Lisa Kennedy of Defiance Sail Charters (www.defiancesailcharters.com) represents at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery on Rocky Neck.  Captains Raffi Kassabian and Lisa Kennedy operate charters aboard the 49′ Hinckley Windfall out of Gloucester in the summer, and the Bahamas in the winter.  Now, as Joey would say, “that doesn’t suck”.

Guided tours of Rocky Neck’s Historic Art Trail are part of the 100+ unique and FREE events taking place in the 10th annual TRAILS & SAILS, sponsored by the Essex National Heritage Commission. On Sunday, September 18 and Sunday, September 25 at 2 pm there will be guided tours of the Rocky Neck Historic Art Trail originating at the Rocky Neck Gallery, 53 Rocky Neck Avenue, Gloucester, MA.  The tours are conducted by Judith Curtis, a regular contributor to American Art Review and author of Rocky Neck Art Colony 1850 to 1950 among other works.

Walk in the footsteps of Winslow Homer, Fitz Henry Lane, Augustus Buhler, Frank Duveneck, Marsden Hartley, Edward Hopper and other greats in the history of American art.  Visit the sites where these famous Rocky Neck artists worked, lived and became inspired. See first-hand the iconic land and seascapes that gave rise to the area’s illustrious artistic legacy – and which today provide the backdrop for one of the country’s oldest and most renowned working art colonies. Two Weekends of Walks & Water

Celebrate 10 years of TRAILS & SAILS September 16-18 & 23-25, 2011. Plot your course to fun and adventure at http://www.trailsandsails.org and download your passport to over 100+ FREE, FUN and FAMILY-FRIENDLY events at various sites that showcase our distinctive regional heritage. All events are designed to give residents and visitors a taste of the region’s distinctive history, breathtaking landscapes and hidden gems.

Over 4,000 attendees are expected at this year’s TRAILS & SAILS. In addition to The Rocky Neck Historic Art Trail, events will include history and art walks; boat rides and paddles; farm tours, trail walks and rigorous hikes; behind the scenes tours; book readings and musical performances; vintage baseball games and a host of authentic activities. Most events will accommodate between twelve and fifty participants on a first-come, first-served basis with the exception of a few reservation-required events (see http://www.trailsandsails.org). The public is invited and all events are FREE.

The “Essex County Busting Breast Cancer Initiative” Offers a Free Presentation on
Lowering Your Breast Cancer Risk at the Rockport Art Association
(Rockport, MA) Learn inexpensive and healthy ways to lower your risk of breast cancer at a free presentation at the Rockport Art Association on 12 Main Street, Rockport. Join us for this lifechanging talk on Wednesday, September 14 at 7 P.M. Essex County residents (especially women between the ages of 40 and 50), will be taught three easy, inexpensive, healthy and effective ways to significantly reduce the body’s ability to develop invasive breast cancer. Admission is free.
This program is part of the “Essex County Busting Breast Cancer Initiative” designed to decrease the incidence of invasive breast cancer in Essex County through education and awareness. The Essex County Initiative is National Breast Cancer Prevention Project’s pilot program, for developing regional initiatives in areas with an extremely high cancer rate.

For art lovers, there will be the opportunity to own an original Charles Movalli oil painting,
which will be on display. The artist generously donated this painting in memory of Carleen
Muniz, a former Rockport Art Association artist member, who died of breast cancer in 2009.
Muniz was mentored by Movalli, and was a talented artist in her own right. Raffle tickets are $25.00 each and the drawing will be held October 23, 2011.
Charles Movalli is the son of artists in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Movalli became an art teacher, influential art editor and writer. But above all, he is a painter. His dramatic brushwork creates the vibrant lighting and sense of movement that has earned this Cape Ann artist dozens of significant awards, a listing in Who’s Who in American Art and memberships in prestigious art associations, including Oil Painters of America.

Tasty and fabulous appetizers will be provided by Grapevine Catering. Wine and water will also be served. Knowledgeable staff from Common Crow will be in attendance as well to present products that are beneficial in lowering breast cancer risks.  The National Breast Cancer Prevention Project, formerly Know Breast Cancer, was founded by Susan Wadia-
Ells, PhD. The organization is focused is on helping women to stop breast cancer before it starts, rather than focusing on detection and treatment. Wadia-Ells’ forthcoming book “Busting Breast Cancer” is based on international research over the past 5 plus years and will change the way the world thinks of breast cancer.
The Essex County Initiative is a project of the National Breast Cancer Prevention Project.

If you’ve always said you want to catch Mug Up at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester on Madfish Wharf, but haven’t yet (Jenn Cullen), summer is waning and there will only be a few more Mug Ups before we close up shop for the winter at 77 Rocky Neck.  So . . . come on over this Sunday at 10:00 and join us for some good food, company and conversation.  No one bites, except Paul Frontiero occasionally and not very hard, and its always fun.
