Into the Wind

Last month Thatcher and the Sandy Bay Yacht Club Race Team spent three days, in somewhat snotty conditions, sailing at Marblehead Race Week.  About 25 different clubs and sailing programs were represented in the three day event at Pleon Yacht Club.  Upon dropping Thatch off each morning I sat, completely impressed, and watched the scene unfold around me.  I couldn’t believe how independent, confident, and dedicated all of the young sailors were.  Rigging boats is no joke and takes it hard work and preparation…and often times, commitment to jump in and help others.  There is no simply show up and race.

Here is a little time lapse video of just some of the action as about 175 boats set sail….

The talk will conclude with a brief overview of land conservation in the U.S, which has been described as one of America’s greatest ideas.
Ed Becker is president of Essex County Greenbelt, a regional land trust, where he’s been involved in several hundred projects saving over 17,000 acres of land.
Ed has been at the heart of Greenbelt’s growth and land conservation success for over thirty years.  During this time, he has led the transformation of Greenbelt from a small three-person operation to its current position as one of the most effective and highly-respected land conservation trusts in the country.  Ed’s exceptional abilities, integrity and passion for conserving land and nature define him.West Gloucester Sand Dunes

Sandy Bay Yacht Club

In many ways this was the summer that wasn’t for us. We officially moved last week and the cleaning, organizing, packing, purging, and planning that had to happen prior to the actual lugging and moving was more than taxing.

As our summer winds down, I was feeling bad that we didn’t do nearly as much with Thatcher and Finn as we typically do…..but then I stumbled upon these photos….and I couldn’t help but smile.  How bad could their summer have been when, after all, they had the opportunity to sail with good friends all summer long.

We’re super appreciative to all at Sandy Bay Yacht Club for helping the boys learn to sail….but more importantly, for the feelings of independence, camaraderie, and responsibility that come along with their lessons.  I have absolutely no doubt that when my boys look back on their childhood summers, Sandy Bay Yacht Club will be a big presence in their happy memories.

From Suzanne Gosselin-women and their boats in the news

Hi, Joey

Kudos to the youngest woman captain on the Harvey Gamage. And here’s a human interest story about another influential woman and her love affair with boats and sailing.   Emily Wick is quite an accomplished woman who has set a very high standard for those of us who have the privilege of knowing her.  Recently, Sandy Bay Yacht Club honored Emily by renaming the Race Committee boat in her honor.

Emily’s response to all the attention?  "I just wanted to have fun!"

Hope your readers enjoy this…..
