Awesome video of Pier Jumping at Magnolia Pier

For some odd reason, somebody keeps barricading the kids’ favorite spot. This is creating an unsafe situation.  Generations of young children have learned to jump off the pier by being able to jump without having to climb the railing, which makes it a lot harder to learn — and way more scary too.  Whomever keeps barricading the jump spot, please remove the barricades.  Thanks!

  1. Pretty sure it is the city. Insurance /OSHA thing. They are not allowed to have it open anymore now that the pier is “on the radar”

  2. Pretty sure it is the city putting them up. Insurance /OSHA thing. Right up there with everyone having to remove their ladders, etc. Now that pier is “on the radar” the old days are no more. Will always be blocked from here on out is my guess.

    1. It doesn’t have to be that way — and it shouldn’t. For decades, Magnolia Pier has been a safe, healthy place for kids to hang together and get some exercise. Young children (4,5, 6-year-olds) could safely try a new challenge encouraged by parents, siblings and peers. Experiencing the thrill of success, they fall in love with their harbor, their pier, their town — and treasure the memory of their first jump for a lifetime. Teens gather in a safe place to revel in the summer fun. They teach their friends how to jump. When they’re grown they teach their kids. This has become a tradition just like the greasy pole. Kids wait all year for their “first jump!”

Now some spineless bureaucrat is gonna ruin all this — and by doing so encourage your kids to drink in the woods — or sit on the couch playing video games? NO. Don’t let that happen! Call your city Councillor, the Mayor, the DWP. They’ve created a dangerous situation by trying to fix a problem that doesn’t exist. Don’t stand for it. Take our pier back!

  3. OK, I’ll admit it (It’s Peter, not Vickie). I don’t like jumping off the railing, but I can jump off the pier itself just fine. When the only choice is to jump off the railing and I don’t do it, the kids make me feel old 😦

  4. Wait. You can jump without a railing in your way AND there’s a ladder on the float? My summers were spent with one skinned knee from flinging my leg over the edge of the float rail to haul my butt out of the water. My how things have changed! And note, you most certainly can play pier tag with railings in place!
