Thoreau speech at Library

From the Beacon

On the 20th of December in 1848 several hundred citizens of Gloucester packed into the Town Hall to hear what was billed as an “original and highly entertaining lecture.” The lecturer was Henry David Thoreau, the gentleman from Concord. These men and women of Gloucester, who paid the not insignificant sum of one-dollar admission for a yearlong series of lectures, were perhaps somewhat starved for cultural offerings and evening entertainment. After all, they were without television, radio, movies, sports bars and none of their children were in the Little League!

On Thursday, March 31 at 7 p.m., that evening in Gloucester history and the Thoreau lecture will be recreated by Jay DiPrima, who brings history to life through his dramatization of people and events. The program is being sponsored by the Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library, the current day version of the original sponsor. The Lyceum, which is the program arm of the Library, carries on the mission of cultural enrichment, education and entertainment.

“Cycle del Sol” – at Sawyer Free

“Cycle del Sol” is one of my images on exhibit at the Sawyer Free Library. The photo was taken several years ago in Magnolia. There was a tiny shop next to the pizza place and every time I passed it, the bicycle resting against the wall shouted out to be photographed. I complied and this was the result.

Go see my photos at the library!

From now until the end of December, my photography is on exhibit in the Adolph I. Matz Art Gallery at the entrance of the Sawyer Free Library. The exhibit includes local scenes capturing the weather, light, and beauty of Cape Ann. Please stop by. Thank you!    —-Sharon

E.J. Lefavour History Behind The Painting At The Sawyer Free Art Auction

Good Morning Joey,

Great – this will be fun.  Attached is a little info about me, and a painting I did of a turnabout (this painting was donated to the Sawyer Free Library for their annual art auction), info below about it and its history.  EJ-

Did you know

That the National 10 class was originally known as the Turnabout class, built in 1953 by Harold R.Turner as a small wooden single or double handed dinghy class at the Parker River Marine. The boats were initially built as a junior training boat, although adults enjoy the boats as well. The class has grown mainly in the New England and Northeastern regions of the U.S. Fleets are located in Northern Lake George, New York, Boston, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maine and New Jersey. This turnabout, located in Annisquam on Lobster Cove, is said to be the first turnabout ever built.

Things To Do- Fish ‘n’ Fiction Event Feb 23

Fish ‘n’ Fiction
A new series hosted by the Phyllis A. Marine Association
Sawyer Free Library, Friend Room
Tuesday, February 23, 2010
6:00-8:00pm
Suggested Donation of $5.00 per person

Captain Richard Arnold will lead an informal conversation on his personal experiences fishing on board the Phyllis A., out of Gloucester harbor from 1984-2000. Please come and join us with your own stories.
This program benefits the Phyllis A. Marine Association who mission is, “to promote the history of gillnetting in Gloucester, Massachusetts through the display and preservation of the fishing vessel Phyllis A.” All conversations will be recorded for our oral history collection.
Additional conversations will occur on the fourth Tuesday of each month.
We offloaded the Phyllis A back when we handled fish at our dock.  The Arnold Brothers were about as classy as you get not only on the waterfront but in humanity in general.  These men are role models believe me and to have the opportunity to hear the stories as told by Richard, well let’s just say it’s something that no one who loves the fishing industry should miss.
