I and Jeremy sent this to the Ray Lamont, Gloucester Daily Times, “Letter to the Editor”.:
Repeal Day December 2, 2010
To the Editor,
Seventy-seven years ago, December 5, 1933, marks an incredible day in the history of our country. On that day the state conventions ratified the 21st Amendment to our Constitution. Federal Prohibition laws or the 18th Amendment, known as the Volstead Act, was repealed. Utah was the final state needed for a three quarters majority vote to ratify via States Conventions. Mississippi was the last, remaining “Dry” until 1966.
The obvious thought is to celebrate that day as giving the right to drink back to the nation. Well, cheers to that. But the more important aspect in our view is that the country showed it has the tools and courage to make change. The “Noble Experiment”, prohibition, was enacted even over Woodrow Wilson’s presidential veto. It proved not to cure all of society’s ills, but among other negative results it helped to foster an incredibly sized illicit industry whose control was completely outside of the law.
Our point is not to minimize the problems associated with the misuse of alcohol or any other drug. Unfortunately, just about every family has been exposed in some way to those personal issues. We just want to remind people that positive change can occur from within the system.
So, this weekend, at 21:00 hrs (9:00 PM) raise a glass of your favorite beverage, be it milk, tea, wine, Cape Ann Brewery’s locally crafted Fisherman’s Brew or Ryan & Wood’s Gloucester Distilled Spirits, and toast to the 21st amendment and our right to be governed by the people, for the people!
