I am a live music advocate and seek to share the news of bands playing at local venues in my home town. Being drawn to blues mostly but embrace all kinds of music. One does not have to go over the bridge to hear some real fine tunes, however there are some bands that draw you elsewhere. I hope this blog is a good use to you as it is to me.
Enjoy,
Joanne

Summer Music Series at The Studio on Rocky Neck
Summer Music Series at The Studio on Rocky Neck Kicks Off with New Orleans’ Finest, Henri Smith & Jazz Legend, Charles Neville, of the Neville Brothers.
Gloucester, MA: Victory Agents and The Studio on Rocky Neck are pleased to present the 2010 Deck Party & Concert Series! Four of the five concerts will be donating a portion of the proceeds to the Gloucester Band Boosters and the kick-off show, featuring Henri Smith and Charles Neville, will be decorated with jazz inspired art by local artist Jon Sarkin with all proceeds from art sales to be donated to Tipitina’s Foundation, (which benefits music programs in New Orleans).
The Studio on Rocky Neck boasts one of the largest outdoor decks in the Cape Ann area (right on the water); inside there is a large dance floor and a full bar, with water views. The Studio Restaurant is a Rocky Neck landmark, once the home of the Hugh Breckenridge Art School that was so important to American painting. Dockage is provided for visiting boaters. All summer series concerts will feature live music from some of the best bands in the area and all shows will have doors open at 5:30pm, show at 7pm. Free parking.
Kick-Off
The summer series kicks off with a New Orleans style Mardi Gras Party with New Orlean’s finest, Henri Smith and jazz legend, Charles Neville. The kick-off will be on Saturday, June 26 live at The Studio on Rocky Neck. There will be New Orleans inspired food, dance floor, full bar and free parking. Decorating the walls, local art phenom, Jon Sarkin will display his collection of jazz inspired art. Sarkin is donating a series of 12×12 (record size) pieces to be sold for the kick-off jazz event with all proceeds to benefit Tipitina’s Foundation.
Now considered a highlight of the Cape Ann Music scene, Smith got started in music in high school in Louisiana. His homeroom teacher was a graduate of Julliard School of Music and she developed the choir in their class. Smith says, “To this day I reflect back on her teaching when I’m on stage.”
Neville boasts a similar start “I got started in music as a kid. There was a drum and bugle corps in the grade school I attended. I started playing snare drum in 5th grade. I played the bugle for a while also. When I graduated from 8th grade I got a saxophone. I had been exposed to music at home and everywhere else in New Orleans. Music was a big part of the life of the city. Most of my family members played an instrument or sang and everyone danced. Music was the most desirable career option that was open to me and I loved it from the start.”
When asked about their early musical influences, both Smith and Neville named a Louis as a musician who made them want to focus on music, however while Smith cites trumpeter Louis Armstrong, Neville was drawn to sax-man, Louis Jordan.
Says Neville, “One of my earliest influences was sax man Louis Jordan. I saw him in film clips, called movie shorts, at the theatre near my home. He seemed to be having such a good time playing and the sound of the horn always seemed to carry some sort of message. Hearing it made me feel good. After I started playing, I heard James Moody and Charlie Parker as well the sax players on the Rhythm and Blues recordings that were popular at the time. Charlie Parker sounded like nothing I had heard before and his sound was really emotional. He was my biggest influence.
Smith recalls Louis Armstrong and others who played a part in his early musical fascination: “My major influence is still “Pops” Louis Armstrong. His phrasing while singing is the best, not to mention his stage presence. Also, Joe Williams, Lou Rawls, New Orleans legend (and friend) Antoine “Fats” Domino, and, of course, Aaron Neville.” Smith remembers seeing Aaron and the Neville Brothers growing up in New Orleans even before their stardom; He says, “Aaron can sing anything in his own way.”
When asked about what he’s got on his cd player these days, Neville says he is still listening to Charlie Parker and John Coltrane “as well as the great artists who recorded in the 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s. Blues, Rhythm and Blues, Classical, Latin, African, Reggae and…just about all music.”
And what’s on Smith’s stereo? “Marvin Gaye’s eleventh album What’s Going On, Louis Armstrong’s Live in Berlin, and anything by Nat ” King” Cole. All three can tell a story and get inside my heart and move me to be a part of the music.”
Although he now happily calls Gloucester home, (displaced from NOLA after Hurricane Katrina), Smith still honors his roots in New Orleans with his band New Orleans Friends and Flavours. He travels back often as does his musical match Neville. Both of these jazz superstars rely heavily on their musical origins and both support New Orleans’ Tipitina’s Foundation.
Named after a classic New Orleans piano tune written by Professor Longhair, Tipitina’s Foundation was created as an effort to preserve Louisiana music and culture. The foundation donates facilities to schools in the city and surrounding areas. They also run workshops teaching music and instruments, and “help the children of New Orleans understand and perpetuate the music and style of New Orleans.”
According to Smith, “I was a part of Tipitina’s Foundation before Hurricane Katrina and Rita. The foundation has launched a lot of young musical careers. One product of their service is a young New Orleans drummer who is attending The New England Conservatory, and who now plays with me on a regular basis.”
For Charles, Tipitina’s is an important program, but it also has other meaning— “The club, Tipitinas, is one of the first places we performed when we started the Neville Brothers Band. It’s still a Mecca for New Orleans music. They have featured some of the best New Orleans artists for many years and it’s the place that we, The Neville Brothers, performed at the most often in New Orleans.”
You can catch Henri Smith and Charles Neville’s New Orleans Mardi Gras Celebration on Saturday, June 26 at The Studio on Rocky Neck. Tickets are $20 at the door. 51 Rocky Neck Ave, Gloucester, 978.283.4123
Jon Sarkin
Local artist, Jon Sarkin, is well known in the Gloucester area and beyond. Often called the “accidental artist,” Sarkin became an artist later in life after a stroke, which metamorphosed him in many ways, including a compulsive need to create. Sarkin has been featured from Rocky Neck West Hollywood to the DeCordova, and his art has been purchased and shipped around the globe. He is happy to donate his jazz inspired art to the Mardi Gras show, and will donate all proceeds to Tipitina’s Foundation.
Gloucester Band Boosters Donation
The Gloucester Band Boosters are group that supports instrumental and string music in Gloucester Public Schools. An organization of parents, businesses and community members that provides funding for much of the expenses associated with the Gloucester elementary school band, string ensemble, as well as the O’Maley Middle School Concert, Marching and Jazz bands.
The Boosters frequently provide music for civic celebrations and events such as Pride Stride. They are still providing this and many other important community services with our young musicians. Victory Agents, The Studio, and the artists participating in the summer series, are pleased to donate a portion of the proceeds from our shows, to music programs and education in the Gloucester schools.

Megan McKenzie Band @ The Dog Bar June 19, 2010
Just a heads-up – Scarlett (formerly Slingdaddy), with replacement singer
Megan Downey has been asked back to the Dogbar as the Megan McKenzie Band this Saturday, June 19th. I know it’s a little confusing (we will try to issue programs at the show so you can keep up) but we are also using Tod Ellyson on drums as our regular drummer is unavailable. It is also the first block party of the summer in Gloucester so Main Street will be
hopping. As a result, we are looking at an earlier start time (8:30pm to
close). So come on down.
Megan Downey, Frank Hawks, Jon Donlon and Tod Ellyson

Bingo Fridays tonight at Lat43
I have to tell you if you have not seen these guys it is a must. Young and full of energy and bringing Rock/Roots Music/Psychedelic to the music scene. They write a lot of their own music and do some pretty massive Hendrix too. I say to myself how can they get any better, seriously. Try to stop by and check them out if you can.

Here is a sample of what these guys bring to you.
Two weeks of Dog Bar happenings.

The Gloucester scene: Fiesta Closing in
Written by: Patrick Fitzpatrick
Welcome to my wonderful readers to the latest edition of the Gloucester Scene blog. I realize I kind of took a bit of a hiatus from the writing, but the past couple weeks have been quite intense. There’s so many places to go, literally every night of the week I’ve been playing something somewhere. From impromptu gigs to jams and open mics, Gloucester has had a lot to offer recently in terms of entertainment. Starting off this past Sunday, The Revival featuring Peter Ryan, Megan Downey, Patrick Fitzpatrick and special guest Jesse Downey rocked in the bar of the Dogbar restaurant. We also had Mister Bobby Hopkins jump up and do a couple tunes after his set, which was I believe at the Seaport Grille. There is one more appearance by The Revival before the end of their Sunday residency at the Dogbar. Inge Berge will be kicking off his summer Sunday residency at Dogbar with his CD release party on June 20th.Monday night brings us to the Rhumb Line and the return of Monday Night Open Jam. Its hosted by Dan King and features many awesome professional musicians. This past week, The Bandit Kings were all present including Dennis Monagle, Joe Cardoza, Renee Dupuis and Ann Marie Shimanoski. They played some great tunes together and in pieces accompanying others, including some guitar work by Tony Goddess of Safety and Jenny Dee and the Deelinquents. His wife Sam Goddess (one of the Deelinquents) also got up and sang a bit. The Boyfriends were also in attendance including Ryan Alto, Joey Unis and Max Aprans. They jammed out a decently long set full of awesome covers including “The Weight” and some of their great original songs. Near the end of the evening I got up to play a few oldies with Joe and Dennis of the Bandit Kings backing me up along with a lead guitarist who’s name I missed (sorry!). Everything sounded great and everyone had a lot of fun dancing the night away. Check it out every Monday at the Rhumb Line!
Also I would like to mention on Mondays there is karaoke at Latitude 43 and its pretty hopping. This past week was the karaoke finals. That’s right, they have a regular karaoke competition which runs every five weeks. During the weeks leading up to the finals, karaoke goers can “qualify” and even earn Latitude 43 gift cards based on their singing and presentation. Every week there is a “winner” who receives a $25 Latitude 43 gift card, and for the finals $200 worth of Latitude 43 gift cards are given out. Its a really fun time hosted by Crazy Jay and Scottie Mac, two of the best karaoke hosts I know. Its a really fun time, there’s always a ton of cool people there. Its fun to hit up karaoke for a bit then finish out your night with the open jam once it gets cookin’. Latitude 43, every Monday, 9 PM.
Every Tuesday night at the Dogbar there is an awesome Open Mic Night hosted by the amazingly professional Steve Caraway. Recently a lot of awesome folks have been showing up including Dan King and Ann Marie Shimanoski of the Bandit Kings, Ryan Alto, Joey Unis and Max Aprans of the BF’s, Jim Buhrendorf, Pete Lindberg, Bobby Hopkins, Dan Harvey and Ryan Gibbs and many others. Its a really fun night and its been hopping lately. Definitely the place to be on Tuesday nights in Gloucester. Starts at 9 PM every Tuesday at the Dogbar! Come have fun!
Every Wednesday there is an open blues jam at Cameron’s that starts at 9 PM and is hosted by Blues Addiction. Its a great time with some fun performers. Cheap, strong drinks and plenty of TV’s to watch the game while you take in some great music. Its been picking up a lot lately so its worth checking out. Also on Wednesdays, the Dogbar is always a happening place, with the Pete Lindberg Band still hanging on to their slot. I’ve heard Pete has been trying a lot of new/different acts and accompaniment lately and he’s been writing some new songs, you should definitely go down and check him out too. Every Wednesday, Dogbar, 9 PM!
This past Thursday, The Revival had an impromptu jam with some special guests from Salem. The lineup was Peter Ryan, Megan Downey, Jacqueline Kamel and Patrick Fitzpatrick. Jesse Downey also sat in for a few songs before he had to go, and Brendan Connolly accompanied on keys for a song. It was really spur of the moment, we started pretty late and we were competing with the Celtics game, but it was a really fun jam. Jackie and Megan both have very beautiful voices, and along with keyboard, guitar and djembe, we managed to create a very unique sound. Played a wide variety of covers from classic rock to hip hop along with some original tunes. I think everyone had fun and I’m personally hoping for more opportunities like this in the near future. I hear The Bandit Kings will be picking up a couple of the Thursdays which have been left vacant due to Brian Alex having a more intense schedule with End Train for the summer. I can’t wait to see them play the Dogbar!
There’s always lots to do in Gloucester every night of the week, help support local music and local business! The big Fiesta weekend is coming soon, they’re building already. I’ve already heard that so many great acts will be performing! Of course Chelsea Berry becomes a rockstar on fiesta Saturday this year at the House of Blues in Boston with Pete Lindberg opening for her…but there’s plenty to do in town too! Stay tuned!
Fly Amero on The River 92.5 tonight
Special thanks to Cindy Sisco that tonight, Fly amero will be on The River 92.5 at 10:00pm Monday. The introduction starts around at 9:45. So, get your radio tuned for this event. They will also be mentioning Fly’s special guest for Wednesday Nights “Dinner with Fly” at The Rhumb Line too.

Music Around Town ~ June 7 – 13, 2010

I am wicked excited that the Monday night jam is back. I have to say that I loved hearing The Bandit Kings and Chelsea Berry over the past few months. They took the place of the jam and gave us some extraordinary music.
During these jams you get some magical moments from musicians that are there to let loose with no planned agenda. Thank you to Dan King for hosting this and to Fred Shrigley for making it possible.
