I’m adding a couple of photos to the great question about the mystery jellyfish Joey posted thanks to a GMG reader.

I saw them that same day on Long Beach, September 6, 2021. I only saw seven, and one was a piece rather than whole, so I can’t confirm hundreds were there.

The one in the photo with the sneaker was the largest I observed. They were hard to miss. Four were in proximity at that spot. On the other side of the beach, one group of kids scooped up a sample with a sand shovel, running back to the furthest Gloucester end to show their parents.

The two times I’ve seen lions mane on any beach, I was wrong. If these were lion’s mane this will be the third time they’ve looked like a different jellyfish to me. The beached jellyfish on Long Beach this week looked a bit like pictures I’ve seen of mauve stingers.

Everyone has been remarking how warm the water’s been, and these deposits followed Hurricane Ida. Storms bring in unusual gifts from the sea.

My name is Steve Quinn, and I am a member of Cape Ann Bible Church 8 Thompson St. In West Gloucester. This Saturday from 8 am till 1Pm we Will be having our annual Fling.

This is an out reach to our community, clothing , house wares, toys, electronics and some furniture. Everything is free for the taking to support those in need through out our community.

Its gotta be a dozen or more years running the men from Phi Kappa Sigma come down to Captain Joe’s for Rush week lobsters.

Tradition. Gotta love it!
If you’re a prospective pledge and you don’t go with PHI KAPPA SIGMA you really need to reevaluate your whole college existence.
Just drop out and become a garbage man already because you’re not college material.

Rush Phi Kappa Sigma At MIT!

The boys from Phi Kappa Sigma at MIT come every year for rush week to pick up a ton of lobsters to serve prospective rushees.

I thought MIT was primarily an engineering school but apparently they have their marketing down pretty good too!

Relaxing morning at Jones River Salt Marsh

I hadn’t been down to the salt marsh at the Jones River landing recently so I took a ride on a pretty day. It’s very peaceful and pretty there. Lots of bird activity which reminds me that I had posted some cormorants a while ago and called the ducks. Peter of Rockport wrote to let me know cormorants are their own species and are not ducks. I appreciate knowing this, especially since we are not birders as you all now know! I could not resist taking the “JimBoat” picture for our GMG Jim.

Cape Ann Museum’s Library & Archives reopening after closure and remodeling

Community Open House: Friday, Sept. 10 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Cape Ann Museum’s newly remodeled and repainted Library & Archives.

After 1 ½ years of being closed due to the pandemic, a completely remodeled and repainted Library & Archives is reopening at the Cape Ann Museum at 27 Pleasant Street in Gloucester next week. “We are thrilled to welcome the public the new and improved Library & Archives,” said Oliver Barker, the Cape Ann Museum’s Director. “The Museum has been working hard, with the help of our Volunteer Team, to make the space more inviting, accessible and functional in the ways the public needs.”

A Grand Re-opening event for members will be held on Thursday, Sept. 9 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Librarian & Archivist Trenton Carls will give tours of the new layout, discussing projects from the past year, displaying recent acquisitions, and sharing what is on the horizon for the CAM Library & Archives. There will be live music by local jazz musician Steve Lacey, light refreshments, and a small used book sale taking place in the atrium. The CAM Library Volunteer team will be on hand to discuss projects they have been working on and will answer any questions.

The public is invited to a Community Open House on Friday, Sept 10 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Throughout the day, Carls will be on hand to discuss the newly updated and reopened Library, showcasing recent acquisitions, walking visitors through recent digital exhibits and introducing many of the CAM Library Volunteers, without whom, none of this would be possible. On that day, there will be an encore  Community Conversations event with the CAM Librarian & Archivist at 1 p.m. to share changes and plans, and seek input from the community about how to make the CAM Library & Archives a welcome and useful resource to all. The Museum’s Librarian & Archivist Trenton Carls shared that, “This is the moment we have been looking forward to since last March. While we have been very fortunate to have had this past year to connect with the community virtually and by appointment, we are eager for everyone to come back in and enjoy this space and CAM’s incredible collections.”

Annisquam Village Church to Host a 9/11 Memorial

In remembrance of the 20th Anniversary of 9/11, the Annisquam Village Church at 820 Washington Street in Gloucester will be hosting a brief Memorial Service on the church lawn this Saturday at 8:30 a.m. This interfaith service will include prayer and reflection.  The church bells will ring at 8:46 a.m., to mark the moment that the first plane hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center. All are welcome to attend.
