When I started to come here in the early 90s the renovation boom had just kicked off. I remember going through some open houses for hotel-condo conversions which were selling for $60,000. What I didn’t remember back then was the sheer number of hotels in the Art Deco district. There are probably twenty more going through revitilization as we speak and many many have already undergone transformations. I was reading a book about the early 90s revitilization and it was quoted as saying that rooms on Ocean Drive in 1976 could be had for $5. That was of course when you would not have wanted to be here and it was a dangerous place.

it’s tough to get an idea of the scale of this sofa and chairs from this picture. I wish the Mrs was sitting in them so you could get an idea of hof massive they were.
This picture does not represent the proper light in the room but it really was beautiful in a funky eclectic sort of way.

I can’t attest for the rooms as I didn’t get past the lobby, but the decor was sexy as hell. Those Victorian style chairs were way oversized. I’ve never seen such bold statements in decor in person. The only thing that might have come close was Graceland as far as over the top design in a small space.
It’s not demure, it’s not understated, they went for it in a big way. This probably wouldn’t work in too many places but it works here in South Beach.

The Whitelaw Hotel looks pretty nondescript from the outside but once you step foot inside it’s a visual feast.

This is the scene up and down Ocean Drive although at dinner time most of these seats are filled through the night. It’s loud and festive and each restaurant has its own vibe with different styling and menus. It’s very eclectic with tons of shopping one block back on Collins Ave and then a little wilder a street back from that on Washington. Lincoln Road Mall is where many artists and fine restaurants have set up shop. Lincoln Road Mall is an open air strip with a courtyard in the middle of two long rows of funky store fronts and cafes.
South Beach At Dawn- Service Alley, originally uploaded by captjoe06.
As beautiful and funky as South Beach is, the service alley behind the hotels are shady as hell. This is about as far down this alley I’m gonna walk in the name or art.
As soon as we checked in we grabbed lunch at The Pelican, not cheap but always fantastic. Highly recommend it. The rest of the day was spent at the beach where The Mrs read and I napped. Dinner we walked down to Lincoln Road and dined at Sushi Samba. Sushi Samba is an Asian/Peruvian/Brazilian fusion place. I The Mrs said it was ok and I thought it was just a bit better than ok. The service all the way around since we’ve been here has been fantastic.

Here’s our hotel, The Beacon. It’s nice, I’d say it’s a three and a half star hotel with a five star location and very friendly staff. Most rooms on South Beach are old hotels that have been renovated and they’re all over the map as far as how tastefull or how much money they pour back into the joints. They did a fine job at the Beacon with flat screens tvs and new tile. It’s not extravagant but just fine for the Mrs very finicky tastes.
