I couldn’t resist taking a selfie with this newly emerged Monarch after she at first fluttered onto my shoulder, flew to my hat, and then decided to stay for a bit on my neck.
Butterflies have sharp crochet-like hooks at the bottom of their tarsi (butterfly name for feet) and it feels a bit pokey when they land on your skin. The hooks enable the butterfly to grip securely to surfaces. During a strong wind, the hooked tarsi are all that is keeping the butterfly grounded.

Alice Curtis made this selfie in her bedroom mirror about 75 years ago. It probably wasn’t Gloucester’s first selfie, but I’ve never seen an older one. Today’s selfie is defined as taken with the photographer’s arm, and no mirror, tripod, or self timer used. Some say a cell phone camera must be used. I say hogwash, and enjoy the photographer who made 7,000 of my historic negatives. Alice was a pioneer in many ways.
Thirty five and some years later, about 1975, I photographed my maternal grandmother, Jennie Lee (Mitchell) Scales reflected in her bedroom dresser mirror. I think the comparison of the two photos is amazing.

Recently Paul Frontier put out a call for selfies, which got me thinking about selfies in general. I love seeing people’s selfies, and as an artist (the original self-portrait-makers!) I would love to see even more selfies.
I asked my sweet terrier Rosalicious if she’d consider making a selfie and promised for her efforts that we’d post hers on Good Morning Gloucester. She jumped at the opportunity for the extra attention and gave it a whirl with my cell phone (she’s not that good at it but I don’t have the heart to tell her so, and besides, a promise is a promise).
