Waxing Gibbous Moon rose 2:15 PM today

2:15 PM this afternoon a waxing gibbous moon should have popped up just to the left of the Rockport breakwater in the photo. I got to chatting with some Brit geocachers at the end of the Pigeon Cove breakwater I was standing on and complained that my moon had not shown up. Maybe I screwed up the time change? Nope. Twenty minutes later it arrived out of barely visible haze. It’s directly even with the bow of the boat and about a boat length from the horizon. The color is all weird because I had to adjust the crap out of the saturation and temperature in iPhoto to even get it to show up.

I told the Brits when they were getting warmer on the geocache and they too found what they were looking for. I’ll try again closer to a full moon so the sun is not bleaching the moon out. Rubber Duck stayed home to finish off Fred Bodin’s pickled herring. I’m trying out a handfull of EJ’s Canadian Bacon leftover from the deviled eggs mixed with Beth’s chocolate covered pomegranate seeds. Wowiekaflowie that’s a tasty combo. Huge bennies throwing the Mug-Up today. Clean house and all the leftovers are mine mine mine.

Mug Up at R. Ducks (and Deviled Egg Recipe)

It was a great Mug Up this morning at R. Duck’s house in Rockport.  Food was plentiful as you can see from the photos, and R and Paul were in great form.  Check out the amazing smoked fish platter Fred Bodin brought, and there was a delicious apple cobbler that Greg Bover made, a bunch of other goodies that I don’t know who made or brought, and of course my now famous deviled eggs.  Most of the crew was there, although we missed regulars, Joey and Paul Frontiero, and it was great to see everyone.  Marty Luster, Kim Smith, Donna Ardizzoni and Shew were also shooting, so I’ll limit my shots to the food and let them show the rest.  Thanks Paul and Sue for hosting such an enjoyable Mug Up in your lovely home.

While there, Donna said she wanted my deviled egg recipe.  Since I don’t measure anything or use the same ingredients every time, a recipe is difficult, but here’s what I more or less do:

Hardboil a dozen eggs.  Peel, cut in half and remove the yolks to a bowl and mash.  To your bowl of mashed egg yolks, add about 3 tablespoons of mayonnaise (your preference, I use Market Basket brand), a tablespoon or so of spicey brown mustard and a couple tablespoons of horseradish sauce (sometimes I substitute creamy ceasar dressing), fresh ground pepper, dill, a dash of salt and 3 dollops of Louisiana hot sauce.  Mix up well, taste and adjust for your preference of devilishness.  Fill eggs.  I like to have a portion of finely chopped cooked bacon or Canadian bacon on hand for people to sprinkle on top if they like.

Deviled eggs are a great Thanksgiving appetizer, so whether you try my recipe or use your own, make deviled eggs for Thanksgiving and make people happy – everyone loves them (unless they are egg intolerant or vegan or just don’t like eggs).

So excited to get my GMG DropCam today!  There is still office space available upstairs with some of the most breathtaking views of GHB and Salt Island, so hoping the camera will reach to share that killer view, even better one floor up from me.  May need to contact the wonderful Mr. Tim Blakely of Gloucester Bytes for a wireless extender upgrade if needed.  Attached is a pic of him hard at work on the install of this amazing little gadget!  Thanks again for getting this going!
Also wanted to share these fun pics in honor of Halloween.  Dragons need to have their adjustments too, she’s roarin’ and ready to go after her visit!
Our next Cape Ann Healing Center workshops are coming up, drop-cam not streaming them live yet but planning that for spring with regularly scheduled stunning Cape Ann views in between.
Thanks again for all you do!

Barry Willdorf Asks About The First People To Surf Good Harbor

Barry Willdorf asks-

Hey Joey,
I saw your webcam of the surf at Good Harbor beach. I believe I was one of the first people to board surf there … 1963. Do you know of anyone who surfed there before then?

Photos – Sunday 10/30 at High Tide From Charles D. Erbafina

Hi Joey

I took these photos last Sunday and a Gloucester resident in my office suggested that I send them to you. The web site looks interesting and as a fairly new resident of Gloucester (4 years) I am sure I will enjoy the information in the site.

The photos were  taken at high tide on Sunday, the waves sounded like a jet engine as they were breaking.

Rubber Duck says: Make it fall

Sick of these green trees? Want everything to be Rubber Duck orange like fall is supposed to be? Just crank the “temp”.

Much better.

Mug-Up Sunday 10AM Returns

70 Phillips Ave (corner of Phillips and Haven Ave) in Rockport. Sunday 10am-noon. Don’t be a Homie and stay home with a chunk of herring. Gather with the FOBs of GMG for the really maybe the last Mug-Up of the year.

Homie and the Rubber Ducks

Rubber Duck has already got the fire going, set the clocks back and is dreaming of some cheesy sweet pastry that someone is creating in the kitchen tonight. With  or without something under your wing, stop on by.

January 1 when crazy people go for a swim is a Sunday! Sounds like a good Sunday Mug-Up is needed.

DOROTHY TALBOT MEMORIAL RINK RE-DEDICATION SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2011 AT 2PM

TIM THOMAS, RAY BOURQUE AND MILAN LUCIC MEMORABILIA RAFFLE
BRUINS LEGEND REGGIE LEMELIN WILL BE AVAILABE FOR AUTOGRAPHS AND PICTURES
PUBLIC FREE SKATE 2 TO 4 PM

The City of Gloucester is investing over $877,000 worth of much needed improvements in the Dorothy Talbot Memorial Rink. The improvements include a new roof, the replacement of the dehumidification system and the dasherboard system and as part of the city’s Green Buildings Program, a new low E ceiling will be installed in the spring of 2012.

People use the Dorothy Talbot Memorial Rink on a regular basis.  When going into the rink there is large green lettering above the door that reads the Dorothy Talbot Memorial Rink.  I’m sure some people never give a thought as to why this facility is named after her.

Dorothy Talbot was a wife, mother, grandmother, friend and loved the City of Gloucester.  Although she was born in Maine, she called Gloucester home.  Dottie was a professional accountant by trade working for many years on Lexington Avenue in Magnolia for K&M Business Services.  She was a member of St. Ann’s Parish, St. Joseph’s Chapel Guild, served on the St. Joseph’s Council and was a past chairperson of the annual St. Joseph’s Church Fair.  She was also a member of the Cape Ann Historical Association, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Friends of the Council on Aging.

From 1983-1987 she served on the Gloucester City Council and again in 1991.  During her tenure she was the chairman of the Finance Committee, served on the coalition for Affordable Housing Committee and was appointed by the Mass Municipal Association which helped advise the Governor on municipal problems and concerns regarding the local government.  She was also the co-founder of the Cape Ann Girls Softball League, coached the Magnolia Lions softball team, was a girl scout leader, a director of the Junior League Baseball and was equipment manager for the Lions Youth Football Program.

Her fundraising activities included years of work with the Magnolia Library, Magnolia Lions, St. Joseph’s Chapel and many other local charities.  In her memory a scholarship in her name was formed.

A family friend, the late Bill Rose gave the eulogy at her funeral.  A few comments he had regarding her was that she was a doer and was even better getting other people to do things.  She was the epitome of leading by example.  In his many years coaching the football or softball teams for the Magnolia Lions, he had quit many times only to be told by his good friend Dorothy that he couldn’t quit, she was the driving force behind the scenes and made us all better than we wanted to be.  Dorothy founded and led the Save the Rink Committee, a body created to insure public access to the O’Maley School sports facility.  She was very proud of keeping this facility open without using taxpayer funds.

After hearing the eulogy by Bill Rose, the late Mayor William Rafter was so impressed with her community activities, particularly the Save the Rink Committee that he recommended to the City Council that the O’Maley Rink be named in her memory and finally adopted by the City Council in 1992.

The rink has served the community well for the past 38 years and the actions by
Mayor Kirk, the City Council and School Committee to restore the Talbot rink will provide community access for another 40 years.  Our family is grateful that the rink has been renovated and is a testament to Dottie’s commitment to the youth and citizens of the City of Gloucester, a City she loved so much.   In conclusion a favorite saying of hers:

Do it Now ~ Talk about it Tomorrow!
