Oscar Wilde Quote of the Week from Greg Bover

“Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes.”

Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)

Born in Dublin to intellectual parents, Wilde was a leading light of the Aesthetics Movement, which included Whistler, Pater, Swinburne and Waugh among others, and celebrated beauty for its own sake rather than the social uplift it might provide as championed by Ruskin et alia. Better known for his incomparable satiric plays such as The Importance of Being Earnest, Wilde’s sole novel was the darkly Faustian The Picture of Dorian Gray. Although very successful as an essayist and lecturer, he died penniless in France after being jailed and then hounded from England for his sexual preferences. His last words, perhaps apocryphal, as he lay on his death bed surrounded by creditors: “Well gentlemen, I seem to be dying beyond my means.”

Fun Facts About Gloucester’s Breakwater From Terry Weber

Fun Facts About Gloucester’s Breakwater

Because I am a research geek, I present to you some fun facts about Gloucester’s breakwater.

This 2,250 foot breakwater was built by the Army Corps of Engineers aided by the Rockport Granite Company between 1894 – 1905.

Its official name is the Dog Bar Breakwater.

It was built partly because after Eastern Point Lighthouse was lit in 1832, ships continued to run aground on Dog Bar Reef. Residents also wanted to keep rough water out of the harbor during storms.

The substructure is a rubble hill made from grout, broken granite and the refuse from quarries, averaging 100 feet wide at the base and gradually narrowing to about 30 feet.

The rubble was dumped overboard in a line and allowed to “settle” for several years until it was ready for the top structure, or “superstructure.”

The superstructure is composed of seven tiers of cut granite, placed on top of each other in pyramid-like fashion.

Each of the top capstones weights at least ten tons.

Further extension of the breakwater was considered, but officials at the time could not agree whether it was necessary, or would have adverse affects on the harbor.

Cost at the time was $300,000 to $500,000; now it would cost an estimated 14 million.

The breakwater was described in a 1905 Boston Globe article as a “delightful promenade for the people.”

Dog Bar Breakwater is now part of a 53-acre nature preserve owned by the Massachusetts Audubon Society. Monarch butterflies and seabirds can be spotted there.

Nearby the breakwater, towards the Eastern Point lighthouse, you can find “Mother Ann’s Rock”—a rock formation similar to New Hampshire’s Old Man of the Mountain. You can find a great post about Mother Ann’s Rock from E.J. LeFavour on GMG, just put the words “Mother Ann” into the Search Box, and you will see it about three posts down.

Did you know? A short loop trail through a nearby “forest“ is located across from a cul-de-sac named Aileen Terrace. It’s public and you can walk it if you can find it!

2015 Citizenship Awards Event May 31st- List of Recipients

On Sunday, May 31, the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church will present its annual Citizenship Awards to thirteen Cape Ann residents to honor their selfless contributions to this city.

The recipients come from all walks of life. Some are known for simple deeds they do for their neighbors. Others give their time and efforts to a larger community. All have made a mark on Gloucester, and have been selected by a group from the church’s Social Justice Committee because their actions embody the best of the spirit that guides Unitarian Universalism – open-hearted giving to others, solely for what those gifts mean, for no pay, and often with no public notice.

The award recipients were nominated not just by members of the church but by individuals and organizations throughout the city. Many winners have no idea who nominated them and will not find out until they arrive at the ceremony.

This year’s recipients are Carol Ackerman, Jerry Ackerman, Roger Armstrong, Rosemary Ginivan Attridge, Janis Bell, Greg Bover, Harold Burnham, James Fialho, Mary Rhinelander McCarl, Bill Melvin, Arline Moore, Nicole Richon Schoel, and Brent “Ringo” Tarr.

Be sure to mark your calendar for this event, which grows in popularity every year. The ceremony, which is informal, begins at 3 p.m. in the church sanctuary, with a reception downstairs in the church vestry to follow.

The church is located at the corner of Church and Middle Streets. Both floors are handicapped accessible via the 10 Church Street entrance. The event is open to all free of charge; freewill donations will be gratefully accepted
