We hit the screaming kid lottery on the flight down.

Although we lucked out and our kids never screamed throughout flights I felt pretty bad for the parents. You know they’re just nervous wrecks the whole time.

Feeling overwhelmed or worried? Breathe …, and experience the calmness and release of tension. The simple act of breathing can slow us down physically and mentally and allow us to be more present in this moment.

Meditation becomes as simple as following the breath; a form of mindfulness.

As I write, it’s yet another cold, grey day, but GAAC has the perfect antidote to February — on Friday night, February 9 at 8:00pm, we will bring you our annual evening of astrophotography.

Five of our best astrophotographers will each show off a handful of favorite pictures they’ve taken of galaxies, nebulae and other astronomical objects, and will tell you what each one is, how big and far away it is, and any interesting issues they had getting the shot.

This event is always a colorful, fun and exciting evening, one that will leave you with a new appreciation of what these folks do, as well as a lot of new knowledge about the strange, distant and compelling objects they photograph.

Come early to see friends old and new, grab a good seat and some great goodies, and share some terrific conversation and some…

Children’s Choir Festival Makes First Gloucester Appearance on Sunday

Nearly three dozen young voices will be joined in song on Sunday, February 11th  beginning at 4 p.m. in the 10th annual Children’s Choir Festival.  It will be held in the Sanctuary of the historic 1806 Gloucester Meetinghouse, home of the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church, on the green at the corner of Middle and Church Street.  This is a wonderful event for the whole family to enjoy!

The singers, ages 5 through 18, are from three Episcopal churches, St. John’s of Gloucester, Christ Church in Andover, and All Saints Church in Chelmsford, assembled to give them an opportunity to sing as part of a larger ensemble in a grand space with a bigger audience than their home choir situations permit.

The works will range from the famous Shaker Tune, “Simple Gifts,” through religious melodies, spirituals, and a work, ‘The…

New GMG Series: Stories From Vietnam Illustrated And Told By Our Friend Hussey

Tuffy shares:

David Hussey and I started fishing together in Nahant MA in the early 70’s. I was 16 and he was 30, and he had just gotten back from spending over a year in the jungles of Vietnam as a Staff Sargent. Eventually he was transferred to the base (the rear), to serve as a Supply Sargent for the rest of his tour. This transfer saved his life.

The stories below I’ve known for years, they would be shared on long days out at sea over the 35 years we were partners. Back then, there wasn’t as much awareness about PTSD or therapy available for people leaving war, and I was glad to listen.

There are so many brutalities of war that most of us will be lucky enough to never know. For soldiers, these memories can constantly loop in their mind, sometimes for the rest of their lives. These are David Hussey’s.

Part 1
