The flash of polished bronze and gleam of varnished wood across the water will be the order of the day as elegant antique and classic yachts sail into the host city of Salem, Massachusetts for the 34th Annual Antique & Classic Boat Festival August 20-21, 2016. Mostly wood, primarily private yachts and aesthetically stunning, the vessels will be on display to the public over the weekend at Brewer Hawthorne Cove Marina. A hallmark of the Festival is the great variety of craft exhibited. “Where else,” says Pat Wells, Coordinator, “can one see 1900s-60s motor yachts, mahogany speedboats, sloops, yawls, schooners and a 19th century gold-leaf canoe! Although many of these craft are museum quality, they are real boats in the water and in use by their owners today.”

To the delight of the public, some skippers sport vintage garb; others display period décor or play a few tunes. Table settings and captivating floral arrangements might be found aboard a boat. Welcome mats are in evidence and children, pets and parrots have been known to enliven the scene. Many hospitable owners invite the public aboard for a personal tour, regaling visitors with tales of their boat’s history, memorable voyages and the joys and woes of restoring their classic.

Gloucester Stage Company proudly continues Playtime Stories, an engaging combination of children’s stories, live performances and activities for ages 2 and older, on Saturday, August 20 at 10 am with Guest Narrator Award winning actress Dossy Peabody joining the Playtime Stories company to narrate her grandmother Dorothy Kunhardt’s classics Pat The Bunny and Junket Is Nice; and the New England favorite, Robert McCloskey’s Make Way for Ducklings at Gloucester Stage, 267 East Main Street, Gloucester. The Playtime Stories offers young children the unique opportunity to experience the fun and magic of live theater as they watch their favorite books come to life onstage. Following the performance audience members will be invited to join the Playtime Stories Company in fun and interactive workshops relating to the story. Each Saturday the Playtime Stories Company, consisting of members of Gloucester Stage’s apprentice company, veteran Youth Acting Workshop students and special guest narrators  perform a children’s story against the backdrop of the story’s illustrations as well as create a dynamic weekly series of interactive events related to the story.

A North Shore native and Salem resident, Dossy Peabody is thrilled to join the Playtime Stories company  on August 20 to read her Grandmother Dorothy Kunhardt’s classic children’s books. Dossy Peabody was recognized in 1990 by the Boston Theater Critics’ Association with the very first Elliot Norton Outstanding Acting Award. At GSC she has created some of Israel Horovitz’s most memorable characters in his most successful plays including the Gloucester play, Park Your Car in Harvard Yard, and the Wakefield set, The Widow’s Blind Date . She has also appeared in many feature films including Mermaids, The Crucible and Amistad.

Dossy Peabody’s Grandmother Dorothy Kunhardt was the author of over 50 children’s book, including the legendary interactive book and one of the best selling children’s books of all time, Pat the Bunny which has sold over 6 million copies. She was also a historian, writing several books about 19th century America, including a well-known account of the aftermath of Lincoln’s assassination, Twenty Days. Ms. Kunhardt was the subject of the recent HBO Documentary. Living With Lincoln.

Each week Playtime Stories explores different stories ranging from classic fairy tales to new stories to works by local authors. Upcoming performances include: August 20: Guest Narrator award winning actress Dossy Peabody reads Make Way For Ducklings; Pat the Bunny and Junket Is Nice; August 27: Corduroy and Lily’s Plastic Purse. Gloucester whale research in Alaska: report from the field

15 blow samples, 1 delivery  by plane Northern Exposure-like (Alaska! ), and one eagle, not in distress:

“We were out on the water by 7:30 am yesterday, but it was still cloudy and raining so we were a bit down. We don’t like to collect Snot in the rain; droplets of rain in the dish could be Snot so we have to process every dish which is a lot of work for us and even more for the analysis lab.

By 10:00 am the skies cleared the seas started to calm down and the team worked like a well-oiled machine (albeit in a very small boat).  We collected 6 samples in the next 3 hours and then changed location close to Turnabout Island about 10 miles away.  The first thing we saw here was a bird in distress just off the shoreline, we sent up a drone and realized that it was not in distress but it was a bald eagle swimming shore with a fish so big that it could not fly.  It swam amazingly well and reached the shore successfully (with dinner).

The water around us seemed to be boiling with life and soon 4 whales turned up and were swimming less than one body length from the shoreline side lunging.  The footage we recorded is absolutely spectacular and we collected 2 more samples.

The day was saved by the fact we could charge our flight batteries all day from the boat batteries.  The previous day our inverted failed and we had a new one flown in (the same day) from Juneau (for $11) from Alaska Industrial Hardware & Alaska Seaplanes.  Only in Alaska!!

We had a chance to have 2 drone’s in the air, one recording the other collecting Snot. Our Inspire 1 drone’s worked flawlessly.

We finally pulled into the dock last night at 8:00 pm exhausted but elated with a total of 15 samples, stunning video footage of whale behavior and memories that will last a life time. Foggy this morning – but we are sure that it will soon burn off so we are heading out.”

CATA Student Bus Passes are scheduled to be sold in the Gloucester High  School Atrium on Wednesday, August 24, Thursday, August 25 and Friday, August 26 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.; Tuesday, August 30  from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Wednesday, August 31 and Thursday, September 1 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the Gloucester High School Atrium. Student Passes will not be available for purchase at the CATA office until after September 5.

The Pass Plus, Unlimited Semester (Fall or Spring) Pass and Unlimited Annual Pass will be on sale. Students passes are not valid for Danvers or Peabody malls. The Unlimited Semester (Fall or Spring) Pass and Unlimited Annual Pass are photo IDs and the student must be present at the time of purchase. The cost for the Unlimited Annual Pass is $200.00; the cost for the Unlimited Semester (Fall or Spring) Pass  is $100.00 and the cost for the Pass Plus is $25.00. All Passes are payable by cash or check. For further information, call the CATA office at 978-283-7278.

Get The Stromboli!  The crust in the Stromboli was outrageously good.  The Strawberry Cove Salad Delicious.  Solid Pour On The Drinks.

Vermont’s Milkhouse Heaters in Free Concert, Friday, August 12, 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm

The Milkhouse Heaters are a husband and wife duo. Mike Sheehy plays guitar and harmonica and Jan Sheehy plays bass. Both sing. They have a vocal harmony style that has been compared to Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons.
In the early days, Mike played bass while Jan sang lead and played guitar. They could often be found kicking around the Boston music scene. They received airplay on several of the city’s radio stations and were nominated for a Boston Music Award in 2001. They have shared the stage with The Black Crowes, Corey Glover, Fuel, Feeder, and Hum as well as playing the Boston leg of The Vans Warped Tour. Their songs are on numerous compilations alongside the likes of G. Love and Special Sauce, Jack Johnson, Burning Spear, and The Mighty, Mighty Bosstones.

This is concert seven in a series of nine free outdoor concerts presented by the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation.   The family-friendly concert begins at 6 pm. Bring a picnic, folding chairs or blankets. In case of rain, the event will take place inside the Meetinghouse (no food or drink permitted inside.) Donations will be accepted to benefit Art Haven.

Cape Ann Art Haven is a community space where children of all ages and abilities are encouraged to develop creativity and confidence through hands-on learning and collaboration.  http://www.arthaven.org/

Next Friday’s concert features the Deb Hardy & Alternate Root Band to benefit the Grace Center.

GLOUCESTER’S LITTLEST OSPREY ON THE ANNISQUAM PERISHES

With regrets, I am sorry to report that the Osprey fledgling has died. Don, whose property the nest is located upon, shares that he observed the Osprey Dad toss the nestling out of the nest. Don went to investigate and found the baby’s lifeless body lying on the ground. He placed it in a box and brought it to Greenbelt. Judging by the condition of the body, it was determined that the young Osprey was most likely killed by an owl.

On a positive note, Don and Eleanor’s Osprey pair will more than likely return to the same nest site next year. They are also thought to be a young couple. Hopefully the pair will hone their parenting skills and, quite possibly, have more than one fledgling on their next attempt. The growing recovery of Osprey to our region means that many things are going right; the improving health of our coastal environment, for example. 

Many thanks again to Paul Morrison and sister Kathy, and to Don and Eleanor, for providing this brief window to see the Annisquam River Osprey family. I am looking forward to learning and sharing more next year.

Community Sailing on Adventure

You know summer is fleeting by, so come sailing on Adventure while the weather is still perfect. The next two Saturdays, the 20th and 27th we are sailing from 2 to 5. It’s just $30 for members, ($60 for non-members so it is worth joining up). Because of the harbor dredging Adventure had to move from Maritime Gloucester, but now you can board the shuttle next door at Solomon Jacobs Landing for a short ride out to the ship. I’ll be on the crew both days, ask for me and I’ll show you the ropes, (yes, literally).
