ST. JOHN’S GLOUCESTER 150TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OCT.6TH
150 years ago, as the Civil War raged, so many of Gloucester’s eligible soldiers went off to fight that a manpower shortage for our booming fishing industry seemed inevitable. The vacuum that resulted offered opportunity for the thousands of fisherman from the Canadian Maritimes who flocked to Gloucester. Since many of these men worshiped in the Anglican Church, Gloucester businessman Theron Dale and the other members of Gloucester’s Episcopal Society saw the need to create a free parish to meet the spiritual needs of these itinerant fisherman. This led to the building of St. John’s Episcopal Church on Middle Street where it can be found today.
St. John’s will have a special Evensong service to commemorate this event. The choir will offer a rich variety of music consisting of psalms, anthems, prayers and canticles. Evensong is sung daily in Cathedrals and colleges in many parts of the world.
The Canticles (Magnificat and Nunc dimittis) are to be sung with a setting by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The Anthems will include “From the rising of the sun” by Henry Wilson, organist of Christ Church, Hartford. This will represent music that may have been sung when the church was in its early years.
One of the highlights of the service will be the unveiling and blessing of the Dorcas Window in honor of all the women of St. John’s and their contribution to the Gloucester community. The parish choir will sing a new anthem by Alan Lewis, entitled “The Windows” with words by early 17th century priest and poet George Herbert, to mark the dedication of the new window by Adele Q. Ervin.
After the service there will be a reception commemorating the founding of the church by Theron Dale and others in 1863. Still dedicated to its mission to lend a helping hand to the people of Cape Ann, St. John’s will celebrate its storied past and the blessings of the present at this wonderful event. We welcome you to come and join us.

Chris Wagner’s Gloucester Bar List- is He Missing Any Place?
Hey GMG!
New to the area in the last year and I just discovered your site. Good stuff! I’m lovin’ gettin to know Cape Ann and your site is going to be a big help.
My pals and I are beginning an odyssey of sorts to have a drink at every bar on Cape Ann, starting with the bars, taverns and pubs of Gloucester. After Gloucester, we’ll do ever bar in Essex, Manchester, Ipswich, Hamilton/Wenham and Beverly. Maybe after that we’ll start over in Gloucester!

Can We Get The Gigantic Rubber Duck to Gloucester Harbor?
You never know until you try. Rubber Duck and Homie want to see the giant Rubber Duck in Gloucester Harbor so they have set up a Facebook Page to collect “likes”. If we get a few thousand “likes” then maybe we try to convince the caretakers of the Rubber Duck that the next east coast visit should be in Gloucester. If you watch the Pirates and the Reds play the National League Wild Card game tomorrow night you might catch a glimpse of Giant Rubber Duck outside PNC Park in Pittsburgh. She will be there for the next several weeks.
Imagine this photo below is the A. Piatt Andrew Bridge. Now go and “like” the page. Tell your friends. We need thousands of likes before we can ask the Rubber Duck to make the trip.

Block Rockin’ Tonight

Moonbeams Over Niles Pond
Yesterday afternoon I was photographing a friend’s garden, looking west towards the very last shimmer of sunlight as it melted into the horizon. I packed up my gear and while heading home, passed the rising Harvest Moon brightly illuminating Niles Pond. Knowing my family was home hungrily waiting for dinner, I hopped out of the car and snapped away for only a brief moment, wishing I could stay but happy to to get a few photos. At this time of year, every which way you turn brings the reward of unfolding beauty.
Good evening, Joey!–Linda Rae Castagna Writes In
We have just enjoyed 8 great days in Rockport/Gloucester and loved every moment. We just completed our last evening by dining for the first time at DUCKWORTH’S BISTROT on East Main Street, and thoroughly enjoyed every moment, especially trying 1/2 dinner’s x 4. Your lobster, from CAPTAIN JOE and SONS, was featured in the risotto, tender and juicy. The staff couldn’t have been kinder or more eager to help us. And because we were 1st timers in the restaurant, we ended up with a seat right in front of the window. Going to tell her we’re new next time too!
On the way to our car we found Beth underneath piles of recycled sails in AGAIN and AGAIN, happily sewing the latest tote bag. That’s a fun store!
As always it is worth it to make the long drive from Milford, New Jersey to Gloucester. We simply never tire of your homeport. Linda and Rob Castagna
