Boston Light with Lighthouse Keeper Sally Snowman at SFL on Thursday, October 10

 ~ Sawyer Free Library ~

Join us at the Sawyer Free Library on Thursday, October 10, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm for an engaging presentation on Boston Light, America’s first established light station, which has been guiding ships since 1716. Located on Little Brewster Island at the entrance to Boston Harbor, Boston Light remains an active Coast Guard-maintained aid to navigation. However, its distinction as the “last manned Coast Guard light station” in the country is coming to an end with the upcoming retirement of its 70th keeper, Sally Snowman.

The event will feature a PowerPoint presentation showcasing photos from Boston Light’s remarkable 307-year history, along with personal anecdotes from Sally’s tenure as a 21st-century keeper. Sally Snowman, Ph.D., an educator, author, and the official USCG historian for Boston Light, has co-authored two books with her husband, Jay Thomson: Boston Light: A Historical Perspective (1999) and Boston Light: Arcadia Images of America (2016). Sally is also the author of the children’s book Sammy the Boston Lighthouse Dog (2005).

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about Boston Light’s rich history and hear firsthand accounts from its last keeper before this chapter in maritime history closes.

The event will take place at the Sawyer Free Library at 21 Main Street, Downtown Gloucester. Registration required at sawyerfreelibrary.org.

USCG Lighthouses to be auctioned and donated include Massachusetts beacons

A record number of lighthouses are being offered to the public during 2023 “Lighthouse Season”

BOSTON. May 26, 2023 – Each May, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), offers lighthouses to the public and other entities as part of its mission to deliver value and savings in federal real estate for taxpayers. This year, GSA is offering a record number of lighthouses, including at least six to nonprofits and government entities and at least four to the public through auctions.

GSA press release. Read more here.

A few lighthouses will be auctioned straight off. For the others, a right of first refusal process enables transfer of the property–buildings and grounds–to “federal agencies, state and local governments, nonprofits, educational agencies, and community development organizations” that are in a position to maintain them, and may already be fulfilling that mission. Thacher Island Assoc. does a beautiful job for Twin Lights and Straitsmouth Islands.

The Lighthouses of Cape Ann

There are six lighthouses on Cape Ann, plus one more imaginative one at Stage Fort Park’s dynamite playground. Recently I hosted a large group visiting from Arizona. They wanted to walk a local history trail and ended up visiting two: the Freedom Trail in Boston and the HarborWalk in Gloucester. Their number one request? They wanted to see lighthouses. Last year, Kathie Gilson and Marie Santos designed this fun shaped brochure for the City of Gloucester. You can find it at the Chamber and the Stage Fort Park welcome center.

Cape Ann Harbor Tours offers special Lighthouse Cruise all along Cape Ann as well as harbor tours. (978) 283-1979 Email info@capeannharbortours.com.
