With appeal letters reaching over 1,800 Gloucester households, the Library seeks community support to complete the 2025 Sawyer Free Library, a state-of-the-art facility where history meets innovation. By supporting this transformative project, we are investing in our communityโ€™s future and creating an inclusive space where everyone can learn, grow, and thrive,โ€ said Mern Sibley on behalf of the Libraryโ€™s Board. โ€œWe need everyoneโ€™s help to make this vision a reality as we approach the finish line. Every gift, no matter the size, brings us closer to opening the doors to our new 21st-century Library.โ€

Scheduled to open in Fall 2025, the new Sawyer Free Library will serve as a vital community resource, offering expanded spaces for children, teens, and adults, enhanced digital resources, and sustainable design. It will boast a range of modern amenities, including a larger childrenโ€™s area, a teen room with creative spaces, a digital learning lab, a local history research center, quiet study rooms, a 100-seat community room, and more. This new facility will allow the Library to serve a broader, more diverse audience and increase its offerings of public programs.

As the Library reaches this milestone, it invites the greater community and beyond to support the 2024 Annual Appeal, ensuring that the Sawyer Free 2025 Library can fully realize its potential as a beacon of learning and connection. • 3.ย Action, Inc.: $250,000 for the renovation of an existing supportive housing community at 3 Eastern Pointย Road.ย

Mayor Greg Verga said, “Supporting new housing and preservation efforts is crucial for maintaining the vibrancy and inclusivity of our community. These ARPA grants will help ensure that Gloucester continues to be a place where everyone has access to safe and affordable housing.”

Conditional award letters will be sent to the recipients in the coming weeks. Collectively, these projects will result in the creation or preservation of 120 housing units in Gloucester, 90 of which will be designated as affordable units.

The Gloucester Affordable Housing Trust Fund was created to support the creation, preservation, and maintenance of affordable housing in the City of Gloucester. Chairperson Larry Oaks said, โ€œWe set out to fund at least 100 units of affordable housing through the ARPA housing initiative. So, we’re truly delighted at this point to be in a position to fund and support up to six individual projects that collectively will produce or preserve more than 100 housing units across the city.  It all speaks to the tremendous need for affordable housing here in Gloucester.”

The Trust has decided to reserve their decision on the remaining three funding applications until October. This extension will allow Harborlight, Bill Wheat, and Action, Inc. additional time to provide information demonstrating that their projects are โ€œready to proceed,โ€ as required by ARPA funding guidelines.
