Vote For Mark And Ernie

Just got an email from Mark Teiwes.  Ernie Morin and Mark are both entered in The 2008 Boston Art Awards.

Mark Entered his Faces Of  The Working Waterfront which was shot here in Gloucester and still on display at the Dock. Ernie has “Sight Lines” entered. Give them your votes if you dig the work.  They both have my votes that’s for sure.

This from Greg Cook-

“Below is the ballot for the 2008 Boston Art Awards, a contest organized by The New England Journal of Aesthetic Research to honor the best art made in New England (excepting Connecticut) and exhibits organized here in 2008. And you are invited to vote. You!

The ballot is long. Crazy long. More than 60 people contributed some 190 nominations for the 2008 Boston Art Awards. Yes! The process was designed to be open to all, democratic and broadly representative of our community. The resulting ballot – which includes nearly all the nominations – is somewhat messy, despite my best sincere efforts to give it clarity. Ah, democracy!

Winners will be chosen by (1) local active art journalists and (2) anyone else who wants to vote – and will be announced in terms of these two separate categories of voters.

How to vote:

Voting is open to all. So feel free to pass along this message. Voting will be by e-mail. Vote for just one nominee in each category. Be clear. List each category and then your vote in each category. I suggest copying the ballot into an e-mail, and deleting all but the stuff you’re voting for. It’s okay to vote for yourself – everyone’s doing it. You don’t have to vote in every category. Of course, you may only vote for stuff you have seen. And you may only submit one completed ballot. Anyone breaking these rules will be banished. Email your votes to bostonartawards@gmail.com. Put “Vote” in the subject line.

The deadline for the receipt of votes is 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23, 2009. Late votes will be ignored.

The New England Journal of Aesthetic Research will tally the votes. Nominees with the most votes in each category will win. The 2008 Boston Art Awards Ball is being planned by the kind folks at Big Red & Shiny (thank you) – details will be announced shortly, but it’s looking like it will be in Boston on Feb. 2, and free and open to all. Mark your calendars, because I hope to see you there. Winners will be announced by early February. Stay tuned.

Please contact me with any questions, suggestions, complaints, corrections, dire warnings. And please vote.

Gloucester At Dawn- Dragger Elizabeth Covered In Ice

So yesterday we got back from South Beach and my In Laws picked us up in the nice warm car.  We went in to our warm house and spent the afternoon and night playing with the little ones.

This morning at 4:45 AM I took a swing through town and saw The Elizabeth, a dragger all covered in ice and thought it would make a good set of pics for the blog.

I got out of the truck with the camera and walked down the ramp at Rose’s Marine and started snapping.  Well wouldn’t you know that in all my excitement of having a nice subject to photograph within minutes I couldn’t feel my fingers.  Yuck!  Now I remember why winter sucks so bad.

Things To Do- Go See Barbara Koen Tonight!

This just in from Dian-

Hi Joe,

I still love hearing about Gloucester way up here in beautiful Carlisle, and look forward to every newsletter.  I can almost hear the ship’s halyards clanging from here!
On another note, Barbara Koen, of Dress Code fame on Main Street in Gloucester-shire will, once again be performing at my venue – Union Hall World Music & Dance Coffeehouse, 27 School Street in Carlisle, MA., inside The First Religious Society, this coming Saturday, the 17th of January.  Show time is 7:30 p.m., and she’s opening for Luminescent Orchestrii, a Gypsy tango klezmer punk acoustic string band from New York City, whose music balances frenzy and finesse.  AWESOME!
As you may remember, Barbara opened to a sell-out crowd at Passim in November, and it would be wonderful if you could put her and this ad in your newsletter.  We’d all appreciate it very much; especially Barb.  Many thanks, and Happy New Year to all!

Old School vs New School- You Decide

Fashion Victim Clothing

There were countless stores along Washington Street and around South beach selling this type of club wear fashion.   Certain young guys can pull it off in the right setting but to me 99.9 percent of the guys wearing clothes like this are tragic fashion victims.  The kind of fashion victims like the guys in the eighties that wore parachute pants and had flock of seagull haircuts.

The absolute worst though is when you see forty year old white guys trying to pull this look off.  Every time we would walk by one I’d squeeze The Mrs’ hand and she would know exactly what I was thinking- “Fashion Victim”

Note to all you guys out there- Flaps on the back of your jeans pockets and rhinestones=bad.  Don’t be another victim.

South Beach Alley

One Block From Some Of The Most beautiful Places To Be.  I guess to some people it may be beautiful too, like the Birdseye Plant.

Ocean Drive Cigars

See the guy standing on the roof?  He looked like a character straight out of The Sopranos.

I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter

I don’t know what’s more disturbing, the tshirt or the look on the mannequin’s face, lol!

Can you imagine Janice having this set up in the window at The Cormorant Shop?

Outdoor Dining On Ocean Drive

I was reading a book about the revitalization of South Beach and it said a big part of that revitalization was the widening of the sidewalks to accommodate the outdoor dining.  The Block Parties last summer were a testament to how great a scene it was when we allowed the restaurants this ability.

Things to do with the Kids

So cold out there! Stay inside, watch a movie, or cook up something with the kids, or you can venture out and keep warm at one of these events or programs happening around town.

Lobsters In South Beach

It was good to see many of the restaurants had lobsters .  What was even bettter was that they were leading with them as specials for not a ton of money.  One fancy outdoor cafe had a lobster dinner for $15.99  While a low price isn’t great for fishermen, it’sgood that the product is getting good visability so when the economic downturn les up people and chefs still have lobster on thier brain.

Now here’s a store that really appreciates it’s customers.

$1795.00 FU@K Sunglasses

$1795.00 FUCK Sunglasses, originally uploaded by captjoe06.

I saw these sunglasses in the window of a Lincoln Road shop so of course I had to pop in to take a pic for you guys.

Wel I had to look semi-interested in purchasing them so I asked the nice salesperson to take them out of the window so I could try them on.

It should be stated that even if these shades were $10 I wasn’t buying them. Not because they said FUCK, but because they were pretty gaudy even leaving the FUCK off of them.

But you know I wanted that pic so after trying them on I asked the nice girl how much they cost. She replied unflinchingly- “Seventeen ninety five.”

I wish I would have have asked her back “Lira?” or “Pennies?”
but I wasn’t quick enough. I had to know if she was serious and asked her if I heard her right that they cost $1795.00

She confirmed that yes they did indeed cost that much with a serious look on her face.

I just handed the FUCK sunglasses back thanking Christ that I didn’t break ’em.

Look for the video Saturday
