Overboard at Old Sloop

Overboard Performing at Old Sloop Coffeehouse

On Friday, December 10, a packed to capacity house at the Old Sloop Coffeehouse (at the United Congregational Church of Rockport http://www.rockportucc.org/oldsloopcoffeehouse.htm) was festively treated to the amazing a cappella voices of Overboard, a Boston based a cappella group.  Did you know that A cappella (Italian for In The Manner of The Church) music is solo or group vocal or singing without instrumental sound, or a piece intended to be performed in this way. A cappella was originally intended to differentiate between Renaissance polyphony and Baroque concertato style. In the 19th century a renewed interest in Renaissance polyphony coupled with an ignorance of the fact that vocal parts were often doubled by instrumentalists led to the term coming to mean unaccompanied vocal music. In modern usage, a cappella often refers to an all-vocal group performance of any style, including barbershop, doo wop, and modern pop/rock. Today, a cappella also includes sample/loop “vocal only” productions by producers like Jimmy Spice Curry, Teddy Riley, Wyclef Jean, and other producers.

Overboard also performed at the UUC in Gloucester on December 5, and will be performing on Cape Ann again on New Year’s Eve during Rockport’s First Night celebration, in case you haven’t had a chance to catch them and would like to.  You can hear them at http://www.overboardvocals.com/.  Also, check out Old Sloop’s we blink above for info on upcoming performances at their monthly coffeehouse venue.  It’s a great inexpensive night out, and they serve delicious home-baked goodies and beverages for only $1.
