn’t think otherwise.

Such a great honor for our team.  If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it ten thousand times, Good Morning Gloucester with only one person contributing is infinitely less impactful than it is when you have such a dedicated group of people all pulling in the same direction, all with incredibly positive attitudes, all working for good and trying to have fun along the way.

Just like our family business, Captain Joe and Sons is not nearly what it is without my incredibly rock solid partner and cousin Frankie. Good Morning Gloucester is just another blog without all of the readers, commenters and contributors who all have a shared passion for this place.

Probably the single greatest influence creatively in my life has been my mom.  She pushed my sister and I to try as many different things as we could growing up, took us out of our comfort zone and sent us to Bishop Fenwick which forced us to leave our close friends at home and learn how to socially adapt outside of the small network of family and friends and prepared us for college. So thanks mom for all your love and support.

No one wins awards alone.  It’s the people that are around you that you draw strength from and by working together and pulling for good and fun, that’s when awards are given.

I’d also like to recognize Barbara Keon who in the first year of the blog told me the Buddhist expression “The most selfish thing to do is to give.”

I didn’t understand it at first but it all made sense in practice.

Thanks to the Chamber for recognizing our work and congratulations to the other recipients of this award from our surrounding communities- Mike Storella of Central Street Gallery in Manchester, Karin and Ken Porter of Roy Moore Lobster Company and Roy Moore’s Fish Shack in Rockport, and Tim and Vickie Kennefick of the Windward Grille in Essex.

Just wish my dad had his wits about him to celebrate our good fortune.

Love our team. Can’t tell you how fortunate I am to have you all in my life.  Thanks to everyone that has touched the GMG community to make it the positive force that it has become. Thanks each and every one of you.

Printmaker Needed!

Hi Joey,

This is Mary Rhinelander here, of Cape Ann Blue Willow fame. I am not sure if you list things like this, but I am losing one of my print coop. members and must find someone to take their place and help offset the monthly rent.  Located in the Beacon Marine Building, the Shop is a pretty magical place to work, with with tide rising and falling literally underneath you! If there is room in your line-up one of these days, I would most appreciate a post. Image of the press and my contact info. are attached.

Many thanks,

Mary

The first one sold out in four or five hours…

image011

The second one sold out on the first day. Marketing and trying to stay current, here’s to a local employee’s initiative.

Kayleigh Bishop, bar manager for Jalapenos had a hunch Paint Nite would be a good fit for Sundays.  She and a couple of friends enjoyed one in Boston. Why not here? She was right. “They have been a huge positive, selling out weeks ahead of time. They’re so much fun to work. And just to be there for it—just to witness!” For Jalapenos, at first it was mainly regulars. Gradually it began to bring different crowds of people, sometimes older, sometimes younger, some from other towns. It energizes the regular business.  Jalapenos jumped in with the new programming January 2015. “People come in early, grab a seat. We’ve tried the back room and the bar area. The instructors are funny and personable, hands on.”  The teacher, Quinn Ramini, Paint Nite artist, is a local; he grew up in Maine and now resides and works in Gloucester. He’s also a trained artist teaching this class a few times a week or month. “Gloucester has an incredibly vibrant history and colorful culture which makes Paint Nite a perfect match,” he says. “The vibe that the town exudes compliments the event…I love hosting events here!”

Jalapeno’s Bishop suggests arriving early to grab a seat and order some food before starting- “the paint area not enough room to eat where you paint.” Then sit down with drinks and music. “Everyone leaves with some fun.” Bishop likes Paint Nite’s community–someone from here– purpose.

Anything else? “Look for groupons!” Maybe they can arrange with UBER, too.

Paint Nite raised 13 million in another round of financing in February and celebrated its 3 year anniversary.

GMG Housekeeping

favorite

Just back from the last vacation days of the year.  Hitting the ground running with a little site redesign to try to improve load times and make things less messy up at the top.

First things first, I had to let go of the slider up at the top.

I was in love with the idea of the slider and actually paid for a custom WordPress design which allowed for it but after having it for about a year I just can’t deny that it is distracting and added to load times.

So poof, it’s gone.

Secondly I changed the theme to allow for a full width scalable format meaning that our contributors can now post larger photos and videos and the blog will detect what size your monitor is and adjust accordingly.

Thirdly, the Navigation buttons are now implemented and stickied at the top of the blog which should allow you to find your way around much more easily.  All thanks for our awesome new navigation buttons go to James at Cape Ann Giclee who made them for us.

So in the past couple months, I launched www.capeanneats.com, www.capeannhome.wordpress.com, www.capeannwellness.com, built a new GMG Android App, implemented James’s awesome Cape Ann Arts Calendar, cleaned up the navigation with James’ help, got rid of the slider to improve load times, and increased the blog from a fixed width to a larger format scalable width to display photos and videos larger.

Rest on our laurels after 7 and a half years? Aw, Hellll Nooo.

Keep on pushing baby!

and guess what? we’ve got some more stuff up our sleeve Smile

Jim Dowd Pitches The Common Crow IndiGoGo Campaign

Jo-E!

What’s up, neighbor?

Last time I was on the podcast we discussed how obnoxious all the Kickstarter/Gofundme/Indigogo/gimmiemoneydotcom.com action has gotten. Lately it does seem like everyone with a life goal expects somebody else to pay for it. We also railed on established businesses using Kickstarter in lieu of just getting a bank loan like normal people.

On that last point I’m going to walk back a little as part of the team helping the Common Crow move out to Eastern Ave. Kate and Pat (the owners) are taking a ginormous leap, investing literally a million dollars in partnership with Cape Ann Savings, the city’s Small Business Development arm and Stan Poole the owner/builder of the site and his crew. When they move out there next month the store will employ over 40 people full-time with bennies. And it’s a truly homegrown local business; they literally started in the corner of the Glass Sailboat on Duncan St. 15 years ago.

The Common Crow is going to crowdfund as part of their financing mix in order to pay for a few things they might otherwise put off at the outset and the rewards are pretty sweet if you are into what they have to offer. Stuff like bottomless cups of coffee, gift bags full of product, charcuterie boards (full disclosure: I had no idea what the crap that was a week ago), original pieces from local artists and and of course T-shirts and tote bags because that is apparently the law or something.

Folks should check it out and throw some support their way. It’s truly a local success story.

Later!

–Jim

North Shore Pride Invites the Community to Join in Standing Proud Together

Full Week of Educational, Cultural and Community Events Mark Fourth Annual LGBT and Allied Pride Celebration this June

The fourth annual North Shore Pride Parade and Festival will take place Saturday, June 20, 2015, in Salem, MA. The theme of this year’s celebration, voted on by members of the community, is Standing Proud Together.

New this year is a week long calendar of educational, cultural and community events leading up to the parade and festival, including a free “lunch and learn” on Monday, June 15, focused on how to make cities and towns more welcoming for LGBT people.

“The mission of North Shore Pride has always been to create unity in our community,” said president and founder Hope Watt-Bucci. “I’m proud to be expanding our educational mission this year by providing an opportunity for local officials and members of the public to hear from dedicated advocates like Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll and Mason Dunn of the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition about steps we can all take to make our North Shore cities and towns more unified and welcoming for all.”

“With a full week of events including a movie night, interfaith service and more, there’s something for everyone to participate in,” Watt-Bucci added, “It takes every one of us to make change in our communities, and this year we truly are standing proud together.”

The Grand Marshal of the 2015 North Shore Pride Parade is OUTVETS, a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the contributions and sacrifices of LGBTQ Veterans, active service members, and their families. OUTVETS made history earlier this year as the first LGBT organization to officially march openly in the South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

This year’s entertainment lineup at the festival on the Salem Common includes headliners XELLE (pronounced “XL”).  XELLE’s original, high energy songs sound like a delicious mix of Katy Perry, ABBA and The Spice Girls, and they’ve headlined pride festivals in Chicago, San Francisco, New York and more.

XELLE promotes a strong message of self-acceptance and empowerment. They released the song Red Flag as a powerful human rights anthem, in conjunction with the #iRaiseARedFlag online protest to inspire everyone who cares about equality to make their views known and raise their voice against oppression.

Also in our lineup: Adrienne Mack Davis as part of her world tour, local favorites, The DeJas, Rolla, Big Ol’ Dirty Bucket, Sarah & The Wild Versatile, Jenn Lombari and Lucky United.

North Shore Pride is a 100% volunteer run non-profit organization. The annual North Shore Pride Parade, Festival and year-round community events are made possible by the work of countless volunteers, individual donations and the support of community sponsors.

A full calendar of 2015 North Shore Pride events follows below. Complete details, including how to register to march in the parade, be a vendor at the festival, sponsor or volunteer, can be found at www.northshorepride.org.

To carry out these purposes, the organization engages in activities designed to promote greater understanding of LGBT issues, educates the members of the LGBT community on issues of importance to them and engages in fundraising activities, partnering with individuals and organizations, in furtherance of its stated purpose.

My name is Lin Chandler and I am the owner of 222 Arts & Wellness Center
at 222 Eastern Ave. in Gloucester.
I am so excited to spend the evening with all of you this Thursday, May
21st. I am writing to let you know a little bit about us over at 222
Arts & Wellness Center, in the event that you were “on the fence” as to
whether this evening is what you really need. I say “YES IT IS!” and let
me explain why.  We are a caring, nurturing community of lightworkers.
We are privileged to have a wide variety of clients with different lives
and avocations, but they all have one thing in common. They are
wondering, “Am I the best person that I am supposed to be, and is my
life the very best it can be?”
We’re all different – maybe meditation will help some of you tune in,
where others may need crystals and singing bowls. Maybe breathing
exercises and songs will help you.
This Thursday, please come and safely experience some of these
therapeutic practices to see what supports you the best. Because your
higher source energy also has a plan for you and knows what is the very
best for you, we are more than happy to use cards, pendulums, crystals,
essential oils, etc., to get those very important questions answered for
you.
Come enjoy this peaceful evening of spiritual tapas with us. Sample
therapeutic practices that interest you. I promise you will be uplifted,
confident and more joyful when the evening is done. Amazing sharing,
caring spirit community, great food, friends, a walking labyrinth,
bonfire and even some songs…it doesn’t get any better than this!
The event is $30.00.
SPACE IS LIMITED AND FILLING UP! YOU MUST RSVP TO THIS EVENT!
Thank you!

2015 Essex River Race Results

Results for this year’s Essex River Race. The
race happened yesterday, May 16.  It’s an approximately 5 1/2 mile race
down the Essex River, around Cross Island by Conomo Point, and back to
Rt. 133 at the Essex Ship Building Museum.  The conditions were awesome,
temps in the low 70’s, sea breeze, overcast with just a hint of a
sprinkle now and again.
Chris Chappell, you can post these on the web site.  I am quite
confident of the results as the timing crew was impeccable.  So I am
also sending this out to the press.
Wonderful day, excellent event.  Thanks to all!
Peace, Dave
