Crosses at sunrise

Crosses on the bell towers of Our Lady of Good Voyage church, at dawn (photographed from the roof of the rectory of St. Ann’s church).

What / where is it?

Where (and/or what) is the subject of these photos (beyond, “bricks!”)? I think there’s an interesting shape/patterns/positive-negative space dynamic going on in them.  They look kind of “Photoshopped”, but I only slightly adjusted the brightness and contrast.

The Paint Manufactory (with a skull) a year ago

I found this interesting photo in my files from last year, while trying to clear up space on my hard drive…

Taekwondo on the streets

Now that I am back from my retreat, I need to catch up on processing photos from the previous weekend – including a selection of shots from Demetri’s Taekwondo Academy demonstration at the street bazaar.  The kid in the photo (above) impressed me by splitting a board with one blow… I’ll post more of these cool taekwondo moves throughout the week!

Playing with my iPhone macro lens

A while ago, I posted about a set of accessory lenses I bought for my iPhone.  On the morning of July 28th I got these photos of fallen raindrops with the macro lens:

Yesterday’s sunrise with a rainbow in the west

These photos were taken at around 5:35-5:45AM yesterday, from the room of the rectory at St. Ann’s Church (Holy Family Parish).  I should have shot a panorama that included both the sunrise and the rainbow, but it was too early for my brain to think that clearly…

Saturday Night Report: Art at Scout Vintage Finds & I Loved the Block Party

Before heading over to Gloucester’s Block Party on Saturday night, I stopped in at Scout Vintage Finds at 186 East Main Street, across from Beacon Marine for a Photography Reception. Karen “Scout” King, the shop’s proprietess, hosts a rotating art show every month during the summer.  For July the visiting artist is a young photographer named Alex Knudsen. The photographs he is showing at Scout manage to be Americana without the kitsch. I especially loved a wistful photograph of a mint green 1950s bedroom which felt like it has been vacant in every sense for a long time. Be sure to stop by and see his work and Karen’s store soon, as the show is up through the end of July. For more info go to www.facebook.com/scoutfinds

And another thing…the Block Party was a whole lot of fun. A HUGE thank you to the people who pull this together, as there was truly something for everyone and just a great atmosphere of fun. There was an amazing variety of great music and food, and lots of kids’ activities. The only problem we had was finding simple street food (I hate to admit it, but I was looking for something straightforward like hot dogs), as we weren’t about to attempt  a sit-down dinner, foisting our children on the rest of the dining public. The pizza slices were sold out, which is a great problem to have. Then we came across Markouk Bread, which has some delicious, fresh options. The hummus with onion, tomato and mint leaves? Wow. Check them out at the Cape Ann Farmers’ Market and online www.markoukbread.com. By the way, Markouk Bread will be coming to Rockport in the Fall for our annual HarvestFest. I’m already planning to take a hummus break at the festival (yes, I plan ahead).

Thanks Block Party organizers, for a great evening out!

Horribles Parade in retrospect

“Retrospect” is a euphemistic way to say that I’m a bit late in getting these photos ready to post. But you didn’t really want to get bombarded with all the photos of the parade from all the contributors at once, did you?

As a newcomer who moved here less than a year ago, the whole Fiesta and 4th of July week experience has been a lot of fun! The Horribles parade was bigger than I expected, and well worth watching.

So, here are a few of my shots of the parade. The full set can be seen as a slideshow or one by one on my photostream on Flickr.

See these bigger, and lots more, here:

Happy Independence Day!

Photos taken of the fireworks last night, from my perch on the roof of the rectory:

Special thanks and prayers for all the men and women who have served their country to help protect and defend our freedom!

Besides the fireworks, what a beautiful moon we had last night…
