Black Crowned Night Heron

Over the past ten years or so we’ve seen a big time increase in the number of strange birds like this down and around the harbor.  I don’t know what to attribute it to but between the egrets, and herons and snowy owl, it’s becoming a bird lover’s paradise.  With my average camera I just didn’t have enough lens to capture this guy from the distance I was shooting with great clarity.  If you are a bird lover or wildlife lover you owe it to yourself to check out Steve Borichevsky’s Shooting My Universe and Jim Barber’s Jim B Media

These guys are pros with great equipment and steady hands to capture some incredible birding shots.

Bob Grover’s ’38 Roadster

38 Ford Roadster

My brother-in-law Bob Grover and my sister Pat just picked up our mother in Bob’s ’38 Ford Roadster. My mother, who turned 80 in March, thought it was great! The car was used in a advertisement photo shoot last week. Very cool!

Windmill On The Harbor

You’ve got to be kidding me.

Liberals won’t fight it because it would look like they weren’t  “green”

Conservatives won’t fight it because it goes against them being in support of business.

So it looks like we will end up with huge visual pollution on the waterfront.

A 250 foot tall windmill right down in the inner harbor is going to look ridiculous, lol.

This from the same company that stopped carrying lobsters at their supermarkets because they called it inhumane to hold them in tight quarters (or something ridiculous along those lines)

Whole Foods Bans Sale of Live Lobsters

Is a two million dollar windmill really going to pay for itself?  Or is Gloucester going to be used in a green marketing campaign to show the rest of the country that Whole Foods Is a green company even though it doesn’t make financial sense.  Judging by what they did with press releases during the ridiculous banning of the sale of lobsters because they don’t like them being kept in tight quarters, I fear it’s more about marketing and less about the real financial or green impacts of the ginormous (it’s a real word now) visual pollution that will be erected and loom over our harbor.

You gotta give them credit though, if they give the fishermen a payout we will surely end up with this thing stuck up our ass.

Why should we even have building codes with height restrictions?  250 feet in the air is what, seven times higher than the current building codes at that location?  Fuck it, we might as well build high rises while we’re at it.

Kudos to the Whole Foods Marketing Team- they’re no dummies.

Visitors Welcoming Center Tour Part V

I ran into these two crazy birds at Janis Lufkin-Shea’s Cormorant shop.  They had me rolling.   Watch for the video later this week.

Topside Grill Pulled Pork Sandwich To Go

Off for a ride…Determination

So last week I had to get off my 3rd blood pressure medication. It’s baffling the doctors because I have undeniable side effects. At a party yesterday I was talking to Dave and Chris Curley who are training to do the 175 mile MS ride in the near future. We got talking about cycling which I used to do a lot.  This morning I start a mission to lower my blood pressure by getting out there and riding around our beautiful city. I’ll start off slowly and work up to a Newburyport ride by summer’s end and hopefully it will give me all the benefits of regular exercise.

Now that I’ve posted it here, it makes my commitment official. Wish me luck!

Gloucester Zen XXVII – Harbor Cove

minimal editing-minimal commentary-just a slice of time in g-town

Gloucester At Dawn-Razzo 4:45AM 5/23/09

The sunrises have been spectacular the last couple of mornings.  I know it’s early for anyone who doesn’t need to get up for work but being all alone on the streets makes you feel like you kinda own the city.

Lobsterman Truck Series- Harrison Golden’s Dodge Pick Up

Here is Harrison Golden and his Dodge pick up truck.  It’s the mini version which is probably all that 90% of Gloucester Lobstermen need.  Most Gloucester guys pull up to the dock to put their bait aboard so they don’t need to lug a ridiculous amount in the back of a truck.  Here Harrison is picking up a box of bait in his truck however because he is going to bait his traps that have been in storage during the winter.  He will bait them on shore and then load them onto the boat.  Once he has all his lobster gear set he will pull up to the dock to pick up his bait like most everyone else.

Would you look at the mitts on this guy?
