Solutions for Protecting Birds from Hitting Windows
Every year, in the United States alone, over 1,000,000,000—yes, that is one billon—birds are killed from flying into windows. Chris Leahy quoted this statistic at the talk he gave last week at the Sawyer Free Library. Coincidentally, earlier that day I had been speaking with my friend Kate who has this very problem of birds hitting her windows as her home is sited on a beautiful seaside meadow in Tiverton, Rhode Island. She wanted to share with my readers about spider web decals for glass windows.
I found a website that offers a range of innovative solutions to protect birds, for both the residential home and the commercial property, TONI Bird Control Solutions. Although based in Germany, the solutions are universal.
Spider webs reflect light in the UV spectrum and are a visible barrier to birds. When you think about it, we don’t often see birds entangled in a spider’s web. Taking cues from nature, the spider’s web is the basis for TONI’s ultraviolet bird pen, bird glass, and UV decals. TONI’s solution #2, the ultraviolet Bird Pen, is well suited for residential properties. Also, check with the Essex Bird Shop. I believe they carry ultraviolet decals, not visible to the human eye.
If so many birds are killed, why don’t we see the dead bodies? The answer is simply, scavengers. Migrant songbirds fly at night, hitting the glass in the dark and the very early morning hours. Scavengers like gulls, vultures, crows, magpies, rats, and cats know where to look for injured and dead birds. At city skyscrapers, building maintenance daily sweep up bags of, and sometimes during peak migration, barrels full of, dead birds every morning at dawn. The high death rate around skyscrapers is also due in part to the bright lights left burning all night.
Another solution is perhaps not wash your windows quite as frequently, or wait to wash until after the spring and fall migrations. Fortunately, we do not have the problem of birds hitting our windows because of our many weathered and wavy window panes dating back to 1851. We have a different problem. During warmer months, I like to take advantage of the harbor breezes and usually have the windows wide open, and without screens (until mosquito season begins). We’ve had finches and sparrows and hummingbirds flying around my home office, but then again, none fatally injured.
State of Massachusetts Birds
Chris Leahy spoke to a packed house at the Sawyer Free Library last night.
As is usually the case with Chris, his talk was brilliant and depth of knowledge inspiring. Aren’t we fortunate that he resides in Gloucester and always gives so generoulsy of his time and knowledge. Thanks, too, to the Sawyer Free for hosting this event. Chris gave out to our community twenty-five copies of the beautiful and densely illustrated 60 page seminal report on the avifauna of Massachusetts. If you did not receive a copy last night, it is available to read in convenient online magazine form here: State of the Birds: Documenting Changes in Massachusetts Birdlife.
From the forward of State of the Birds, written by Edward O. Wilson, University Professor Emeritus in Entomology Harvard University. ”
Dear Friends,
It is with tremendous enthusiasm that I mark the release of Mass Audubon’s seminal report on Massachusetts avifauna, State of the Birds 2011. Though our Commonwealth is one of the smallest, most populous states in the union, it is blessed with spectacular landscapes filled with an astonishing biodiversity. The Berkshire Hills in their autumn splendor, Bald Eagles soaring over the Quabbin wilderness, the majesty of the sea at any season from Cape Ann to Cape Cod—these and many other treasures inspire our imagination and lift our spirits. These landscapes are home to birds—birds that can show us, when we watch and listen, how our environment is faring and how it is changing.
…Birds inhabit our myths, appear in our poetry, and inspire our music. Since ancient times, birds have been used in auguries to make critical decisions or predict the future. Now science rather than superstition is interpreting what the birds are telling us. We need to listen carefully.”
Sincerely,
Edward O. Wilson

Sawyer Free Library in Gloucester, MA presents Chilean Photographer Rodrigo Gutiérrez in person on July 7th
Sawyer Free Library in Gloucester, MA presents Chilean Photographer Rodrigo Gutiérrez in person on July 7th at 7:00 PM.T
The Sawyer Free Library is proud to announce that photographer Rodrigo Gutiérrez of Chile will be presenting a talk about his acclaimed print collection entitled “Beauty Will Save the World: Picture a Story”. This premier event will take place at the Sawyer Free Library on Thursday, July 7 at 7:00 PM. The show opens on Tuesday, July 5, and continues through July 30, in the Matz Gallery at the library.
Mr. Gutiérrez will talk about how he discovered his passion for seeing the world through the lens; especially children from his travels around the world including the Himalayas, the United States , Europe and Gloucester . His expressive black and white portrayals portray children and the inner beauty that spills out of them even when their lives are spent “on the street”
This unique program will inspire not only artists but also those who appreciate a man who is a photographer by avocation but who captures the soul of humanity in his photographs. Mr. Gutiérrez leads a blended double life. Professionally he is a senior vice president in Latin America for Merrill Lynch, the global wealth-management company. He was educated as a lawyer in Chile and later earned a master’s degree from Tufts University ’s Fletcher School .
Mr. Gutiérrez took up photography when he decided words were not enough to express to family and friends what he saw in his travels. Inspired by the likes of Henri Cartier Bresson and Minor White, he studied with other leading photographers to develop mastery of composition and darkroom technique.
Please come and welcome Mr. Gutiérrez to the Library and to the community. For further information, please visit the libaray’s website at www.sawyerfreelibrary.org.

“Public Access and Democracy: From the Boob Tube to YouTube, A Revolution in Our Time” – CATV Annual Meeting
Coming Up: Tuesday, May 24 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Sawyer Free Library Friend Room
Come to the Cape Ann Annual Meeting and hear: “Public Access and Democracy: From the Boob Tube to YouTube, A revolution in Our Time”
Learn about the evolution of public access television, where ordinary people can create television programs and release them on CATV and the internet!
Let’s figure out how to merge Blogging and Broadcast!
There was a time before there was bloggers, before there was social media, before there was internet when the only public media “portal” to our community was Public Access Television: Channels 12, 27, and 67 on your Comcast cable dial.
There is a long history of individuals who fought long and hard for the right of each community to have these channels for PEG programming, which stands for Public (general interest), Education (school and public education programs) and Government (transparency in government meetings). Today, Public Access facilities around the world produce more programming annually than CBS, NBC, and FOC television combined.
YOU have the right to make television shows and cablecast them on CATV, as well as out through the internet. One of the most exciting developments on Cape Ann in the past few years is the incredible success of Good Morning Gloucester and the existence of all you wonderfully talented authors. In a keynote presentation that will be given by Barry O’Brien, there is a great acknowledgement of the work of Joey C., and the team of bloggers that make GMG so much fun. As television and the internet merge, we want to determine how our rights to Public Access television can be preserved and developed by applying our communities’ talent.
There will be tasty refreshments! Come on over Tuesday, May 24 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Sawyer Free Library Friend Room and join the conversation.

Help Request
I received a request from Don Dunsky yesterday. The library is working on a project and would like to find out the location of this house from sometime in 1930’s or 1940’s. Any information? Thanks! (Under the photo in pencil, it says “Beach Rd.? across from golf course” Must have been someone’s guess.)

Good Morning Gloucester- The Poem
Last night an interesting swath of diverse Gloucester folk were invited to recite their favorite poem at the Sawyer Free Library. I happened to be one of those people invited to read. Instead of reading someone else’s poem I decided it would be a good idea to work on my own after our good FOB Deb Clarke suggested the idea. With a little help from Snoop Maddie Mad and The Bean we put together a little something.
I’m not sure why I get so goddamn emotional when I speak about G-Town. Not sure if you can tell from the video but I was pretty much a wreck. It probably had something to do with not wanting to do a disservice to the city I love or the blog for which I’m obviously insanely passionate about but I sort of get overwhelmed at times when I speak about them.
Anyway I’d like to thank the Sawyer Free Library Lyceum and host Rufus Collinson for inviting me. I’d like to thank my great poetry contributors Snoop Maddie Mad and The Bean, and I’d like to thank everyone who came out for the event including our very own E.J.

Look for many of the other invited readers’ videos as the week goes on, I know the camera ran out of memory about half way through so I didn’t get to capture everyone unfortunately.
