The Maine Lobsterman-From The DC Traveler

In Washington DC there is a statue of a Maine Lobsterman.

From what Jon Rochetti writes, the statue was controversial for a couple of reasons.

One, it is a statue of a man pegging a lobster placed in the heart of crab country. Two the lobsterman is shown kneeling down to peg the lobster (in all my years at the dock, I’ve yet to witness this). Three, the lobsterman wasn’t weearing traditional Sou’wester oilskins which I guess bothered the Maine lobstermen it was supposed to represent.

It’s too bad that the artist who was commissioned to build the statue either didn’t consult with some actual lobstermen or didn’t listen to the ones he did talk too.
