City of Gloucester Trash Update 9/14/26

Attention Residents – Trash Talk!

Reminder that the new trash program starts October 1st. If you have not gotten your new trash carts already, don’t panic! Carts are being delivered on a rolling basis and you will get them before October 1st. They are being delivered right to the front of your property, so please keep an eye out for them! Please note that if you requested additional carts, their delivery may come later than the standard carts.

Later this month, we will have a form on our website for folks to fill out if they haven’t received their carts yet. Until then, thank you for your patience and remember to use up all your purple bags while you still can!

Pretty Light at Harbor Loop

When I encounter visitors during my shift at the Stage Fort Park Welcome Center, I usually recommend they take a walk down to the pier at Harbor Loop. This lighting is one of the reasons it’s such an attraction there.

The family of Cigar Joe Frontiero brings Good Morning Gloucester these treasured recordings of Fishing out of Gloucester MA in the early part of the century. I’m happy that the family entrusted GMG with these priceless recordings and am proud to be able to have the platform in which we can archive and share with the community.

Cigar Joe Frontiero born in 1898 these tapes were recorded in 1981 when he was 83 years old.

The history behind the tapes: Someone had asked Cigar Joe for an interview for an oral history project but Cigar Joe decided to do the recording himself. At the time he was having trouble with circulation in his legs and spent most of the time at home so he bought a tape recorder. He had trouble with the tape recorder and threw all of the tapes away. His mailman took the trashed tapes, spliced them, and made copies. He gave Cigar Joe copies and kept backups (with Cigar Joe’s consent) in case the originals were lost. This occurred in 1981.

In the Midst of the Wildlife — pat morss

It’s great when the local wildlife comes to us.

A young Osprey has taken over Hank (The Great Blue) Heron’s favorite branch near our house.
It departed and came back with a fish that it promptly devoured.
It could be one of Annie’s and Squam’s kids, Sunny or Stormy (seen on Essex Greenbelt’s Osprey cam).
Returning after a walk, a Garter Snake was chasing a House Mouse at our front door.
The snake headed the mouse off at a crack between RR ties, that was too narrow for the mouse.
So, off in a different direction with the snake in chase.
This continued until they both froze in place at a safe distance. I was betting on the mouse when we went inside.
Many Painted Ladies were feeding on our butterfly bushes. Upright wing undersides provide camouflage.
The open topsides are are bright like Monarchs. This butterfly is carrying on with a damaged wing.
Whereas, this one has near-perfect symmetry.
The proboscis (“straw”) that uncoils for the butterfly to sip nectar is pretty neat to watch.

The weather on Saturday was beautiful.  It should be illegal to be inside on days like this.  The Magnolia Pier and surrounding flowers look so pretty.

Fall Has Arrived at Marini Farms

Like it or not, we are at the start of a new season. September and October are fantastic months here on Cape Ann but Mother Nature is signaling Fall. It’s evident at Marini Farms in Ipswich.

September beach days

Grateful to live where the beach is always around the corner.  By wearing my bathing suit under work clothes, can get to the beach immediately after work.  The last couple of days at Magnolia Beach have been wonderful.  The temperature of the water was 68 degrees.  perfect for swimming.
