Hey Joey – Annual Pumpkin Carving Contest on Saturday afternoon! If you could get this out for us that would be awesome 🙂 Open to all ages – we’ve got pumpkins and fall snacks, just have to bring a costume and fun ideas!
My View of Life on the Dock
One of the scariest and most influential horror films of all time, this 1925 silent film classic features Lon Chaney in the title role as the deformed Phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House, causing murder and mayhem in an attempt to force the management to make the woman he loves a star. A gorgeous new print of the film has been carefully restored to the intricate color scheme of the original release. The Alloy Orchestra performs a new score on the Shalin Liu stage for this “ghoulish” Halloween screening.

The members of the Alloy Orchestra group include (left to right) :
TERRY DONAHUE (junk, accordion, musical saw, vocals)
KEN WINOKUR (director, junk percussion and clarinet)
ROGER MILLER (keyboards)
Hot Tip: Features Roger Miller from Mission of Burma. Kathy Chapman gives this this unsilent cinema experience a 6 out of 5 stars!

Cape Ann Restaurant Week 2011 will feature a variety of menus from many different restaurants throughout Cape Ann. Each participating restaurant will offer a prix fixe, three course dinner for the low price of $25.11 (price does not include beverage, tax, or gratuity). Dinner will include an appetizer or salad, three entree choices, and dessert. There are four days left so stop cooking and get to Cape Ann for dinner. For restaurant and menu information, go to www.CapeAnnChamber.com/RW.

The Essex Division of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the twenty-ninth annual Essex ClamFest on Saturday, October 22nd (rain date: Sunday, October 23rd), from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Shepard Memorial Park in Essex.
The highlight of the day will be the Clam Chowder Tasting, a competition that pits area restaurants against one another to determine who serves the best chowder on Cape Ann. Many of the area restaurants are expected to serve up their favorite chowder recipes starting at 12:00 noon and ending at 2:00 p.m. The public (for a nominal fee of $5 per person) will also have the opportunity to sample and vote on their favorite chowder.

Hi Joey,
I haven’t seen any press on this, so I thought you might want to let people know that the new residents of Hammond Castle are looking to have guests for dinner — literally! The Castle is open this weekend and next for a bloody good time!
Just a note to those who go – parking seems to be an issue, so for everyone’s safety please park at Stage Fort Park (Free!) and take the free shuttle to the castle.
Enjoy!

The organizers of Rockport’s Harvest Fest do an AMAZING job with activities for every age group. This undoubtedly will be at the very top of the must do list Saturday October 15th!
Here’s the presser-
Downtown Rockport will come alive on Saturday, October 15th with the sights, sounds, and tastes of Autumn in New England. The annual Rockport HarvestFest celebration features the best of the season in a quintessential coastal New England setting, offering live music, great food, and plenty of activities for families. Hayrides, pumpkin-painting, even a unique costume parade called “The Great Scarecrow Chase” will all be part of the festivities, not to mention the opportunity for children to make their own guitars through a workshop sponsored by Rockport Music.
As HarvestFest celebrates the bounty of Fall, it only seems appropriate that the centerpiece of the festival is the Local Fare Fair, where New England food producers gather under a huge tent on one of Rockport’s historic working wharves to celebrate the best of local food. Lobsters provided by the Roy Moore Lobster Co. will be under the big tent as well as chowder, cider doughnuts, maple sugar products and a host of seasonal and year-round favorites. Cape Ann Brewing Co. will be on hand with their award-winning locally crafted beer, the highly anticipated Pumpkin Stout on tap. Cooking demonstrations will also be highlighted, with the Seafood Throw down – a competition-style showcase between two chefs – showcasing just what can be done with coastal New England’s most significant harvest: fish. HarvestFest also features the annual Scarecrow Stroll, where artistic, creative, and generally fascinating scarecrows can be found throughout downtown.
Festivalgoers have the chance to vote for their favorite scarecrow, with the winner taking home glory and a coveted HarvestFest rosette. Live music, featuring everything from indie rocker Brad Byrd to the Americana of Daniel Dye & the Miller Road Band to bluegrass to Rockport’s own Legion Band, will be heard throughout downtown, with Dock Square serving as the main stage. Several Rockport inns, shops, restaurants and galleries are offering HarvestFest specials and packages. Go to: http://www.rockportartfestivals.com for more details. Don’t miss the chance to celebrate the best of New England in the Fall!

Everyone Knows Pete Marston as a Friendly Fun Guy.
Friday Night his friends and family will celebrate his life with an all star local musical cast and plenty of food. Bring a dish if you would like to and any pictures you have of Pete to share.
Linda Amero writes-
It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of East Gloucester’s Peter Marston (of Peter & Annette) on Wed. morning following a short cancer-related illness. Peter was a long-time, invaluable employee at Seatronics, a loving husband, father & grandfather. A very gentle soul who will be greatly missed in the community. There will be a celebration of his life (party!) and gathering of friends and family as follows: Friday, Sep 23, 6:30p at the American Legion, Washington St., Gloucester. Potluck, photos and musicians/instruments encouraged. This was a much-loved guy… let’s give him a huge send-off!

Swing by the Gallery at 77 Rocky Neck Ave gallery G3 (On Madfish Wharf)
Meet lots of your favorite GMG personalities and enjoy free coffee, pastries and EJ’s killer deviled eggs. Bring some pastries if you would like but it’s not mandatory. Sometimes Paul Morrison even graces us with Monkey Bread!

On Sunday, September 18th during Mug Up, we will be holding the First Annual Lobster Roll Competition. Judges for this competition will be Sista Felicia (we all know what an awesome cook and foodie Felicia is), Wendie Demuth (who grew up working for her father’s lobster business and ate huge amounts of lobster, prepared in every imaginable way), Brenda Hill (food judge for the International Food, Wine & Travel Writers Association, author and freelance writer from FL, originally from Gloucester) and Kim Smith (butterfly garden and lobster roll expert, who’d better show or Ed Collard gets her spot). The lobster roll competition will be fierce and require special handling, so we need to have an idea of the number of entrants in advance. Bun grilling can be done here at the gallery just before the entry goes to the judges, so entrants only need to bring a batch of their filling (hopefully enough to share a little with everyone after judging is complete) and their buns of preference. If you are planning to enter, please reply post on the blog, or if you want to be more secretive, you can email me at khanstudio@comcast.net. You might also want to put in a reservation early with Joey at Capt. Joe & Sons for your lobsters.
12:00PM Sunday
Runners (and those interested in running),
An email will be sent out to all registered runners sometime tomorrow in regards to the final race details. I will outline some important points below for anybody who doesn’t feel like waiting for the email. This year’s Lone Gull 10K will in fact be its final running. It has been a great five years and I really want to thank all of the runners, volunteers, sponsors, and most of all my family for helping and putting up with my September stress! So here are some details for the race:
1) Pre-race packet pickup is available at New England Running Company on Friday (10-7) and Saturday (9:30-6).
2) You can pickup your numbers and shirts on raceday starting at 7:30 AM at Good Harbor Beach.
3) You can sign up for the race on raceday.
4) There is plenty of free parking available at Good Harbor Beach.
5) We will not be holding on to shirts that have not been picked up so after the race it will be on a first come, first serve basis.
6) Good luck to all runners!!!!!
