St. Ann School welcoming students from charter school
From school principal Michele Butler:
St. Ann School of Cape Ann is happy to accept qualified transfer students from the charter school. We are pleased to be able to offer a pro-rated, discounted tuition for Gloucester Community Arts Charter School students who meet our admissions criteria.
We offer a quality, affordable Catholic education, and we also value the arts. Our students recently performed at our annual Christmas concert, and they are currently in rehearsals for our talent show, which will feature individual and group acts from all grades.
We offer weekly art and music classes taught by professional educators who are also active in their own fields. Gemma Amero Flavin, a local artist, teaches art two days a week. Lori L’Italien, a choral artist with the Metropolitan Opera Guild, teaches music once a week.

Mayor Kirk and Ward 2 City Councillor Melissa Cox invite you to the first community meeting to plan the future of Burnham’s Field. Landscape architects from Weston & Sampson will present their assessment of the current conditions of Burnham’s Field and ask for your input on its future. Ideas under consideration include new walking paths, swings and playground equipment, better lighting and even a water play area for children.

Flu Clinic at Addison Gilbert Hospital
A free community flu clinic will be held at Addison Gilbert Hospital, 298 Washington Street, Gloucester, on Tuesday, January 15 from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. in the Cafe inside the Fisher entrance of the hospital. The clinic will be conducted by the Gloucester Health Department. There is no fee or pre-registration required. The clinic is available to those six months of age and older. Those attending are asked to wear short sleeves. All are welcome, you do not have to be a resident of Gloucester to attend; all are welcome.
It’s Not Too Late to Vaccinate!
Gloucester, MA- January 2013. The Gloucester Health Department encourages you to get
vaccinated against the flu, as flu season can go on until March or April and it is shaping up to be a bad year for the flu.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) encourages everyone 6 months and older to get
vaccinated against the flu. If you have not already been vaccinated the flu vaccine is now widely available and is still your best protection against the flu.
At the urging of the Mayor and the City Council, the Public Health Department is offering a free walk in flu clinic this afternoon Thursday January 10th from 3pm-6pm at its offices at 3 Pond Road.
In conjunction with Addison Gilbert Hospital we will also offer a flu clinic this Tuesday January 15th from 9am-11am at the hospital cafeteria. The clinic is free and open to anyone over 6 months of age who still needs a shot.
The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year, but good health
habits like covering your cough and washing your hands often can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Cover your mouth and nose.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
“We are taking the necessary steps to have adequate supply of vaccine available for Gloucester residents, especially our senior citizens and children.”, said Mayor Carolyn Kirk. “There is a lot of flu-like illness in Massachusetts right now, it’s important to remember that in most years, flu season doesn’t peak until February. This means it is an excellent time to get a flu vaccine. We urge everyone to get vaccinated to help stay healthy this season,” said Noreen Burke, Health Director.

Gina Fetting Baking At The Open Door
Hello Folks,
As of January 22 I will begin a volunteer program at the OPEN DOOR every Tuesday from 3-6. We will gather to bake desserts for our Community Meals program.
So,if you have a desire to create wonderful desserts for our guests let me know. If you don’t have the time to give but would love to contribute ingredients(butter,chocolate,coconut,etc) that would be awesome.
We feed at least 40 people a night and although the food is wonderful we need to make it just a little bit more special. To me there is nothing better then a great dessert.
We will also be making birthday cakes for any clients who come for dinner.
At this point we have two core people that will be there every Tuesday but if you want to join us let me know!
As many of you know Pastry has been my life and I want to share my passion with the Open Door,
I look forward to this new venture.

Community Stuff 1/11/13

I’ve seen the flyer for the Northeast Seafood Coalition/Cape Ann Brewing Co. beer and local seafood dinner on GMG, but wanted to provide more information for readers.
The Northeast Seafood Coalition is a non-profit organization based in Gloucester that represents groundfish fishermen in New England on policy and regulatory matters. We’re celebrating less popular (but very delicious) fish that’s caught locally and is sustainable.
The Cape Ann Brewing Co. and the Northeast Seafood Coalition are teaming up on January 15 at 6:30pm to host an evening filled with local flavors. We’re excited to offer a five course meal and each course paired with one of Cape Ann Brewing Co.’s fishermen’s brews. Plus fisherman and musician Paul “Sasquatch” Cohan will perform!
Now is a very important time to support local fishermen and NSC! The fish will be caught by local fishermen, and generously donated by Cape Ann Seafood Exchange. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Northeast Seafood Coalition, which will help NSC continue in our effort to find creative solutions that work to rebuild fish stocks while preserving family-owned fishing businesses, a diverse groundfish fleet and fishing communities across the Northeast.
Tickets for the 5-course meal are $50.00 and can be purchased by visiting the Cape Ann Brewing Co. or calling the NSC office at (978) 283-9992. We can’t wait to see everyone there!

MFers Dropping Like Flies
I’m shocked snd appalled.
Ordered up this tuna salad with Thai peanut dressing and there wasnt a single placard or mention on the menu reminding people to ask their server if the Tuna salad with Thai peanut sauce had peanuts in it for those poor folks afflicted with those sucky peanut allergies.
MFers are dropping like flies all around me. No doubt all from Massachusetts because obviously we need reminders on every table reminding people who have peanut allergies that they have peanut allergies. People are so backwards here on the islands.
I spoke with the manager and suggested they put signs on all the tables and menus to remind people with peanut allergies that they have peanut allergies but he looked at me like I had two heads. Hey, it’s his ass when the lawsuits come raining down on him from people with peanut allergies who order things that have peanuts in them because they weren’t reminded to ask their server if the food they were ordering contained peanuts. How could they be expected to remember to ask?
It’s only their life that hangs in the balance, Duh!

One of life’s great mysteries. ..
Inevitably every vacation no matter where the destination this scene plays out-
We set up on the beach, tip the guy to bring the umbrella and table set-up and settle in for a tough day. We walk to the most remote location early on not wishing to be on top of other folks.
And inevitably, like every single vacation t here will be some couple or family that despite having the entire beach and s ton of empty chairs decides to set themselves up 3 or 4 feet away.
It’s mindblowing. The Mrs just looks at me with that “Really”? look. An entire beach empty, at 3:45PM. Not like the whole beach was crowded all day long and everyone else left but us and them so that’s how it turned out that way. We were basically alone on an island and they decided to get all up in our space.
Must be Midwesterners that don’t get beach ettiquette, no?

First the skinny Jeans, Yoga Pants, Crouch Gusset pants and now there are Meggings. Meggings are: Meggings are real, and they’re getting an increasing amount of attention because of celebrities like Justin Bieber, Russell Brand and Lenny Kravitz. Proud “meggers” are all about them, though most shun meggings as an affront to masculinity. But could you pull them off? Celebrity stylist Ken Thompson shared his tips for pulling off meggings with The Australian. Men in meggings aren’t expected to travel “below the latte belt,” and he warns that early adopters of meggings need to take them seriously. “If you have to wear meggings, go formal on top with a crisp white shirt that is long enough at the front to avoid stares and make sure that you’ve had a decent calf workout,” Thompson told The Australian. There you go, folks. Lunch with Marty Luster
Marty Luster and I had lunch and a beer at the Seaport Grille on Wednesday. We don’t really know each other well, but in spirit we’re certainly aligned. He has a freakin’ ton of life experience, me only a fraction of that, but I’ve got lots of pro photo experience under my belt. In the two hours we spent at the table, there were never 3 seconds of awkward silence with nothing to talk about. After we finished eating, Marty ordered tea, and I asked if I could take his picture with his Fuji X100, which he is generously letting me test out. I have to confess – I practiced the basics of that camera beforehand, so I wouldn’t seem a fool. This is the 5th photo Fred had taken with this camera. So my picture tells the story: Here’s a guy who’s straight up, stand up honest, very smart, caring, generous, and would do ANYTHING for you. I KNOW this kind of person, and they’re ALWAYS from Gloucester. That’s Marty Luster.

Kid-Friendly-Music Wave Continues & 3 music videos
Weather forecasters call it a heatwave around here when it’s over 90 °F (32.2 °C) for three days in a row.
For the past 3 days, we’ve had good music starting early enough to take the kids out, so I’m declaring it a kid-friendly-music wave.
Tonight you can take the kids to see the Honky Tonk Women of Gloucester at Seaport Grille as early as 6pm.  And there’s plenty more later (see schedule here)  if you want to keep them up late, or you’ve got a sitter, or you don’t have kids.  One of our favorites, Pete Lindberg, is at the Dog Bar at 9.  Here’s a video of Pete at Celebrate Gloucester 2010:

It’s gonna be great night as we gather Bob and his wish list of heavy artillery in the form of Mr. Dave Brown, guitarist xtroidinaire, and Dave Mattacks, the Atomic Clock. If I miss a beat, he’ll find it. Rheumer has it that it’s someone’s special birthday (not mine), so we’re gonna pull out all the stops. Come and confess all your sins!
And don’t forget: The following Thursday sees the annual return of the saxophone solstice featuring the one and only “Sax” Gordon Beadle, the grim reaper of all cutting contests.

Is it strange that I enjoy writing on vacation at a beach destination?
I can’t tell you how psyched I am when I finish writing a post like the upcoming Poop vs Lysol post or the MFers Dropping Like Flies post or the St Lucia vs Turks vs Playa post. I get this great accomplished feeling.
I get to write while the Mrs is sleeping or reading her books all day long and don’t have the duty of work which allows me the time to write what I want to write.
Creators gotta create. I know my oldest, The Bean has this blessing/curse. You just have to be creating and if you don’t you get depressed. The Bean needs to be creating at all times while Snoop Maddie Mad could just chill all day long. Two very different children I have.
Like right now, it’s 7:29AM on Tuesday as I write this and I’ve already edited two prior posts that have been scheduled for future time slots. Been up since 5AM banging away and couldn’t be happier. While on vacation.
I don’t know what it is but just like the Bean, I’d go stir crazy just laying in bed when I could be creating.

I’ve spoken with EJ about this at length and I think it’s true for any creative person be it artist, musician, writer, photographer, even business people. I know there is not much more aggravating than being stifled when you have ideas and are kept from acting on them by time constraints, or for whatever reason. When a truly creative person is stifled it’s tough for them to feel fulfilled.

Speaking of origami boxes… and my upcoming class
This cool origami Jack-in-the-box was designed by Max Hulme.  I really like this design because it is structurally very clean and logical, and very effective, folded from a single uncut 2×1 rectangle of wrapping paper (15″x7.5″). The instructions are in Eric Kenneway’s “Complete Origami”, a really good book that I recommend.
