Affirmation of Life: Bold Color Fields and Kindred Spirits

Nell Blaine (1922-1996) described herself as “defiant in joy.” After being stricken by polio at age 38, she often put down “every color I have” on her plate glass palette. Highly regarded as a gestural colorist, Blaine persistently bridged the delicacy of intimate interiors and salient aspects of nature through Abstract Expressionism for most of the late 20th century.

CAPE ANN COLLECTORS autumn show, “Affirmation of Life: Bold Color Fields and Kindred Spirits,” opens October 17-18, 1-5 p.m., celebrating life, color and joy – an intentional nod to Manship’s “HOCKNEY REPRODUCTION(S)” radiating intense, joyful, expressive chromatic hues. New ways of seeing, feeling and creating drove both Hockney and Blaine.

Kindred spirits with screenprint, sharpened color and graphic force, Blaine and Hockney brought inclusion and immediacy to image-making. Leaping from a dedicated sketching practice, this modern representation floods CAPE ANN COLLECTORS’ main gallery. On display are new master works by Nell Blaine and Theresa Bernstein, alongside artists William Meyerowitz, Ethel Louise Paddock, and Erma Wheeler (all 55 works on view).
