Students paint garden benches for GEF 10th Birthday Gala

East Gloucester Elementary School students paint a garden bench that will be auctioned off at the 10th Birthday Gala for the Gloucester Education Foundation.

The Gloucester Education Foundation’s 10th Birthday Gala will be held on Friday, November 4th at the Beauport Hotel.

The evening is a fundraising event to celebrate and support GEF, and the organization’s work in the Gloucester Public Schools. In addition to the silent and live auctions, which will include the garden benches painted by students at each of the Gloucester schools, the night will feature a raffle with prizes from area businesses like Styles on Main, Pop Gallery and Treetop Yoga.

Plus hos d’oeuvres, dessert, cash bar, live music, dancing, birthday games and more!

Hettie Jones will discuss her first meeting with Olson, her impressions of Gloucester, a selection from Love, H, her recently published book of correspondence with Helene Dorn, and some recent unpublished poems.

A talk presented by poet Hettie Jones, in collaboration with the Gloucester Writers Center and the Charles Olson Society. Jones’ first collection of poems, Drive (Hanging Loose Press, 1997), was selected by Naomi Shihab Nye to receive the Norma Farber First Book Award from the Poetry Society of America. She is also the author of How I Became Hettie Jones (1990) and several books for children. The former Chair of PEN’s Prison Writing Committee, she currently teaches graduate writing at The New School, and workshops at 92Y and the Lower Eastside Girls Club Center for Community.

Concert on the Adams Organ at the Annisquam Village Church

This special concert, held at the Annisquam Village Church, is offered in conjunction with Voicing the Woods: Jeremy Adams, Instrument Maker,  on view at the Cape Ann Museum from October 22, 2016 through February 26, 2017.

Organist Kevin Birch will play the Adams Organ, built in 1986, and a clavichord (also built by Adams, in 1999).

Birch has performed throughout the United States, Europe and South America. He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Iowa with previous studies at the Sweelinck Conservatory (Amsterdam) and the New England Conservatory (Boston).

The Annisquam Village Church is located at the head of Lobster Cove at the corner of Washington and Leonard Streets, the 1830’s building is renowned for its graceful beauty and extraordinary acoustics.

This program is $10 for Museum and American Guild of Organists Society (AGO) members / $15 for nonmembers. Tickets can be purchased by calling (978) 283-0455 x10 or online at Eventbrite. Advance tickets are required.

    Condition: lots of rust on the legs/triangle. Missing ash sweeps rusted in ash sweep bolt. White paint dots on the faded lid.  Usual cruddy bowl.  Missing handle.  Rusted/oxidized lid vent.  Missing ash pan.

    4AM:

    Tackle the bowl with dish soap/water razor scraper/steel wool/sponge/paper towels.

    Next, what’s left of the old ash sweep system is rusted in place.  Break out the oscillating tool and cut off the bottom nubs that went through and it broke free.

    Now it’s time to clean the bottom of the bowl using the razor scraper/steel wool.

    Having the legs removed start sanding them with 150 grit sandpaper using long strokes just as is advised in the Weber Kettle Club restoration guide, and then moving up to 250 and then finishing with steel wool and then polishing.
