“I AM TOUGH AND DEDICATED.” WATCH THIS WOUNDED MARINE’S STORY OF RESILIENCE

For more than two years, Rockport-based artist Thi Linh Wernau has been photographing a series titled, YOU. ARE. BEAUTIFUL. It is a project that celebrates the human spirit and beauty in our wounded veterans. It honors the sacrifice of our wounded veterans, empowers them with a platform to share their voices and inspires and helps other vets.

Thi recently dove into the world of video and filmmaking with a passion and desire to share these veterans’ voices in new ways. Please view her documentary short film (13 minutes) featuring an interview with Marine and wounded combat vet, LCpl Nick Eufrazio, USMC (retired) of Plymouth, MA. You will learn more about Nick’s spirit and who he is as a person through the eyes of his family and caregivers, as well as through his own eyes.

Thi Linh Wernau’s "You Are Beautiful" Exhibit Review from James Eves

Hi Joey,

Anna and I went to Thi Linh Wernau’s “You Are Beautiful” exhibit at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center this afternoon. On the way over, my mind was wandering with work stuff and other concerns. However, from the moment I stepped into Thi Linh’s world  I was moved by beauty in people, all people. Her art has a profound affect on any who experience it. Walking into the Cultural Center I was impressed by her overall presentation. She has such attention to all details of her work. Like the other patrons in the gallery I took my time with each piece of art. Marveling at the beauty in her photography and the statements of her subjects. I am impressed that many of the people Thi photographed were strangers to her at first and how much they gave of themselves. She has a way of creating intimacy immediately.

This weekend she is inviting visitors to participate in her “You Are Beautiful Polaroid Project”. We found Thi downstairs where she’s set up a photo studio. Anna and I decided to participate in her project. Thi had us make our own “You Are Beautiful” sign and write a statement of why we are beautiful. Coming up with the statement was harder than you might think. Thi takes two polaroids of each person; one she keeps for her project and the other she presents to the participant in a beautiful black box. I  was thrilled by the experience of participating in her art.

I am looking forward to going back in the coming weeks for the other events she has planned.

Rocky Neck Show Features You. Are. Beautiful. Photographs

joe with a brass earring

The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck is presenting a solo exhibition of 30 photographs by Thi Linh Wernau, a Rockport-based artist and photographer. The work is from Wernau’s project “You. Are. Beautiful.,” featuring portraits which celebrate the human spirit and beauty in all people. The show opens on October 24 and runs through November 11.  It will feature four events during the three-week period.

Stop in this weekend, Saturday-Sunday, October 26-27 from 2-4 PM, for the photobooth event. You can have your polaroid portrait taken by the artist, and your voice can become part of the project.  You will receive one polaroid portrait to take home and one image will be added to the polaroid installation in the gallery.

“You. Are. Beautiful.” depicts portraits of everyday people with grit, grace and gravity. A wounded Marine and amputee, a stage-three breast cancer survivor or a skater are all celebrated for their own beauty and spirit. Wernau created this body of work from her travels photographing strangers and a few people she knew. The artist asked all of them to complete the statement, “I am beautiful because…” Moved by the power of a simple phrase, Wernau also included the phrase “you are beautiful” into each person’s set of portraits. Wernau’s primary mission with this project is “to spread love and kindness.”

Come Support Injured Veterans on July 8…You’re Invited!

Dear Cape Ann Community,

Last week, Joey C. kindly posted information about my special art and charity event called, "You. Are. Beautiful. – A Tribute to Warriors."  I’m hosting the event at Minglewood Tavern in Gloucester on Monday, July 8 at 6:30pm.  This week, I’d like to share a little more information on who we are doing this for, and I hope you will attend.

This is a photo of CPL Todd Love, a Marine and triple amputee who served in Afghanistan with the 1st Recon out of California.  He was injured on October 25, 2010 when he was the point man on a foot patrol and triggered an IED.  He suffered the loss of both his legs above the knee and had severe damage to his left hand, resulting in amputation.

I reached out to Todd recently on facebook because I wanted to photograph him for my "You. Are. Beautiful." project – a celebration of the human spirit and beauty in all people.  In this project, I photograph all different kinds of people, but I especially honor veterans because I feel what they do is one of the ultimate tests of the human mind, body and spirit.

toddLove

Todd has an amazing spirit and does all kinds of things that will amaze you.  He plays Bach on the piano with one hand, wrestles alligators, jumps out of airplanes, competes in X.T.R.E.M.E. sports competitions and much more.  All with 1 limb and a crazy positive attitude.  Todd loves the "You. Are. Beautiful." project, but as you can see, he’s pretty busy for this year, so unfortunately, I won’t be able to photograph him soon.  But he was so kind even through our facebook communication, and I wanted to share his story.

Todd is 1 of over 9500 post 9/11 injured combat heroes helped by the Semper Fi Fund, a non-profit organization I am raising funds for through my art work and events.  I chose Semper Fi Fund as my charity for this summer because some of the injured veterans I have talked to speak so highly of them.  In my conversations directly with the Semper Fi Fund, I can only echo this sentiment.  I feel they treat each of the injured veterans they help as if he or she is their own child.

At the event on Mon, July 8, I will be showing art work from five of the veterans I’ve photographed to-date, four of which are from Massachusetts.  Each of them has connections to wounded warriors, either because they themselves are wounded or because they continue to help other veterans in so many different ways.  I hope you will join me to say "thank you" and help me in reaching my goal of raising at least $2000 for the Semper Fi Fund through this special event.

If you cannot attend, you can still donate!  For details and to buy tickets, please visit:

Thi Linh Wernau
