Live Blogging The Lannon, Plus Ninety Cigars,  Ryan and Wood, GMG  Cigar and Rum Cruise

Every year it’s the same old story.  I tell everyone ahead of time to order your tickets fast because it always sells out fast and then the day of I get 20 phone calls asking me how they can get on the boat.  They get left out and the smart ones many returning Cigar and Rum Alumnus have gone on every single cruise because they book right away.  Aaaand once again at the end of the night everyone is patting each other on the back saying “Jesus wasn’t that awesome?”  “Best night of the summer.”  “I look forward to this every year”

All I can say is that if you missed out on a sail on the most beaufiul boat in Gloucester, look for the date for Felicia’s wine and food cruise coming up soon (date TBD).  Thanks Paul, Bobby, Heath, everyone that came out and the great crew on the Lannon.

Look for Nichole and Manny’s photos with lots of pictures of our Motley Crew in their respective posts.

Rose Baker Artist Honorees

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

July 11, 2016 ~ oldfolks76

Juni Van Dyke has selected Bob Quinn and Barbara Maddix as the Rose Baker Summer Artists and they are being honored with an exhibit of their work in the lobby of the Rose Baker Senior Center. Juni is the instructor and Director of the Rose Baker Art Program and every two months she selects one or two artists from the Program for this honor.

Bob Quinn (l) and Barbara Maddix (c) with Art Director Juni Van Dyke standing in front of the summer exhibit.

Even before Bob Quinn enrolled in his favorite high school class, mechanical drawing, he knew art would always be an important part of his life. Over the years, Bob has developed enviable skills in leather carving, metal work, stained glass, and computer graphics and video. His professional career was in marketing and advertising which allowed him to put his creativity and artistic eye to work in the business world.

Bob admires the many notable Cape Ann’s artists, and has used their work to inspire his own personal style of drawing, sketching, and watercolor.  Bob’s style is straight forward, unencumbered, and charming.  On exhibit at Rose Baker are works that delight the eye and reflect the subjects he loves most:  Gloucester and all that is of the sea.

After retiring from a long career assisting one of Boston’s most prominent judges, Barbara Maddix has followed her lifelong interest in art.  Barbara joined the Senior Art Program over 24 years ago. Now in her nineties, Barbara is still an active member of the Art Program.  Some of her most recent contributions to the Program include creating ceramic bowls for Gloucester’s Empty Bowl Dinner and creating numerous iconic scenes for Art Program’s Neighborhood Quilt Project.

Barbara’s paintings are joyful and childlike.  They are rendered with exuberance and a unique sense of color that reflects Barbara’s happy outgoing love of life and the world around her.

The summer show is on display from now until the end of August in the main lobby of the Rose Baker Senior Center at 6 Manuel F. Lewis St in Gloucester. The show can be viewed weekdays from 9am to 4pm.

A VERY SPECIAL FAMILY From Skip Bertolino

IMG_0412

Skip Bertolino writes-

7/1/16                                               A Very Special Family

I was driving my car on Decatur Street in East Gloucester during the 4th of July weekend when I noticed a young boy all alone sitting behind with what I perceived was a lemonade stand selling lemonade and with a handmade sigh that read “100 % Profits to US Veterans” so I stopped the car rolled down the passenger side window and asked him.

What are u selling, he told me he’s selling “Arnold Palmers, which is a mix of lemonade & ice tea.

I said Wow I’ll take one of those, how much are they? he said 50 cents. I asked him his name he said, “Sean Bergin”. I asked where do u live he said just up the street.

As he was mixing the drink I asked him, Sean what are u doing with the money he reply’s I’m giving it all to the veterans.

He finishes mixing the drink, and he walks to the passenger side window of my car and hands me the drink and I pay him with a little extra for his cause & I thanked him.

As he was walking back to his stand, I called Sean, and as he turned around I said to him, “I want to thank you for what u are doing for the Veterans, as a Veteran myself, it is greatly appreciated.

He then proceeds to start to walk back to the car with the money I paid him, he puts the money back through the  window looks me straight in the eye  says to me  “You’re a veteran ?” I said yes, if you’re a veteran the drink is FREE!!

I must tell you I was speechless, to be that young and to be so giving of his time to raise money for Vets and to think of Veterans in that way.

I finally gathered my thoughts and I thanked him but told him to please keep the money for his cause he said, OK!

That night I said I have to go back tomorrow and get a picture of that fine young man and that awesome stand.

So the next day I drive down with my wife to take a picture and what do I find, not only was

Sean age 11 at the stand but his brother Ryan age 13 and there 2 cousins Sofia & Olivia Codis ages 10 and 7. I was beside myself with joy they had made this July 4th very special.

Upon leaving I asked the group why you are doing this. Ryan responds, well some Veterans when they came back weren’t treated very well so we want to help them.

I think I can speak for all Veterans and their families this weekend you surely have!

Sean, Ryan, Sofia, Olivia God Bless You, thank you and thanks for thinking of us veterans.

We salute you,,, Job Well Done!

We had an absolute blast at the Fishtown Horribles Parade and fireworks on the 3rd and Rockport Fireman’s Association Parade and bonfire on the 4th. I extend to all of the volunteers, organizations, musicians, and public safety officials a sincere thank you for making these events such a rousing fun success year after year.

Cape Ann is such a great place to visit, live, work, raise a family, and run a business. Not just because of the beaches, the woods, the dining, the museums, the arts, the sunrises over Thacher and the sunsets over Ipswich Bay. There is something far more powerful than any of that. It is the people.
