The information about this building is incorrect. The past and present history needs to be researched. Example: The Experimental Church began in 1968 and is celebrating its 50TH. The building remains an active Church and exploration. The original building was built by the “Universalist” in 1886. It was sold to the Methodist Episcopal congregation about 1911. As stated the information in this post is incorrect. Rev. Richard Emmanuel
Thanks for writing! I see what you mean about the photo caption. I wasn’t meaning it to represent first occupant. I was sharing a rare photograph of the building showing before tower removal. I have never seen an image with the tower before. (Pringle, archives, and newspaper clippings various decades describe the fascinating history of Gloucester churches. The East Gloucester Methodist Episcopal Church –the fifth in Gloucester– was organized September 23, 1885 and built out by 1887. The seventh Universalist society in Gloucester was established in East Gloucester March 22 1884 and built by 1886.)
Love the history here thanks Catherine for sharing. One of our older churches in Lanesville is now a private residence 2006, but I do remember it well 1958 -1966 when I went to this Church crossing oneself as stated in the article oh so true.. 🙂 Dave & Kim 🙂
I went to that church as a kid. So glad to see the picture, with the steeple still intact. Thank you!
