HOODED MERGANSER
Male Mallard left, male Hooded Merganser right
This charming little diving duck was spotted several days ago in Rockport Harbor with a group of Mallards. About two thirdsĀ the size of the male Mallards, theĀ striking pattern of the male Hooded MerganserĀ made it easily spotted in the flock. A fun fact aboutĀ Hooded Mergansers is that they can find their prey underwater by changing the refractive properties of their eyes. Additionally, they have an extra pair of eyelids that areĀ both transparent and protective, functioning like a pair of goggles.

Please join me Thursday night at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center where I will be presenting a brand new illustrated talk “Beautiful Birds of Cape Ann.” The programĀ covers theĀ gorgeous migrating and resident birds that we seeĀ in our neighborhoods, as seenĀ through the seasons, and includes such beauties as the Snowy Owl, Brant Geese,Ā Snow Goose, Redheads, a rarely-seen-in-our region White Pelican, egrets, herons, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, songbirds, and some life history of Cape Ann’s resident swan family.Ā The program begins at 7pmĀ and isĀ part of the RNCC and Mass Audubon ongoing exhibit “For the Birds.” I hope to see you there!

ROCKY NECK ART COLONY PRESENTS NEW EXHIBIT ~ FOR THE BIRDS
The Rocky Neck Art Colony kicks off the 2016 exhibition season with an extraordinary six-week exhibition and fundraising event at the RNAC’s Cultural Center at Rocky Neck. Juried by Amy Montague, the Director of the Museum of American Bird Art at Mass Audubon, in Canton MA, the exhibition “For The Birds” features multi-media avian art. The public is invited to a reception on Sunday, January 31 at 2-4 PM. Save the dates for a talk on the life and art of John J. Audubon by noted local author Chris Leahy, Bertrand Chair of Field Ornithology at Mass Audubon, at the Cultural Center on Thursday, February 11 at 7:00 PM, a talk about the BirdsĀ of Cape Ann by local photographer and filmmaker Kim Smith, and “The Artful Birdhouse,” an auction of original, artist-created birdhouses on Sunday February 21, beginning at 1:00 PM. A raffle of a basket full of birding-related items concludes the events with a drawing of the winning ticket on Sunday, March 6 at 2:00 PM. A portion of all events proceeds will support Mass Audubon’s mission to protect the flora and fauna of Massachusetts.
Concurrent with RNAC’s “For The Birds” exhibition, The Trident Gallery, Director Matthew Swift, presents “Nest” its third annual exhibition in partnership with Mass Audubon’s Museum of American Bird Art offering artworks from the Museum’s collection. Exhibition dates: January 30 ā March 6, 2016.
The songs, vivid colors and enormous variety of bird species attracted to Cape Ann’s coastal waters, marshes, and waterways often bring with them both birding enthusiasts and artists, each drawn by their vibrant visual appeal. Come to The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck to view the aesthetic heights their wildly patterned beauty has inspired in the work of New England artists’ multi-media offerings in painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, assemblage, and more.
This spectacular melding of the avian and the artistic is juried by Amy Montague, Director of the Museum of Bird Art at Mass Audubon, the only museum dedicated to art inspired by the beauty, science and wonder of birds. In her 23 years at Mass Audubon, Ms. Montague has stewarded and grown the organization’s broad and eclectic art collection that embraces fine art, folk art, sporting art, illustration, and more. She has curated more than thirty exhibitions exploring the intersection of art and nature focusing on artists as varied as John James Audubon and Andy Warhol. She has twice been a juror for the internationally renowned “Birds in Art” exhibition at the Woodson Art Museum in Wisconsin.
The Artful Birdhouse Auction: Sunday, February 21. Preview 1-2PM, Live Auction at 2:15 PM. The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson Street, Gloucester MA. Engaging the charm and appeal of birdhouses as a foundation, the imagination of friends and members of the Rocky Neck Art Colony will soar in creating whimsical, modern, traditional, fantasy and completely unexpected “artful” birdhouses. The following artists have donated their time and talents for an auction of their birdhouse creations in support of Mass Audubon and in conjunction with the “For The Birds” art exhibit at The Cultural Center. Promoting the Auction, early bird creators will have the opportunity to display their works at several venues in and around Gloucester.

Gloucester MA, Mar 23, 2015ā On April 2, 2015, the Cultural Center Gallery on Wonson Street in Gloucester opens the second of two RNAC member showsāa juried Spring exhibition of paintings and drawings by Rocky Neck Art Colony members. Provocatively titled āItās Not Furniture,ā the exhibition features 35 works by 23 member artists exhibiting 2D works in oil, acrylic, watercolor mixed media, encaustic, collage and color pencil. Juror Carol Pelletier, Chair of Fine Arts and Professor of Art at Endicott College, selected the work.
āItās Not Furnitureā is on view April 2-26, 2015 during gallery hours Thursday-Sunday from 12-4 PM. The public is invited to a reception for artists and friends on Sunday, April 12, 2-4 PM at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson Street, Gloucester.
According to the exhibition organizer Martha Swanson, the slightly odd title for this painting show is meant to provoke a discussion about the function of art from both artistās point of view and intention, to the non-utilitarian function of wall art. To express one of the myriad of reasons for collecting art, a member of the Cultural Centerās exhibition committee succinctly stated, āa painting need not match the dĆ©cor.ā
āItās Not Furnitureā looks at the landscape, seascape, cityscape, still-life study and more in styles ranging from realistic to abstract through the diverse styles of artists Kathleen Gerdon Archer, Kristie Bernard, Katherine Coakley, Mary D. You will learn to observe very carefully and to create volume and space with both line and value. Lively and nuanced mark making will be explored. The class will be flexible to allow for a variety of skill levels and experienced participants may choose to work in a self-directed manner. A supply list will be provided.

CRAZY MOON ~Ā Columnist and actor Gordon Baird is staging 8 performances of CRAZY MOON, an original, 10 song musical, starring Gordon but also featuring Kathleen Brown and musician John Hyde at the new Rocky Neck Cultural Center in GloucesterĀ (6 Wonson St.) the last 2 weeks of Sept.Ā Ā The plot is adventurous, mysterious and occasionally swashbuckling.Ā The play is exciting, unexpected, mysterious andĀ technically very innovative at the end.

About Boubacar Diabate & Samba Lolo
Boubacar Diabate is a Griot singer, guitarist, songwriter and storyteller from Mali. ‘Bouba’ creates his own style of contemporary music by combining traditional rhythms with modern influences including Reggae, Blues, Bluegrass, and Jazz. Bouba sings of a common shared experience of love, life and humanity, giving all an opportunity to hear the age-old West African tradition of Griot storytelling through song.
Now based in Boston, Bouba was born in Bamako, Mali-West Africa. He was raised playing Djembe and Guitar while learning from the Griot elders as they passed down their ancient heritage through their music and song.
About Griots
In Africa, Griots pass down the oral tradition of legends, stories, and proverbs through many generations, which is essential to preserve their culture. A Griot is a teacher, poet, musician, and participant in important ceremonies such as weddings, naming initiations and installations of chiefs.

DANCE PARTY! Come hear the hot, groovy sounds of 1960s Latin Bugalu from Boston-based Lookie Lookie,Ā Friday June 28, 7-10 at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, $10. Some of Boston’s best musicians and a groove guaranteed to make you smile!
A brand new band playing Latin Bugalu music, Lookie Lookie is named for a song by Ricardo Ray. The music of Ray and Joe Cuba form the core repertoire, with a healthy dose of African Latin music, including Soukous.Lookie Lookie is the brainchild of bassist Chris Maclachlan, best known for his work in the seminal Boston punk band Human Sexual Response.Maclachlan has an abiding love for Latin Bugalu, a crossover genre invented primarily by Newyorican musicians in the 1960s. Incredibly fun and catchy, Bugalu lies somewhere between the stately Cuban sounds of the 50s and the manic high salsa of the 70s. Top artists included Joe Cuba and Richie Ray, whose tunes form the backbone of the new band’s repertoire.
In fact, the band is named for an early Richie Ray hit, “Lookie Lookie,” which encapsulates some of the pan-American fusion that went into Bugalu.
Lookie Lookie is an all-star lineup: Scott Getchell, trumpet; Ken Field, alto sax; Russ Gershon, tenor sax; Chris Maclachlan, bass; Rick Barry and Vicente Lebron, percussion. Collectively this hoary crew is in some way responsibile for the Either/Orchestra, the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble, Bim Ska La Bim, Agachiko, Willie Alexander’s Persistence of Memory Orchestra and other top Boston bands.
Band godfather Vicente Lebron has played with many members of Ricardo’s Ray and Joe Cuba’s band over a long and storied career, beginning in New York in 1971. Since moving to Boston in 1974, he has been a mainstay of the Latin music community, as a player on the jazz scene with bands like the Either/Orchestra and Club D’Elf.
Lookie Lookie has the amazing ability to put a smile on the face of just about everybody, no matter what their musical taste. And, it’s easy and fun to dance to – you don’t have to know any fancy steps, the rhythm will take you away.
